Birthday gift for the awesome @isei-silva! <3 Some salt between Raurek and Berrist!
hello there! I was scrolling the #WoW tag on Tumblr and I discovered your amazing blog: I really like your art - and, if it's possible, I'd like to know more about your Raurek and Berrist! only if you're comfortable with it, of course.
First of all, thank you that’s so kind, I’m really glad you enjoy my stuff! I’m pretty shy when it comes to sharing personal ideas since my forte is drawing but I can give you the ‘short’ and skinny of it.
For disclaimer purposes Berrist belongs to Isei-Silva while Raurek belongs to me. I’m not going to go into the history of Isei’s character since she has a lot of cool stuff written up on her blog that I think you should go see personally over here in her post about Berrist.
Keeping in mind that Berrist is a watcher (Warden wannabe) our story started with Raurek being one of the demon hunters that was overlooked by wardens. Chronologically this took place during the start of legion when the Gul’dan was laying siege to the vault and they needed the Illidari to help combat them. While most of the Demon hunters were freed from their stasis and as it came to waking up Raurek - the demon trapped within his body actually woke up before he did. He wasn’t in his right mind, so he was awoken, deemed a threat and left within the vaults.
Berrist on the other hand was sent to do reconnaissance, to sweep the vaults and make sure there were no wounded. He ended up delving a bit too deep into the vaults, found Raurek and the couple shared a dialogue where at this point Raurek was in his right mind trying to convince Berrist to let him out. Berrist initially wants to just leave him there, he doesn’t trust him but basically gets ambushed by felhounds and imps during this exchange. Being inexperienced with exterminating demons he has to chose whether to die by the hands of the demons or take his chances with the rogue Illidari.
Berrist made a last minute decision and freed him. Raurek aided him in dispatching the demons that nearly killed him however the warden found out pretty quickly that the demon hunter was still just as much of a threat. If it weren’t for the fact that Berrist had the know-how to navigate the vaults considering how labyrinthine they were - also rigged and trapped for trespassers. Raurek would have just executed him on the spot without a second thought. His other justification for keeping Berrist around was potentially using him as a hostage to ensure he got away free once they reached the surface - Berrist was unaware of this.
We are both pretty busy, so we chip away at the plot here and there, but the initial glue to all of this is that Raurek gets free, Berrist made a mistake letting him out and has to hunt him down (clean up his own mess). And eventually, playing on the ideas with how demons make pacts and usually oath-fully serve. Raurek and Berrist end up working with each other on the broken shore despite Raurek’s reluctance to do so, helping the resistance push the invading forces back.
There’s lots of petty squabbling between them, So much salt!
