The high functioning sociopath thing really annoys me too (it doesn't exist; he's autistic). The first use was probably sarcasm and I sure as heck hope that this one was too (interpreting the character and probs not Mofftiss here sadly). Defence?
I used to rationalize it as Sherlock self diagnosing/choosing the most palatable diagnosis from his childhood or something, but after tonight’s episode, I think I do see it more like his sarcastic, snappy comeback to confuse people.
But I genuinely can’t tell sometimes with their writing. John even describes Sherlock as having Aspergers in Hounds when he’s talking to Lestrade, which is a far more likely diagnosis. Gatiss wrote that one, whereas Moffat wrote ‘A Study in Pink.’ But they both (plus Stephen Thompson) wrote the Sign of Three, so who knows.
The problem has arisen from fans taking Sherlock’s loud claims of ‘high-functioning sociopathy’ to heart. And every time someone describes/romanticizes Sherlock at such, I can’t restrain myself from going, ‘No, but actually…’
