This song to the Royal Architect herself. (I finally figured out how to do the song thing, everyone be proud of me)
Tr!Ros’s need to feel helpful, yet putting down her own self worth all the time. Always seeking advice from others, but never truly believing the words.
I feel like building for her was her way of feeling useful, but she always thought that it was never enough. Like her contributions were insignificant compared to others.
Maybe for her though, in the times when she got lost in her own mind, maybe she believed. Building the castle, doing what she did best. Create. She’s the one who created the connection between the Yellow kingdom. She’s the glue keeping it all together. In some sense, she’s the one putting together the puzzle pieces. Like building. Even if she didn’t really know she was doing it.
Anywho this song is basically like when your creating, you feel like maybe you can finally be in control of the situation and that you feel you can expand past your limits and be your ideal self. It’s like being lost in the whimsey of creating things and feeling unstoppable. Uhhhm. Idk that’s just my interpretation but this is a bad explanation Andi just wanted to write about Tr!Ros because this song reminded me of her :3

Summary: While thinking of the memories you had before arriving at Castle Dimitrescu, you recall a song that you used to play on the piano when you were young. It held a special place in your heart. It's been a couple of years since you've played the piano though, so you need some practice. Bela might be able to help with that. Maybe once you're done you can show Alcina.
Warnings: None! Just some lovely family bonding :))
Characters: Alcina Dimitrescu x Reader, with appearances from the Dimitrescu daughters!
Notes: Another one of my older fics! You can read the original here. This fic is definitely more self-indulgent because I grew up surrounded by music. Piano lessons, singing, dancing and the like, but I think this fic is fluffy and can be enjoyed by all! Happy reading, lovelies~
When you think back, you remember being surrounded by music. Ever since you were young, you remember singing, dancing, and going to small concerts. As you grew up, your parents insisted you play an instrument because you had "a musical ear" that would be able to find a rhythm and match pitch, no matter what. You loved piano especially, but you played instruments like guitar and ukulele among others. But as you grew up you slowly drifted away from all that. Of course, you still loved music, listening to it all the time. But you no longer had the time to play any instruments or spend the day singing away.
Nevertheless, music carried you through your teenage and young adult years, acting as an escape to your reality and a way to connect the emotions you felt with others.
When you arrived at Castle Dimitrescu on that fateful day, you were overjoyed with all the old gramophones and record players that would play old melodies from times past throughout the house. They even had an opera hall with a stunning piano at the center. It was like living the dream.
But despite having a beautiful piano at your disposal, you never found time to play it. Would you even remember how to play? Let alone be able to play a song by memory alone? You didn't really want to find out, saving yourself from the disappointment of losing such a large part of your childhood. So you just let it be, until one day.
Alcina had to wake up early, gently rousing you from your sleep saying she was going to be busy for the rest of the day. You pouted, but there was nothing you could do, she had to work after all. And so, she went off, leaving you with a gentle kiss to your lips, letting you sleep some more.
By the time you had pulled yourself out of bed, the girls had already left for a hunt as their mother had given them permission at dinner the night before.
Essentially, you were alone in this massive castle.
Okay, maybe not. Alcina was still home, but you couldn't bother her while she worked, because that would only prolong the days she would have to spend on it. But it was quiet, which was odd because the house was always lively with the voices of the girls drifting through the corridors. It was weird.
Ignoring the quiet atmosphere, you took the time to wander the castle. Despite having lived here for so long, you still knew you haven't explored every nook and cranny of the castle with it being so massive and all. You probably wouldn't ever be able to explore everything anyway, because you didn't dare venture down to the cellar often, and when you did, it was usually with Alcina or one of the girls. It was spooky down there, those creepy monster things wandering around. Your girls would be fine, they were powerful beings after all, but you were a mere human that could die down there. Even if you weren't human, it was still creepy nevertheless.
But aside from the cellar the castle was still beautiful, so when you had time to wander around you did. The architecture was all dark academia, ornate decorations by warm coloured wood, knights by the fireplace, all the fineries of life. Living in a place like this was your dream growing up, as would be anyone. I mean, it was like straight out of a fairytale!
You walked in a leisurely place, admiring everything in your surroundings. The quiet helped you see little things you hadn't before. You walked until you reached the other end of the castle, ending up at the entrance of the Opera Hall. Deciding to go in, you walked down the stairs into the hall.
It was really beautiful, like a miniature version of the great theatres they would show in period films you used to watch. People would look down at the performers from their boxes in the audience, their little binoculars helping them see.
As a child you would imagine yourself there on the stage, playing the piano for people to hear. Of course as you grew up reality set in, but the dreams you had as a child were so pure. You smiled, thinking back.
Looking around, your eyes settled on the piano that sat in the center of the hall.
Playing it for a bit wouldn't hurt, right? You thought. Perhaps you did still remember how to play, everyone said it was like riding a bike after all, you never truly forget. If you tried and succeeded, wonderful! If you didn't, then that was that. Nothing lost.
Making up your mind, you settled yourself on the bench and pressed down on a few keys. Then all of a sudden you remembered a song you used to love as a child. It was a song that you were sure was gonna be the song you had your first dance to at your wedding. Thinking back, you can understand why. It was a beautiful song, and it was easy to picture you and Alcina slow dancing to it, both dressed up, love in each of your eyes. You blushed at the thought.
While in your head, you didn't notice a figure materializing next to you until they spoke up.
"What are you doing, Mama?" Bela said curiously. You, on the other hand, nearly jumped out of your skin. "Bela! When did you get there? You scared the living daylights out of me, oh my gods." You clutched your chest in surprise, your heart filling with joy all the while with her presence. The girls had taken to calling you "mama" now, and it made you happy to no end.
"I've actually been here for a while. I'm surprised you didn't notice me. Although I guess you were too far in your thoughts to realize," she said, amusement in her eyes. "What were you thinking about?"
You shifted over and gestured for her to join you on the piano bench. Once she settled in, you said, "I was just thinking about a song I used to love when I was younger, and I was gonna try and see if I could remember how to play it on the piano."
"Hm, why'd you love it so much that you remember it after all this time?" she asked.
You laughed lightly "I wanted this song to be the one I had my first dance to at my wedding. Actually, I think I still want it to be. It's really beautiful,"
"Ah, I see. No wonder you were grinning like a fool when I came in. You were imagining you and Mother, weren't you?" she smirked.
"You know me too well, it's scary Bela. Are you sure you're not psychic?" you asked, glaring playfully.
"Well, if I was, I definitely wouldn't tell you!" she said, giggling. You poked her side with a laugh. "Fair point."
"Well," you said, continuing, "it's probably not that important. It's been so long, I don't even remember how to play the piano anymore".
Bela sat there, contemplating.
"Well, if you remember the melody, I can probably figure out the notes for you," she suggested. Your eyes lit up in delight.
"Really? You know how to play?" you asked, surprised.
She turned her head to the side to avoid you seeing her embarrassment, but you could see the red spread to her ears despite her efforts. You had to hold in a laugh at how cute she was being. Even though Bela was the eldest child, acting mature and calm, there were moments like these where you could still see her childish side.
"I might... play every once in a while. When I'm bored and wanna escape Dani and Cass" she mumbled. You chuckled lightly despite all efforts, patting her head gently.
"That's really nice to hear Bela. Do you wanna play something for me?" you asked, interested.
She turned to you, panic in her eyes.
"Do I have to? I don't... I don't wanna make any mistakes..." she trailed off.
"You don't have to do anything, my darling," you say reassuringly, "it's only if you want to."
She takes a moment to decide. Seemingly making up her mind, she takes a breath and seemingly makes up her mind, and sets her fingers on the keys.
"Don't judge me if I make a mistake, okay?" she says worriedly. "I would dream of it, my dear," you say, patting her head once more.
She takes another breath and begins playing a soft relaxing melody, the sound reminding you of twinkling stars on a quiet night. The song suited her, you thought, smiling.
Bela had her eyes closed, clearly absorbed in the song she was playing. It was a beautiful sight, and you were proud, as any parent would be. You adored these girls so much.
The song slowly came to a stop after a couple of minutes. It was absolutely entrancing, and Bela couldn't have played it any better. She turned to you, awaiting your reaction with expectant eyes.
You laughed lightly at her expression, kissing her on her forehead gently.
"That was beautifully played, Bela. I'm proud of you," you said. Her eyes lighting up with joy before blushing heavily at the compliment. She never handled compliments well, you thought amusedly.
"Thank you, Mama," she said, leaning into your touch. Pulling away slightly, she says, "Okay, now let's get working on this song, shall we?" clapping her hands together.
"Yes, let's," you say with a grin.
"Can you hum the melody so I can figure out how it goes?" she asks.
You nod in acknowledgement and begin humming the song's melody as you remember it. It took a couple of tries to get it right, but eventually, Daniela developed the melody and accompaniment with ease.
"You play wonderfully Bela! You should show your mother and sisters some time." you say, nudging her shoulder gently.
She looks at you with horror, "No way! It was already scary enough showing you. I can't go through that again!" you laugh outwardly at her dramatics. Gods, Bela can be so amusing sometimes.
"Okay, okay, It's just a suggestion~," you say.
She shakes her head as if to say, "no way!" You hummed. Perhaps it would be nice to be the only one in the family to hear Bela play, you think to yourself. You grinned at her as she looked at you. "Why don't we get to trying to teach me how to play this, yeah?" She nods in agreement at you, slowly point out the notes that made up the melody of the first 4 passages.
It took a few tries for you to get it with her playing the accompaniment on your left. It took another few tries for you to be able to play the piece by yourself, but overall it wasn't too bad.
"This is easier than I thought it would be," you say, "I guess you never really forget how to do something."
"Are you gonna play this for Mother?" she asks, looking at your curiously. Now it was your turn to blush. Playing this for Alcina? No way! Actually, that might be nice...
"Maybe I will if I can get this song well. You'll help me out, right?"
"Of course I will, mama," Bela said with a smile, happy to be able to spend time with you more.
So for the rest week, you take a few hours of the day to spend with Bela, practicing. Daniela and Cassandra wondered where you both would wander off to, but didn't question it too much because they were used to the two of you going off to read together. They still missed you during this time though, so you made sure to spend time with them when you weren't with Bela.
Alcina was the most curious though, wondering where you went off to for most of the day. One night she gets tired of not being able to spend time with you and decides to talk to you about it.
"What have you been doing lately? I feel like I hardly see you anymore, my love." She says, sadness in her eyes as she settles down on one of the chairs.
Guilt washes over you. Despite doing all this for her, she's the one you've been neglecting the most. You walk over to where she's sitting and climb into her lap, her arms wrapping around your waist automatically, holding you there, waiting for you to speak.
You sigh, kissing her lips gently. "I'm sorry, I've just been working on something. For you." Curiosity crossing her face at your words. You decided to not tell her about the fact that you've been working with Bela, figuring she would tell Alcina on her own terms.
"Oh, and what may this thing be?" she asks. You just grin at her as she waits expectantly. "I'm not telling you~" Disappointment flashed in her eyes.
You felt a bit guilty hiding everything from Alcina, but that's the entire point of a surprise. "I'm kidding. Actually, no I'm not. I won't tell you right now, instead, I'll just show you what it is tomorrow. Okay?" you say, kissing her again. You realized how much you missed Alcina, nuzzling your head into her chest. She kissed the top of your head affectionately and combed her fingers through your hair, making you feel all warm inside.
"Very well, my darling. I'm excited to see what you have in store for me." she says, amused.
She carried you over to the bed, lying you face to face with her, holding you close. You both revelled in each other as you fell asleep in each other's arms.
The next day you wake up wrapped up in Alcina's arms, and with a content sigh you snuggle in a little closer. Of course, you loved spending time with the girls, but Alcina was the love of your life. Nothing felt better than being in her arms.
Alcina slowly woke up, gazing down at you with her glowing golden eyes.
"Good morning, dearest," she said, her voice still thick with sleep making it low and a bit raspy. The sound made a shiver go through your body, one she of course noticed with amusement, a smirk pulling across her lips. You blushed at her reaction.
"Good morning, my love." You said, smiling up at her. Simple mornings like this were the best, where you could simply lie in her arms and be with her. No worries in the world.
You both shared a tender, soft kiss. There was no rush, just love. Gods, how were you lucky enough to end up with her?
"So, are you gonna tell me what this thing you've been working on is?" she asked, mirth in her eyes.
You kissed her nose gently, "Nope, not yet darling. Didn't I say I was gonna show you instead?" you said, playfully, admiring how beautiful she looked in the morning light.
"Hm, I suppose you did. So when are you gonna show me," she says impatiently, gripping your waist lightly.
"Not now", you say, laughing at her reaction to your words as you boop her nose. She looked so cute. "I'll show you after dinner, okay? I'll take you there after we eat."
She only hummed at your words, pouting a bit. That made you laugh out loud. Who knew the all-powerful Alcina Dimitrescu could pout?
You kissed her lips again, "Come on, Alci, it's only a few more hours."
"Fine," she grumbled. "This better be worth the wait. Now come on, up. I have to do a bit of paperwork before then" she says, patting your butt playfully.
You laughed again, rolling off of her and flopping onto the mattress. You admired her form as she got up from the bed to get ready for her day. The way she walked, the way her hips swayed in the process, how she would look sans clothes... She began pulling off her nightgown before glancing back at you, "What a naughty pet, staring at me like that." she says, looking down at you, fire burning in her eyes. You blushed red at her words, hiding under the covers. "Whatever are you talking about Alci?" you mumbled. She only laughed at your antics, only making you blush harder.
You peeked back out over the comforter at her form, still wondering how you were lucky enough to be loved by someone like her. She looks back at you again, you freezing as you got caught again. She chuckled lightly. You were so whipped for her, someone help.
"As much as I would love to ravish you right now" you blushed, YET AGAIN, at her words "I have things to attend to, and I assume you do too. So we'll leave that for later, yes?" she says, winking at you. You nod in admission, climbing out of bed too. She leaves one last kiss on your lips before leaving the room, leaving you all flustered. But you began to get ready, leaving to practice Bela one last time before having to show Alcina.
Time flew by, and all of a sudden it was dinner time. Everyone sat around the table, each enjoying their respective meals. Alcina glancing at you periodically in curiosity, wondering what you had planned. You only grinned at her, giving nothing away.
Once the affairs of dinner were done, you walked over to Alcina, taking her hands in yours, and began leading her to the Opera Hall.
You were nervous, you admit it. Alcina noticed your nervousness and squeezed your hand reassuringly. "Darling, there's no need to fret, I'll love anything you have planned for me," she says gently. You smile, nerves calming a bit at her words.
As you entered the hall, you lead her to one of the chairs located near the piano. And without you and Alcina noticing, three little swarms entered the hall too, Bela coming in to listen, her sister's in tow, looking curiously at you.
You took a seat on the piano bench, taking a breath. You understood how Bela felt when she played for you now, being in her shoes.
You looked over at Alcina, her eyes showing surprise. "I didn't know you played, my love."
"I haven't played ever since I was a child, hence why it took so long for me to finish working on this. But I wanted to show you this song because it... " you decided to not tell her about the whole first dance thing. No need to embarrass yourself, right? "...it holds a dear place in my heart. I-, I hope you like it Alci", you say, smiling at her nervously.
She simply nods, looking at you in anticipation. You were ready for this, you've been practicing so hard after all, and had Bela's help too. You took a deep breath and began playing the piece.
You put all your emotion into the song, pouring your heart into each note. You wanted Alcina to feel everything you felt for her, every emotion you couldn't put into words. You wanted to show you how much you loved her.
Your fingers flew across the piano, playing the gentle melody with practiced ease until slowly the song came to a stop.
You slowly opened the eyes you didn't realize you closed, looking to her for her reaction.
Your eyes widened to see a soft expression on her face, a loving smile gracing her lips. Her expression wanted to make you cry.
"Alci?" you asked, walking over to her. As you got close, she pulled you into her lap, kissing you. Every emotion she felt as you played was poured into this kiss, like what you did as you played your song. Slowly, she pulled away.
"That was beautiful, my love," she said, pressing your forehead against yours.
"Thank you", you whispered softly, knowing if you spoke up tears would start flowing. She held you close, kissing your forehead gently.
"THAT WAS SO AMAZING MAMA!!" Daniela screeched, emerging from the shadows.
"Dani!" Cassandra exclaimed, "We were supposed to stay hidden!" she said. But she turned to you afterwards, "But yes, that was very beautiful mama. I never knew you could play!"
You glanced at the last shadow hiding in the corner in amusement.
"Sorry mama, I just wanted to come to see Mother's reaction, but these two decided to tag along," she said apologetically. Then she glanced to Alcina, saying "But I'm happy I tagged along. You know, mama said she wanted this song to be the song you both danced to at your wedding!" she said before you could stop her. You blushed bright red at her words. That little traitor.
Daniela squealed with delight, "Oooh! A wedding! I wanna go to a wedding!" Cassandra nodded excitedly in agreement.
Alcina walked over to her youngest daughter, patting her head.
"Hm, maybe a wedding will be in order soon. I couldn't imagine anyone else I'd want to be with other than your mama after all," she said, smiling down at you. You only blushed harder at her words. What's up with Alcina and flustering you today?
"Maybe," you said. Grinning up at her, Alcina smiling back fondly.
"In any case, Bela should play next, yes? She was the one who's been teaching me all this time after all," you say, the girl in question freezing at your words. Ha, payback!
"Bela? I didn't know you played? I would love to hear it," Alcina said to her eldest daughter.
"Yeah, Bela! You should play for us!" Cassandra said.
You laughed at her panicked expression, glaring at you after meeting your gaze.
Yeah, moments spent like this with your family were the best.
Author's Note: I left the song that you were playing open to be anything you wanted to be to make it more personal. Do you have a special song that you hold dear? For me, it's either Epic III (They danced...) from Hadestown or Merry Go Round of Life from Howl's Moving Castle. I'm dead set on having these two songs play at my wedding in the future (if I get married of course, I definitely want to though, lol).
As an aside, reading back on this after almost an entire year I feel like my writing style has changed a lot, haha. And holy GODS did I use so many commas. Anyway, till next time!!
