Tobias Whale has internalization issues. Pass it on.
A Certain Fandom Faction: Claim that an endgame pairing, between two characters whose compatibility was long since well-established, was somehow devoid of chemistry (while themselves having significant overlap with supporters of a gratingly incompatible pairing). Same Fandom Faction: Claim that the endgame pairing, which had more development than any pairing that wasn’t established prior to the beginning of the story, somehow came out of nowhere (while themselves having significant overlap with supporters of a “love at first sight” pairing). Same Fandom Faction: Deny the existence of bigots in their midst, then look the other way when the bigots openly announce themselves. Same Fandom Faction: Declare the pairing “disgusting” and comparable to abuse, and claim that it ruined the franchise. Get indignant if anyone side-eyes that. Same Fandom Faction: Frame the worst of the worst behavior from supporters of the endgame pairing as a condemnation of the pairing itself. Get indignant whenever someone points out the worst of the worst behavior from their own. Same Fandom Faction: Call everyone who disagrees with them “sheep.” Same Fandom Faction: “Why are they so hateful?”
Oh; so you can’t scroll through the tag for a pairing that you’re constantly badmouthing—and in said tag, no less—without running across “hate” for your pale boy fave or your OTP?
First of all: that’s funny, because I damned well can. Just a hunch, but I suspect that you may have just a bit of a double standard regarding what counts as “hate” when aimed at your pale boy fave and your OTP versus what you feel free to say about the other pairing in its tag.
Secondly, and on that same note: cry me a river.
Straight Fans: “OMG, STFU about fictional characters’ orientations; nobody cares!” Female Character: *Has canon girlfriend.* Straight Fans: “OMG, what is this pandering Ess Jay Woo bullshit?”
Holy shit, the same dipshit who was calling established sociological concepts “Tumblrisms” just used “triggering” as a punchline with no joke attached. I could not fabricate self-awareness that far into the negatives.
Really tempted to say “speaking of Tumblrisms...” or something along those lines. But it ain’t worth it.
And...I look at a certain relevant tag—this time, the one that I don’t avoid—and promptly find someone tagging their hate to complain about (among other infractions that range from “heinous if actually true, but far from peculiar to the opposition either way” to “ridiculously trivial”) hate-tagging. But, y’know...that crew are innocent victims who never do any of the above themselves.
See a blog that looks amusing and has a seemingly insightful basic premise (namely, snarking a concept that’s dubious on account of being rooted in double standards).
Take a look at their archive.
See that they’re actively courting the attention of at least a few particularly ridiculous SQCs who willingly support the environment that allows the double standard in question to thrive. Well...so much for that.
