Soluce is a new collaboration between Konstantinos Soublis and Savvas Ysatis, two producers with strong reputations that begin in with a background in techno but often veer far out into ambient and other territory. Soublis has had an impressive and steady streak with his primary project Fluxion, beginning as part of the Chain Reaction stable in the late 90s and continuing to impress with his dubbier, more melodic releases in the 21st cenutry. Ysatis got his start with upbeat techno on Tresor but has more recently found himself collaborating with Taylor Deupree on 12k, a sharp contrast to his punchier, previous output. Birth feels like a marrying of their varied sensibilities, a deep techno pulse underpinning most of its tracks while textured, oblique atmospheres swirl overhead.
Soluce - Birth by Soluce
The tracks given the most room to roam tend to be the strongest for me, such as the 9-minute title cut that features primarily hushed drones and overtones, no beats to be found. By contrast, “Polymorphia” and “Regions” buoy like vintage Porter Ricks, a techno undertow belying its textured effects and atmosphere. They harken to that project’s distinctly aquatic sound of yore, also suggesting a nod to Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project in their use of underwater bass kicks. Only on “Native” does the rhythm section truly take center stage, its simple, clean drum patterns and dubby chords echoing each of the duo’s beginnings in late 90s techno, sort of the punchier remix of the title cut, as it features comparable drones and whispers of sound design. Birth is darker and more atmospheric than most of Fluxion’s more recent output, and it has more tooth than Ysatis’s 12k collaborations. It acknowledges and even can nestle in next to the atmospheric and minimal techno that Basic Channel and Chain Reaction introduced to many of us 20 years ago without feeling like a carbon copy or mere retread. Instead it shows off each contributor’s strengths and sends the message that they prefer to expand their horizons to the outer limits rather than feeling constrained by convention.
