Here!!! Have some hcs of Mako and Bolin’s childhood.
Mako didn't speak to anyone at all but Bolin for the first year. It wasn't until he was ten that he began to speak more than a few words at a time to anyone who wasn't Bolin.
When they get scared Mako goes still and quiet. Bolin fidgets restlessly and rambles.
They’ve been to two orphanages before stuck to the streets.
A couple was interested in Bolin at the first place and Mako freaked out. He ran away, taking Bolin with him.
They were caught by the police, stealing too much too slowly, and sent to the second orphanage. It was ran by and old Earthbender woman who resented any kids of Fire Nation decent. Often throwing insults their way, along with the other FN kids.
Mako starts using his Firebending for the first time since the murder. Small things like heating up their cold food.
The woman nearly broke his arm when she caught him with a tiny flame in his hand. Bolin bent a small hole from the stone building so they could escape that night.
Bolin insisted the play with the other street kids. Mako agrees but rarely engages them himself.
Bolin would talk to the other kids, always asking questions about everything, especially those who've been on the streets longer.
Mako eavesdrops and spies on the older kids and adults. Those who caught him and didn't chase him off gave him advice on how to survive.
Their first interaction with the triads was an accident. Triple Threats and Red Monsoons were having a “spat” that Mako stumbled upon and been dragged in when he had to defend himself.
Having caught their eye and having unintentionally aligned himself with them, the Tripe Threats, who saw his raw potential, began to keep tabs on him.
Bolin has always been a bit theatrical and loved the cons that he got to play it up. Mako almost always agreed to them. They made Bolin happy and tended to actually work.
When he was hungry, Bolin tried not to mention it. Especially when neither of them could do anything about it. But he developed a habit of chewing on his sleeves.
The Triple Theats that lurked around to “pal around” scout with the street kids mentioned how skinny Bolin was and that’s the main reason Mako agreed to start running messages.
Bolin was terrified of them, which caused him to move and talk a lot when they were around, which they found amusing. Engaging him dulled that fear and his rambling became more friendly. He agreed to run messages without asking Mako.
Zolt saw the detached and precise way that Mako used his fire and decided to teach him lightning. Mako was considered Zolt’s pet project by everyone in his circle. Which gave Mako a certain immunity while also painting a potential target on his back.
Mako picked up lightning fast but not without his far share of mishaps. Coming back to Bolin roughed up helped resurface Bolin’s fears of the triad members.
I honestly could make this post go on for a while. I have to many thoughts.
Today's too-far-into-my-own-thoughts contemplations: am I just awkward and a little bad at real life social interactions or am I maybe a little neuroatypical and just not diagnosed
Tune in next time for more grownup mini-crises for awkward grownups
the talk with my mother went better than expected and while she went quiet when i initially said i wasn’t going she understood when i explained the whole early morning thing. so at least there’s that 👍
