LE CENTO CITTA’ - Domenica 30 Settembre 1900 : Solunto e Selinunte

L’allegato al Secolo d’Italia del 30 Settembre dell’anno 1900, ci porta alle rovine di Solunto , l’antica città fondata probabilmente dai Sicani ma che i Fenici avevano colonizzato tanto che era considerata con Mozia e Palermo come una delle tre città fenice della Sicilia. Nella sua descrizione l’autore ci racconta della via Sacra che alle rovine portava, circondata da rigogliosi cespugli di gerani e boschi di ulivi ed agrumeti; quindi ci parla ammirato delle rovine esposte costantemente al sole per poi riportare tutta la storia della cittadina secondo le cronache Romane.

Selinunte invece scuote il cronista che ammette, pur essendo un turista professionista, di essere rimasto impressionato dalla grandiosità del luogo e delle rovine distribuite su due collinette opposte su cui probabilmente la città era stata costruita in epoche diverse. Nel parlare delle rovine dei sette templi il cronista ne descrive la grandezza mai vista neanche nei grandi templi della Grecia. Il tempio G infatti e lungo più di cento metri e largo più di cinquanta segno di una potenza e di una ricchezza che la città aveva conquistato grazie alla sua alleanza con Siracusa.

The annex to the Italian Century of September 30th, 1900, takes us to the ruins of Solunto, the ancient city founded probably by the Sicans but that the Phoenicians had colonized so much that it was considered with Mozia and Palermo as one of the three cities phoenix of Sicily. In his description, the author tells us about the Sacred Way that led to the ruins, surrounded by lush bushes of geraniums and woods of olive and citrus groves; then he speaks to us admiring the ruins exposed constantly in the sun and then bring back the whole history of the town according to Roman chronicles.

Selinunte instead shakes the reporter who admits, despite being a professional tourist, to be impressed by the grandeur of the place and the ruins distributed on two opposite hills on which probably the city had been built in different eras. In talking about the ruins of the seven temples, the chronicler describes the greatness he has never seen even in the great temples of Greece. The temple G in fact is more than a hundred meters long and more than fifty meters wide of a power and wealth that the city had conquered thanks to its alliance with Syracuse.
