‘Can’t We Just Leave The Monster Alive?’ [track 5]

It’s been a while since I posted a song review from TXT’s ‘The Dream Chapter: Magic’ album so I’m posting another one to continue the series.

This song usually comes to the back of my mind whenever I though about posting another review for a song on this album. And I think that has a lot to do with how the song itself sounds to me; there’s this lovely melody that stays in the back of your mind. It’s not suffocating or intrusive, just a mellow sound filling me up with warmth, it’s very touching.

I tend to categorise songs based on how they make me feel and this song goes in the ‘evokes soft and tender feelings’ category because I can’t think of it without my heart softening at the thought of it. Right from the start, the slow, elongated, lulling croon that opens the song is very comforting. I find it difficult not to be touched by that opening. And I think it gives the idea that this song is meant to be consoling. The lyrics do exactly that throughout by repeating ‘It will be alright, alright, alright, alright’ in the chorus along with that same soothing melody you hear in the beginning. Hence, the song is reinforcing what it set out to do in the first place; offer warmth and solace by being consistent in reassuring you that ‘it will be alright.’ And throughout, I am convinced that ‘it will be alright’. And this track itself is about reassuring yourself and your friends that all will be fine especially for young adults, growing up can be a stressful time so reassurance is needed.

The members’ voices also help support this message to trust that everything will be okay. They too sing in a soft register that blends well with the tone of the song and they deliver the emotions well. They are communicating the song’s message and as the title suggests, even the ‘monster’ deserves to be alright hence maybe we can avoid killing it. Although the literal monster they are referring to is the one you find in a game, you can apply it to real life struggles. It’s reassuring us that it’s okay to be kinder, to forgive easily because after all, it’s alright.

When this song comes on I am always comforted, it’s doing something that’s moving and it works. It’s magic!

Here’s my first song review post on TXT’s ‘The Dream Chapter: Magic’ album.

‘New Rules’ [track 1]

So, the second I pressed play and heard the low whispered vocals of this song, my first thought was ASMR. I was so shocked to hear how the members had changed their voices to sound so smooth and cool, sexy even. It was just such a huge shift from their last album and I wanted to hear more.

As this song opened the album, it was a great start to hear how cool their sound was now and how it would be for the whole album. I love how the song is changes course by the chorus. You start with this cool, chill, nonchalant vibe that then slows down at the pre-chorus and quickens again at the bit where they sing ‘Let me go’ (chorus). And that just makes you wonder where the song will go next. 

Because of this unpredictability within the song (it seems there’s various genres at work here; hip hop, punk etc) you anticipate more and the second verse does not disappoint. This is especially clear where the beat drops where two lines after, Hueningkai sings ‘Do it what I like it’. I feel my heart jumps with the beat at that point and It’s very thrilling which of course is the whole point of the song; making ‘new rules’ because the typical world you’re living in has become boring and suffocating even with it’s usual routine.  If you watch the choreography, that part in the song where the beat drops is my personal favourite; the members look very cool and chic pulling it off. Check out the choreography here: (time stamp for where the beat drops: 1:37).

I think the choreography does a great job of highlighting the key points of the song, such as being cool and chic and not caring about the rules.

To keep this review short, (ish) one final point I’ll make about why the song is great and adds to my love for it is the length of it. ‘New Rules’ is the shorter than all the other songs on the album (2:54) and I think the length is perfect. Because the last verse repeats the first verse of the song it feels even shorter and I think this works great for a song that is meant to have a cool, nonchalant feel to it. It’s like the song is saying I’m so cool I don’t even need a different verse or to be longer than 3 minutes and I’m this cool because I’ll leave you wanting more which it does. Especially if you watch the choreography, it ends so quickly that you can’t help but feel cheated that something so cool could end. Oh and one of the best things about the song is it’s got such a relaxed vibe that it also makes you feel cool. I definitely do when I’m out walking to it.

This song is one of my favourites from the album and I am yet to tire of it because it’s just so good and I keep wanting more. I think it was a great choice for opening the album and I am greatly satisfied and blown away by this song and the rest of the album; my love for TXT only grows bigger.
