“Ay, another round of drinks here for my friends!”
It was a night of celebrations. The boys, having just put out an EP to tide over the fans until their new album, were cheering its success. Along with that success, you were there with the boys to cheer the start of something equally as new and wonderful - the start of your relationship with George.
It had been happening for a few weeks, but you never chose to put a name on it. Neither of you did. You both were simply happy to be, happy to have someone to lean into when you felt tired, or when life was getting to be life in that tasking, overbearing way it always seemed to become. Labels were not an issue. That was, until fans found out. You came out saying you were a couple merely as a means to cool the storm down, to let everyone know that yes, they were not going crazy, their beloved George was hanging out with a girl and does have feelings for her. It was as if a weight had been lifted from your shoulder, no longer being bombarded with their questions. You were happy. So was George.
Which brought you to the pub, surrounded by the boys and held close to your very tall, approaching being very drunk, boyfriend. You had all been there for about an hour, and already were nearing your fourth round of shots. George on the side had a glass of something mixed with whiskey, while you were enjoying a fruity vodka drink. The boys were chatting about a football game they had watched earlier, throwing facts and favorite parts back and forth. You were content sitting at George’s side, letting his warmth and the warmth from your drink settle you down. It felt nice, being like that. You quite enjoyed it.
“Hey {Y/N}, how does it feel to be able to openly be with George now?”
Turning your attention to Adam, the smaller lad holding his own drink and smiling warmly back at you, you gave him a happy shrug. “Pretty great, really. Makes me wonder why we didn’t just make it official sooner.”
“I’m glad you didn’t.”
All eyes flew to the small boy with the wicked amount of curls and glass of tequila in his hand. He sipped from the drink casually before looking around, as if he was unsure of why all of the eyes were suddenly on his figure. He looked himself over and then took another gaze around.
“What?”
“What did you mean by that,” Adam asked, voice a bit softer than the shouting he had used to sound above the crowd, “you’re glad they didn’t come out as a couple?”
Matty did not flinch. “Yeah. Would’ve been a right mess.”
“Why’s that?”
Matty’s, and your, eyes turned to George, finally speaking up and assuming a rather brooding position next to you. Had he not been your boyfriend you knew could hardly fish without feeling bad for the fish being caught, you probably would have been afraid of him. Matty, even after knowing him for so long, looked partially so.
“Would’ve stolen the attention away from the EP, ‘s all.”
“Who the fuck cares, Matty?”
“Well we can’t just have some bird being all people remember of us the week of our release!”
His words struck like daggers in you. You knew they shouldn’t have, because you knew Matty cared about you, you knew he was happy to have you around and making his best friend happy. He was just drunk Matty, talking out of his ass like always. The words ‘some bird’ however echoed through your head relentlessly. Some bird, some bird, some bird. You weren’t just some bird. You were {Y/N}, a strong, funny, competent woman who just so happened to catch the eye of a famous band’s drummer. Maybe it bothered you so much because you were drunk. You had no idea. All you knew was that the words made your stomach sink, and you had to excuse yourself from the conversation as fast as you could. You heard George call after you and Ross and Adam chide Matty sternly, but your feet kept you going. You went all the way out of the pub, stopping only once the cool night air hit your skin and the noise inside went muffled. You had a few moments in peace alone, until George came barreling through the door.
“Hey!”
You waited to look up and meet his eyes, knowing your tears were waiting to roll down your cheeks. You couldn’t look to him until they were secure. You wouldn’t. You didn’t. When you finally met his, he looked heartbroken. That alone was nearly enough to release the floodgates.
“Please, don’t listen to a thing Matty said, he’s just off his arse and being a prick-”
“I know,” you replied, quiet, mumbled. “I just didn’t know.”
“Didn’t know what?”
“That I’d be such an issue.”
George’s brow furrowed. This was the first time you saw him look upset. It wasn’t a look you particularly enjoyed. “You are far from an issue. Matty’s just-”
“Right.” George shook his head, but you continued on. “He’s right, when it comes down to it. It was good that we kept private until then. No one’s going to be mad about us overshadowing anything. Everyone got the proper amount of time to be excited for both things.”
“The way he said it though was uncalled for,” he pressed, “and unfair to you on so many levels. It’s nowhere near how we, how I, think about you.”
“I know, but-”
“{Y/N}.” His fingers dipped under your cheek, nudging your face up so your eyes met his. The look in them took your breath away. “You aren’t just ‘some bird’ I found somewhere random. You are a beautiful, intelligent, fantastic girl that I have the pleasure of getting to know and fall for. You are a great friend to everyone you meet with a lovely heart. And even if we had come out about this the week of the EP dropping, so what? I still would be just as crazy for you as I am now. We all would. Even Matty, the grump. Remind me to toss him off the nearest roof when I get the chance.”
You giggled. “Nah, don’t be so hard on him. Pushing him off some stairs, now that might be perfect.”
A beautiful smile washed across George. “You gonna’ be alright?”
Nodding, you got up on your toes to press a kiss to his cheek. “Yes. I’m a big girl, I can get over it. Matty Healy hasn’t deterred me yet.”
“That’s my girl.”
Kissing the top of your head, George took your hand into his and brought you back inside the bar. When you returned, you found the three other boys sitting at a nicer table, with Matty scrunched up against the corner looking like his dog had just died. George cleared his throat, alerting them all that you were back. Matty perked up and nearly hopped off the table to go to you.
“{Y/N}, I’m so sorry, I was such a prick and-”
“It’s alright Healy,” you said, flashing him a small smile, “I’m okay. I’m not going to let ‘some drunk’ ruin my night.”
Matty blushed a bit, then looked to George. “I’m sorry, mate.”
“‘S alright,” George replied, reaching to pat his shoulder. “I just think you owe my girl here a drink for all the trouble you’ve caused her tonight.”
“I’ll buy you anything,” Matty told you, his speech slightly slurred. “Anything. I’ll get you a fucking platter full of drinks. You name it.”
You turned and nudged George. “Next time, say he owes me a new car or apartment, will ya?”
Cackling, George leaned down and kissed your lips. “Anything for you, love.”
Alright one last thing from Procreate before I’m inactive for real. I kind of figured out how to use a second layer for shading in it and I love the brushes Oh and this bird is just some random bird I came up with in 20 seconds. Maybe I’ll do more art of them later
We were at the zoo a couple of days ago and there were these birds that were super cool. I don't remember what they were called but what was cool about them was the fact that their call is MMEEEEEEEEEHHHHH!!!!!!!!! The only thing I could think of was the 1940's gangsters going NEH SEE?
