yknow people don't talk about the fact that Monsieur Scarlet is, uh, really bad? Like, a trans character pretends to be one gender to lure victims in? Apparently also has a husband which makes it feel Even Worse? idk, maybe I read too much into it but something about it just feels really gross

We don't actually know that monsieur scarlet is trans? Nor is he luring them in by "pretending" to be another gender, all we know is that he is pretending to need help, but then drains the life force of explorers.

I do know that some people are uncomfortable with Monsieur Scarlet being the only effeminate gay man, who just so happens to be criminal and like, serial killer? serial life stealer?? does he kill his victims i dont remember. Which is a valid criticism.

However, scarlet is a backer character and so his design and backstory are not necessarily in the control of moonsprout games. I also don't know if making scarlet a villian was a choice the devs made or a choice the creator made.

Regardless, i'm going to assume scarlet's design and backstory weren't made out of bad faith bc i didn't really get that vibe myself. honestly i think his design and character is fucking awesome.

However, the lack of queer representation in bug fables does make me sad, and scarlet wouldn't stand out or be "problematic" if there were other queer characters. And that is something i would really like to see rectified in future games.

like, with exception of scarlet i dont think there is any other queer representation?

and rebelle and voi dont count APPARENTLY voi is a boy for whatever fucking reason. i assumed they were lesbians bc i figured just that most of the wasps were female just like irl, the same way it is with the ant and bee kingdom

tldr; i personally didn't pick up a "trans/gay ppl bad and evil" from scarlet, but also i do think moonsprout games could really step up on queer representation.

Some Nano Writing

Notes:

So, uuuuuhhh, I’m doing Nanowrimo this year (hence why I haven’t been posting much this month), so I thought I’d share some!

The setting is steampunk mixed with the 1920s and magic.

The MC, Moira, just escaped and was found by a stranger on his balcony.

I’ll add an offifcial intro post later, so have fun!

 When Moira woke, she burrowed further into the soft pillows on which she lay. The comforter and sheets were the softest she’d ever felt and were a welcome change from the sterile cell she’d been relegated to for who knows how long. The softness and quiet helped her to not aggravate her bruised body, but her head pounded something fierce, and her throat felt like it was filled with gravel.

“Are you awake?” A soft male voice came from the bedside.

“Mmf.” Moira didn’t even raise her head. She was determined to stay in this fluffy paradise.

The voice laughed. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

Moira felt a gentle hand on her shoulder applying a light pressure as if too scared to shake her. It’s long fingers were warm against exposed skin where the blankets had fallen.

“You need to get up, or your breakfast will get cold.”

Moira tensed at the mention of food. Now that she thought about it, the room smelled of tea and toast. She pushed herself up on to her elbows and turned her head in the direction of the voice, squinting her eyes.

A young man in his early twenties sat, leaning against the bed. His right arm reached out to her shoulder where his hand rested. His dark hair was pulled back in a small bun, and long bangs hung framing his forehead and narrow eyes. He wore a dark silk vest and matching tie over a white button down with the sleeves rolled to his elbows.

Moira blinked at him slowly.

The man smiled softly, like he was comforting a frightened child. He pulled his hand away before grabbing a glass of water from the nightstand.

“Water?” he prompted holding the cup out to her.

Everything suddenly crashed back to Moira, including how she blacked out. She squeaked in fear and flinched away from the man, rolling to the other side of the bed. In her desperate flail, Moira went to stand off the bed with her legs tangled in the sheets.

She hit the floor with a loud thump and a groan.

The man rushed from his seat over to Moira where she was trying to untangle herself from the bedding.

“Are you alright?” he asked, kneeling down in front of her.

Moira froze before looking up at him with wide eyes.

“Where am I?” she asked hoarsely.

“My flat.” The man gestured to the blankets wrapping her feet. “May I help you with that?”

“Will you tell me who you are?”

“Only if you let me help,” he said.

Moira nodded slowly, looking him over for weapons. She found none.

The man brushed her hands from the bedding and proceeded to unwrap her himself.

“I hope you don’t mind the breakfast I had prepared for you. We didn’t know your preferences, and Drayce said you should stick to light foods for the time being.” He helped her to her feet.

Moira wobbled for a moment before stabilizing.

“Get back on the bed, so you can rest,” he ordered.

She got back on the bed, and he moved the pillows so she could rest comfortably against the headboard.

A knock came at the door.

“Come in!” the man called as he picked up the bedding from the floor.

Another man entered wearing similar attire to the one caring for her.

“She’s awake!” he exclaimed with a smile as he barely took several long strides to get to her bedside. He glanced at the food on the nightstand. “Have you not let her eat yet, Torryn?”
