Something Always Goes Wrong - In Which Our Hero Finds A Faithful Sidekick
Where: Lying on the floor by the fake fireplace
When: A snow filled Saturday afternoon
Something Always Goes Wrong is either a concept album based on a Don Quixote character or an album filled with songs that Dntel decided would be clever to name beginning with "In Which Our Hero ..." The songs are very cinematic and have long development spans that evolve throughout each song so I would guess the former, at least as a guiding principal. Since I couldn't read the full names of any songs on my phone, I decided to make up my own plot as I listened to each song. It was quite easy but the plot quickly turned into something of a sci-fi Dances With Wolves plot but without enough blue people or jungles to actually be Avatar. They ended up matching pretty well in some cases like track three and five. I suggest you follow my plot if you give the whole album a listen. As a disclaimer, any plot holes can certainly be filled with some creative science fiction or magic.
In which our hero graduates at the top of his class from his training to be a soldier and heads off to war with hugs and kisses from his proud family and friends.
In which our hero discovers that the reality of the war is nothing like what he was told in school and that he will need to learn a whole new set of skills if he wants to survive. Those skills mostly revolve around being ruthless and obeying without questioning.
In which our hero dreams of the first time he saw his nation's soldiers parading through his town when he was just a boy and how awe struck he was by how brave an noble they were. He spent the rest of his childhood playing games pretending to be a soldier and following all of the glorious news from the war front.
In which our hero is tasked with surveying a village that has been cleared out for any survivors and to deal with them appropriately. When he comes upon an old man he can't bring himself to bring harm to him. They are forced to seek shelter and the old man takes the soldier into a secret network of tunnels that his people have been hiding in and the military are unaware of. The old man is berated for revealing their secrets to the enemy and the soldier is met with distrust but he is allowed to stay. The soldier learns that what he has been told about his barbaric enemy is all a lie and that they are a kind and civilized people.
In which our hero meets the old man's granddaughter and falls in love. She shows him the things that make her life full and beautiful and he questions his own values and life choices.
In which our hero returns to his base confused and finds that the military has found out about the tunnel system and plans to attack it that night. As he rides off to do the unimaginable he makes the decision to thwart the attack by sabotaging the vehicles. A fight ensues and he kills several of the other soldiers but he escapes and the rest of the unit retreats.
In which our hero is lost and alone with no home to return to. He must find his love and warn the good people of the coming attack but he is far and only vaguely remembers how to get there. He must use the techniques that his love has taught him to find the subtly hidden signs that point to the tunnels.
In which our hero finds his love and warns her people of the coming attack just in time for them for some to escape into the wilds.
In which our hero becomes a leader and rallies the people to fight because they are good and have the right to live free. Unfortunately they are under equipped and even though they put up a good fight, his love is killed along with the rest of the people he had begun to think of as his family
In which our hero is mistaken to be a captive by a group of the attacking soldiers and rescued. He finds out that word of his mutiny never got back to the base and it was assumed that all the soldiers had been killed. He rides back to the base in silence as the soldiers around him boast and laugh about the day's victory. He is empty.
