NUMBER ONE RECORD, no. 14. Courtney Barnett, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Here’s one I just spun again because I LOVE THIS RECORD. While I was typing up all these debut records I’ve been listening to in January, I mentioned The Shins “New Slang” is officially one of my all-time favorite songs, as if that matters, but it is. I had this on loud one afternoon when Marj was working downtown and I ended up declaring to @b_teddyhopper when I saw him a few minutes after listening to it, both of us in the kitchen, “’Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go to the Party’ is my favorite song! I just decided it’s my favorite song!” and he was dubious. And okay, I guess I’ve cooled a minute and am now remembering the other candidates for that title but man. THAT SONG IS SO GREAT. And then the rest of the album, that Lou Reed/Jonathan Richman speak-sing tone that Courtney has just motormouthing through songs Like “Elevator Operator” and “Dead Fox” and “Depreston.” Then there’s “Pedestrian at Best” that sounds like it came off The Pretenders’ debut (omigosh, another album I need to re-listen to for this sub-group because I wanna listen to it at every opportunity).
