unfinished basic information. will be updated overtime
• his name is azrael larue, but he goes by ezra.
• he feels weird when people call him azrael, so he prefers that they don’t. the only time he’s ever called by his full name is when someone that knows him personally— like sam or dean —gets real mad, or upon meeting supernatural beings, like castiel, who initially don't grasp the idea of nicknames
• born in 1980 in maine, america to a single mother who worked a lot. nothing notable about his childhood other than the fact that he moved around a lot as a kid, and tended to be raised by passing neighbors instead of his own mother
• he has extremely dark brown hair that generally could be considered black, along with brown eyes. he also has three nasty claw marks across the expanse of his face stretching from one cheek to another that covers the bridge of his nose. the sight works wonders when trying to intimidate people, and as the seasons go on and he gets older, they start to fade, slowly getting less and less harsh looking.
• is never seen without a beanie on. there is always one on his head, and although he can be spotted wearing multiple different colored ones, his favorite is just a worn, plain red one. it goes well with his red zip up jacket and cargo pants; both staples in his usual outfit.
• ezra’s personality borders on either extremely skeptical and unimpressed, or easy going and amused. it all tends to depend on the situation, and who he’s with at the time.
• officially appears in the show around season two as a hunter. sam and dean run into him while in town for the trickster case, and he’s disguised as a new college student when they meet. the brothers eventually find out ezra is a fellow hunter, one who had been tracking this trickster down for months, after they find him sniffing around multiple of the crime scenes. ezra himself is a bit pissed off to discover that they are fellow hunters at the time, and ones that had been discovered so quickly by the trickster at that, but when they help him eventually “kill” the trickster in the auditorium, he’s a bit more friendly to the brothers. gives them his number to keep in touch. doesn’t give it to bobby, as he already has their contact info; they’d worked together on a few cases before
• for the most part, ezra is a recurring side character in the show that often serves as a plot device to help the boys out on cases. he has his own story lines separate from the winchesters that are revealed more and more throughout episodes, such as how he got the scars on his face, or his ‘one true destiny’, but there are times where he won’t show up for nearly half a season simply because he isn't needed. is like bobby in the sense that, during important finale moments or pivotal episodes, he’ll be there for the team effort, but he’s not always included in every single hunt. he’s his own character, with his own connections and monsters to hunt
• there's always an air of mystery around ezra in comparison to the other side characters. seems to know a lot more than he lets on, and often times angels will treat him as if he was a quote unquote “mistake.” more instances of this can be seen throughout the show, and it's a nod to the fact that he’s technically a self insert, and not actually a real character in the show
• one of ezra’s important character plots is the reveal that he is the true vessel for gabriel as crafted by chuck. the similarities between him and the archangel are very apparent if you know what to look for; especially when you look at ezra’s relationship with the winchesters. he loves them like the brothers he never had, and vice versa, but more often than not, he will avoid them when they are fighting with each other. much like gabriel when it comes to lucifer and michael. both of them hate being the deciding factor in literally anything, and instead tend to avoid their problems
• being the true vessel of gabriel isn't as daunting as sam and deans roles as true vessels. it’s more of a simple fact that he was made to perfectly host this ancient being. less destiny involved overall. It certainly does complicate ezra and gabriels feelings for each other, however
• in the series, ezra doesn't show romantic interest in people a lot. even if strangers will flirt with him in bars or while he's casing a town, he often brushes them off very bluntly. blatantly written to be demiromantic, but has no idea what that means. just thinks he's not that into random hookups like dean, or hell even sam. it’s very obvious what, or who, he does and doesn't want to be involved in, and he makes it very clear. however, he does have a very strange relationship with crowley and gabriel that can be described as anything other than platonic.
• he hates small spaces and werewolves. a lot of that has to do with how he got the scars on his face, but he doesn't really like to talk about it. all he’ll say is that they were the reason he started hunting in the first place
• loves pepsi and the x-men. has watched every x-men movie ten times over at the very least, and owns quite a few themed t-shirts that he likes to wear. the pepsi thing is just a giant preference; like dean and his cheeseburgers
• when ezra occasionally drops the loner routine to hunt with the boys, he’ll often take residency in the back seat of the impala. it’s always his go to spot when riding along with them, and after a while dean stops giving him weird looks when he splays himself out across the whole backseat to talk
character relationships:
dean— he and ezra butt heads a lot. they find each other hard to work with sometimes, seeing as they are both headstrong and overly sarcastic. dean usually tries to fix this by asserting his dominance over ezra as the head decision maker, and always gets annoyed when he doesn't see eye to eye. but at the end of the day, they both have each others backs when worst comes to worst, and respect each other a lot. major “bossy-older-brother and fed-up-middle-child” energy
sam— sam is like a younger brother to him. fitting, considering that ezra is actually older than sam, but he also feels like they look out for each other in the way that two younger siblings would. helps that they both also have no problems ganging up on dean together to make fun of him, adding to that imagery. while ezra might find some of sams decisions a little counterproductive sometimes, he usually does a better job at working around them than he does with dean
castiel— ezra straight up does not like him much at first. it's hard for him to get over castiel's initial righteous energy, and his trust issues don't help. after a few seasons of stubborn pushing and pulling with each others personal views, they eventually come to form a nice friendship. you don't experience all that shit together and not become friends. although ezra still prefers castiel's authentic self to his more angel side to this day. he’d much rather sit down and talk with cas about bees, or ask questions about angel nature than anything
bobby— unlike the boys, he doesn't initially see bobby as a father figure. since bobby sort of headlines the hunting operation in a large chunk of america for a lot of people, ezra views him as a coworker. a gnarled, foul mouthed, alcoholic coworker at that, but a damn good one anyways. it isn't until they build up a rapport after working together for so long that he starts to view bobby as a family. much how he does with sam and dean
gabriel— there's a sort of charged relationship between them that comes with being an angel's true vessel, and the aforementioned angel. gabriel, despite his devil could care attitude when it comes to heaven, does place a lot of value in the nature of their relationship on that. see’s ezra as a part of his existence in some way, and it's odd to him that a being as fragile as a human can play such a big role in his destiny. sort of hard to stop the protectiveness that comes with those feelings, but it’s never displayed in an overly possessive way as one might think. ezra himself takes being gabriel's vessel as almost that of a challenge to refuse, and it doesn't help that before he even knew gabriel was an angel, he had dedicated months of his life to trying to stop him as a trickster. aside from that, there's a lot of one sided flirting from gabriel that ezra doesn't do much to discourage. they definitely end up sleeping together in the later seasons.
crowley— ezra acts like he couldn't want anything more to do with the king of hell. treats every interaction with crowley like he can't wait to leave, and is annoyed with every second of their banter. that being said, he still ends up sleeping with the guy. ezra secretly kind of finds crowley funny, and not so secretly finds him attractive. quite enjoys the push and pull they have with each other, but will never admit it. definitely a lot of subtle queer undertones between the two of them that aren't really subtle thanks to crowley’s unabashed nature. their relationship with each other in terms of feelings is very different to that of gabriel and ezra’s, but its strong nonetheless.
jack— everytime he visits the bunker in the later seasons, ezra finds himself liking jack more and more. when his mom, kelly, was alive and pregnant with him, ezra had been on board with whatever kelly felt was right to do with her pregnancy. so when she decided to keep it, he had supported her against the others with castiel. because of that, jack sort of was born with an understanding that ezra was someone he could trust, which set their relationship off on the right foot. ezra also appreciates jacks blunt curiosity about things, and finds himself trying to answer as many questions as possible that the nephilim may have about the world. enjoys the energy jack brings to the already established dynamic of the bunker, and often fights with dean over how he treats jack because of it. sort of views jack as a distant family member that he gets along with, but as time goes on, the title strays further from “distant” family member to more of an “immediate” one.
chuck— ezra hates this little shit come the late seasons. finds him whiney, spoiled, and extremely selfish. really takes joy in fucking up his preestablished narrative; especially considering that chuck apparently created him on total accident. their relationship with each other is a complete one eighty from the first couple of seasons. ezra found him really amusing back then. has a soft spot for pathetic men; just not when they're omnipotent assholes
rowena— ezra likes her. or more accurately, he respects her, and doesn’t care if that gets on the winchester's nerves. he knows dedication to a craft when he sees it, and can't help but admire rowena's knack for witchcraft. does avoid her for a while, though. he doesn’t exactly want to meet the powerful mother of the demon he slept with (and secretly, neither does crowley. they both can only imagine the awkwardness that would stem from that). rowena, on the other hand, finds ezra and his attitude adorable. like how a person might feel about an angry kitten. very strange dynamic, but it's extremely entertaining. develops into something much healthier and friendly overtime.
charlie— ezra and her don't really get to interact on screen as much as other characters, but when they do, it's made very clear that the two of them are nerds. albeit nerds on the opposite ends of the spectrum from one another. all it takes is one compliment from ezra about her star wars tattoos, and charlie is all over him with friendship. ezra generally never knows how to react to such enthusiasm in people, but with charlie at the very least he can find a foothold within some of their shared interests. overall a very rare, and very sweet friendship. even if trying to keep up with charlie tires ezra out sometimes.
lucifer— this might be the only other person that ezra hates more than late seasons chuck, and for good reasons too. it’s easy to hate lucifer for the basics (trying to destroy the world, murdering hundreds of people, and even his general attitude), but ezra holds a scathing grudge against him from the time he killed gabriel. as well as how he treats / treated those close to him of course, but the real big one was that night at the hotel. more than once ezra has lost his cool simply because lucifer was mentioned or even in the same room as him, especially if lucifer was purposefully antagonizing him, and it’s always ended poorly. even though ezra isn’t as big on revenge as some people are in the show, plotting against the devil is one of the closest ways to get him on your side to date.
garth— besides sam and dean, garth is probably the closest thing to a friend his age that ezra has. they met through bobby after stopping by his cabin around the same time one day, and have been on countless hunts together since. even though garth personality and enthusiasm far outmatch that of ezras, they still get along great. garth takes ezra's hard exterior as a challenge to get him to have fun and smile; in both a figurative and literal way. it can get a little annoying, but he knows that garth is only doing it for his benefit, so he indulges him occasionally. ezra also had no problem when garth took over as “bobby” so to speak. he figures that there are a million worse options for the job out there, and that garth is a good man, so fuck it. that's also part of the reason why ezra chooses to turn a blind eye when he hears that garth is a werewolf. goes as far as to still keep in touch even after he turns
kevin— kevin is one of the few people ezra really attempts to make a connection with. maybe it's because kevin is so much younger than him, or because ezra feels guilty about sleeping with the very man that's caused so much pain in his life, but the hunter does his best to watch out for him. he feels responsible for him in some sort of way, and when kevin’s alive, ezra does what he can to check in on him and answer any questions he may have to the best of his ability. because he knows damn well that the winchester’s aren't.
overall rundown of season to season plots involving ezra. unfinished, and will be updated as i continue my rewatch.
season one: not there (no participation)
season two: this is the season in which ezra makes his debut. he really only shows up to insert himself into the narrative during “tall tales.” spends the entirety of that episode becoming acquainted with the boys, and introducing his character to the audience. at the end of “tall tales” he gives his number out to keep in touch with the boys, hinting at his possible future reappearance. isn't seen in that season afterwards. at most he's mentioned once or twice by the brothers or bobby, but that's about all. pretty much does his thing off screen. (minimal participation)
season three: in season three, sam and dean run into ezra again on a hunt. one that, this time, is not related to the trickster. their time together isn't anything more than a simple filler episode— specifically episode fourteen, the one with the crocatta —but it establishes the narrative that ezra is a recurring side character that will not be a one off appearance, and that he’s still his regular, easily annoyed self, that’s not going anywhere for a minute. at the end, he even tips sam and dean off about a possible way to keep dean from going to hell at the end of the year, giving them a heads up about a case involving an immortal doctor he read up on a few years back. when they ask him how in the hell that he knew about dean's situation, he just cryptically responds that he “gets around a lot.” (minimal participation)
season four: here is when ezra really starts to show up more. he’s less of a special guest in episodes at this point, and now more of a minor character as a whole. like bobby, almost. a lot of that has to do with the introduction of heaven and angels, as well as the whole sixty six seals thing. he gets involved with the both of them in part because of the winchesters, and in part because angels cant seem to leave him the fuck alone. he thinks they're stuck up, feathery bastards too, so he has no problem riding with sam and dean throughout the season whenever he has the chance. he helps sam and dean fight for anna against the angels, harboring her when no one else can, and is even there with them to meet chuck (low participation)
season five: mostly appears to help with research, or when the guys need some extra man power. much like last season, he's still seen keeping in touch with them more and more as the apocalypse draws closer, making time in his schedule to help them out when he might not have a year or two ago. even accompanies them a few places, like to fetch the colt from crowley, or to the hotel in indiana after a search for one of the horsemen and their rings. he’s there when jo and ellen die, and for when the colt fails on the devil. both of those events really mess with him for a while. this is a pivotal season for ezra and his character, however, as in changing channels it is revealed that he is gabriel’s true vessel, opening up a lot of (unwanted) doors for the possibility of his future. he and the archangel engage in a lot of screen time either at the same time or together this season, and when gabriel dies, ezra appears to be extremely upset by it, causing him to take a bit of a sabbatical from working with the winchesters for a few months. (fair participation)
season six: ezra is dedicated to helping dean get sam’s soul back in this season. it’s one of the things that got him out of his anti-social slump after gabriel's death. as it’s revealed via a brief retelling, ezra had gone on a hunt with soulless sam and samuel while dean was out of commission, and the things he saw them do nearly made him quit the case on the spot. straight up did not get along with either of them, and took the experience as a sign to help bobby and dean figure out how to grab sam’s soul out of the cage. ezra’s the one who figures out that death can snatch the soul back, and throws around the idea of a summoning circle for a bit before getting shown up by dean and his temporary death stunt. after that, he dips for a bit, only calling once or twice to give out information on crowley; who he was asked to help keep tabs on. (good participation)
season seven: he isn't there for a large part of the season. when the leviathans get released into the rest of the world thanks to cas, he becomes too busy mowing them down to get in contact with the winchesters to find out what the fucks going on. the closest he gets to becoming involved with the dick roman scheme is calling bobby three or four times about the leviathans, always out of breath and on the verge of death when he does so. he also reports to bobby in one of those same phone calls that cas had stopped by a few months ago, “oozing black goose and spouting about how he was going to make everything right,” which would have probably been useful to mention a while back, but he had been busy ganking leviathans since then. at the end of the season, ezra finally makes an appearance at the request of sam (along with bobby's ghost, claiming that he can help). plays a minor role in taking care of kevin up until he’s captured, and is tasked by both the winchesters and himself to make sure that the leviathans can't get their genocidal syrup out into the market on time. ends his time that season by blowing up the leviathans lab at headquarters, and running off to who knows where. (low participation)
season eight: ezra kept contact with kevin tran after he escaped from crowley's hold. unlike dean, he didn't go to purgatory, and didn't quit like sam did, so he set kevin up with an address to an old abandoned church and made sure to give him a solid phone number to reach him by. he’s actually there at the church with kevin when the winchesters show up, and accompanies them all the way to the bidding with kevin and ms. tran. this is the season where it’s made very obvious that something heated happened offscreen between crowley and ezra. once dean beats it out of him that he had slept with the king of hell, he and sam basically force him into tracking crowley, since ezra should be “extremely familiar with the douche-wad by now,” as dean put it. it’s supposed to serve as a “punishment”, and ezra goes along with it because of how guilty he feels, but it all just ends up getting him into shit. like, “up-to-his-ankles-in-demons” shit. he ambushes crowley with the demon handcuffs in the season finale as a favor to the boys and kevin, and continues to be present with sam when they haul crowley over into the church for the final trial. its his blood they use to inject crowley, he’s there when the angels begin to fall from the sky, and when crowley professes that what he wants is to be loved, all while staring directly at him. (high participation)
season nine: makes a conscious effort only to stick around for a week or two after the angels fall. after the stunt with crowley in the church, he gets this deep seated urge to run as far away as possible from him and not stop until he’s hundreds of miles away. kevin is the only person who convinces him to stay in the bunker for a bit longer, and sam and dean go along with it hoping he can keep the kid and king of hell under a watchful eye. pretty ironic that he ends up leaving in the middle of the night with a packed bag pretty much immediately after. ezra doesn't see the winchesters for months after that. he does everything he can to avoid both fallen angels and demons, spending his time living out of motels and taking on any case he sees. anytime he catches wind of anything that could possibly the brothers and the trouble they bring, he dips, making sure to cover his tracks as he goes. so imagine his surprise when one day he wakes up in his truck hundreds of miles away from where he was last staying— now parked outside castiel's motel room. it’s the set up for ezra being strung along by mettatron throughout the episode metafiction alongside castiel and gabriel. (minor participation)
