Wow. I’m super disappointed.

I binge watched Carol and Tuesday today, because a friend told me it was really good. And I can firmly say, if the show was only the bits with Carole and Tuesday and on one else, I loved it. I loved the music, I like the character animation.

But then there is the HORRIFIC and extremely harmful transphobia by the writers. I’m not even going to go into detail, other than to say every trans/nonbinary character was presented as unstable and violent. 

Being real here for a moment, this isn’t something new for anime. Trans characters are very often total jokes if they appear at all. But I feel this was a lot worse than normal.

So, a show I would have given at least an 8/10, I’m giving 1/10. And I feel I’m being generous. I thought the two leads were incredibly likable - enough that I’m really bummed out about not watching season two in December. I want to. Because the story feels very incomplete at this point. But I also don’t want to give the show any more views. and I feel somewhat damaged after watching such horrible treatment of the lgbt+ characters. (There were a few good ones (wait, one?). I know. But they also weren’t at the centre of the story...) 

There were also issues with other minority representation. And I won’t try to explain it all, as it would be coming from a white perspective, but be warned of that as well. Lots of bad prison and crime references...The racism and tokenism is alive and well, unfortunately.

In short. Don’t watch it. If you are trans, certainly don’t watch it. It’s upsetting. If you aren’t trans, I’d encourage you not to watch and give them the air time. As much as that breaks my heart to say about a show that has so much good going for it.
