SegaSonic Silver the Hedgehog Characteristics Guide

This post is inspired by a tweet by Daniel Barnes. SegaSonic is the consistent way Sonic Team depicts the series and characters(particularly without localization changes) and things that align with it. This post serves as a guide to SegaSonic Silver.

Justice: Silver is driven by a strong sense of justice and strong convictions to fight for the future. He is outraged by injustices and is righteous to the point of viciousness, making him very confrontational and willing to take on anyone or anything to fight for what is right. Silver sometimes calls forth great power without mercy, however his wish is to maintain peace, not to eradicate evil for his priority is always protecting others. Not wanting to defeat the enemy but create a peaceful state, but he is still strict against evil. Silver has different principles from a typical hero and can be ruthless in his methods(including robbing(Rivals 2), tricking(06) and killing). Silver has an honor code that includes valuing courage, disliking cowardice, maintaining fairness and earning respect. Silver will seek to settle scores and win for those that have been wronged. Silver’s sense of justice and duty is one of the many things that mirrors and bonds him with Blaze.

World Peace: Silver has a gentle soul that desires peace. Silver is devoted to world peace because he hails from a hellish ruined future that was filled with endless darkness, devastation and people in despair. Silver has great empathy for both people and nature, so devastated environments sadden and upsets him while beauty and prosperity takes his breath away. People’s smiles make him smile and blue skies make him feel at peace. Silver is deeply sentimental and appreciates beauty and the little things in life more than anyone. He has great gratitude for the peaceful world to the point of naming his drink “The Gift of the Peaceful World”. He can be contemplative and introspective, silently contemplating the morality of his actions in 06, talking about legends with Sonic(“isn’t that impressive?”), quietly reading books alone in Kingdom Valley and breathlessly admiring the beauty and prosperity of Soleanna. Silver’s favorite food is apples which represent sweetness and prosperity. Silver’s quills are in the shape of the Japanese Red Maple Leaf which represents world peace, prosperity and serenity.

Positivity: Silver is an optimist with a positive mindset and philosophy. Silver embodies hope just as Sonic embodies freedom. Silver struggled through a dark ruined future because he believed in restoring the blue sky when no else did. He never gives up hope no matter how hopeless the situation as he believes there’s hope as long as you don’t give up. Silver’s hope and perseverance exceed even Sonic and Shadow’s as he didn’t give up even when Elise or Sonic died and everyone around him fell into despair. Silver has hope to see solutions no one else does(Reviving Sonic in 06, sending the rookie in Forces). Silver has a sincere, unpretentious and kind demeanor and positive energy that is noted when absent(Team Sonic Racing). He has a positive way of life that inspires people and makes them want to support him. He was able to help Elise through her performance anxiety in Otherworld Comedy and rally everyone to back action in the darkest moments of the Eggman war and Solaris destroying time. He has an enchanting smile that filled Elise with trust and a food recipient couldn’t say no to. He is considered pretty.

Kindness: Silver is a kind-hearted altruist that is always thinking of someone else’s happiness rather than his own. Silver is wholly selfless and willing to sacrifice himself without even thinking to protect world peace and the people’s smiles. Silver has a strong desire to help others that is both the reason for his mission and the only thing that can make him break from it as he can’t ignore those in need and will stop to help people even when it’s difficult for him. Silver cherishes his friends and is genuinely grateful to the people who help him. He is devoted and never abandons others. Silver enjoys service jobs, handing out food, giving presents, being an entertainer and other activities that support and make people happy in his down time. Silver wants to “protect smiles” and make people happy because he grew up in a world filled with despair. Silver wishes to use his powers not for himself but to help others and is at his most powerful when “protecting” something.

Forthright: Silver is straightforward and honest. As a straightforward person, Silver is direct, genuine, free of deception, straight to the point, his words and actions are dominated by feelings and he means whatever he says. Silver is blunt and wears his heart on his sleeve while Sonic and Shadow are coy and stoic respectively. Silver has a straightforward mindset and is so honest that he cannot tell lies(though he can still withhold information, particularly when it comes to his troubles or things that might endanger others). Silver has a sincere and unpretentious demeanor(Sonic Channel staff coulmm), he is very frank and earnest but can also be quite blunt and impolite because he speaks and acts so straightforwardly. Silver is transparent and there is no gap between who he is and how he presents. This pure genuine nature allows people that get to know Silver to quickly develop great trust in him(Espio in Sonic Rivals 2, Blaze in their initial meetings) and allows even normally shy and withdrawn people like Blaze to be open and warm with him(Japanese Sonic 06 character bios). He is fair and doesn't hold back no matter who his opponent is. He doesn’t discriminate no matter size, species or gender and accepts people for who they are. He is indifferent to fashion or romance and doesn’t care about appearances but is also an unconsciously handsome guy that doesn’t realize how good looking he is. Despite his cocky attitude, Silver is quite humble and does not think of himself as a hero but rather just someone trying not to mess up time, only caring about results instead. Silver has all the qualities of a Taurus. Silver is themed around purity and everything from his namesake, white color, youth, innocence, honesty, unfilteredness, immaturity, emotional intensity and positivity tie into this. Silver’s pure nature is why his counterpart is Galahad, the purest and most chaste of all knights.

Focus: ①:Silver is very focused and has a straight-to-the-point mentality because he has a straightforward mindset. He is pragmatic and only cares that a plan works, not what it's called. Silver is goal focused(the Jade Wisp’s Ghost ability is Silver’s favorite racing item because it lets him disappear and focus on racing) and hates distractions, unnecessary details, time wasting or things getting in his way(remarks “what am I doing?” and “I was an idiot for asking” when side tracked by Amy and Sonic) which ties into his impatience and impulsiveness as he can be single minded and get tunnel vision for his objectives. ②:Silver is careful and attentive, more serious than Sonic and is as hyper focused on his duty/takes things as seriously as Blaze, however this seriousness can also cause Silver to be worrying towards possible danger(Dodon Pa in TSR) or what is the right thing to do(06), causing him to pause, he can get so focused that he can zone out. Silver’s focus shows his intense expressions, even during casual activities such as reading. ③:Silver’s powers are based on his focus and that same focus to psychically control objects with technical skill and precision also makes Silver notably perceptive(saw through Eggman Nega’s disguises by noticing small details, gets Doctor Eggman to reveal his plans in Team Sonic Racing), have great situational tenacity(manipulates his environments and situations throughout 06, turns his fight with Sonic into a race to collect Chao in Sonic Rivals 2, demonstrating in the moment cleverness) and strong, possibly psychic, intuition(intuits how to revive Sonic in 06’s Last Story and Blaze trying to control great power in Otherworld Comedy). Silver is also inquisitive as he proactively sought answers for ending Iblis when no one else did, investigated Dodon Pa when he was deeply suscpious of him and solved mysteries in all his major game roles with seeking the truth being a recurring theme for Silver. Despite his naivety, Silver isn't trusting, seeing past the tricks of Eggman Nega, being wary of Rouge, not telling Espio what was going on until he trusted him and not following Mephiles until time travel was proven real to him.

Attitude: Silver has a punkish personality that can be rough and rugged. Silver is a little immature(Shun Nakamura interview) and somewhat juvenile(similar to Jet the Hawk). Silver is so straightforward and honest that he is blunt and rude, especially rude to those against him, but also friends occasionally. Silver speaks bluntly, doesn’t have a filter, will call you an idiot to your face if he thinks you’re an idiot and isn’t afraid to tell people to shut up. He is abrasive and has a snide sarcastic attitude. Silver is very confident, has a somewhat smug attitude about his abilities and hates being underestimated/looked down on. He is hot-blooded and has aggressive behavior, expressions and dialogue(“Let’s go”, “I am not to be trifled with”, “Get out of my way”, “Dammnit”, “I’ll kill you”, many such lines). He is headstrong, competitive and doesn’t take disrespect from anyone(regardless of their age, size or gender) which can lead to him getting into fights for both serious and petty reasons(clashes with Blaze whenever they meet for the first time, races Sonic Man when he gave him a belittling look, various fights in the Sonic Rivals series, going to Infinite in Sonic Forces, multiple such confrontations in the Mario & Sonic series, particularly with Bowser Jr.). Silver is stubborn and does not give up easily(got exact Silver cut apples after 40 tries). He is bold and takes on everything head on, he stands up to any challenge and meets all opposition with heroic epic declarations(he speaks like a shonen anime character) and over the top fervor, which both ties into his ability to inspire others but can conversely come off as unhinged. He also has a mischievous side. Silver is more rude/has more attitude than Sonic and has various informal mannerisms in how he speaks and acts. Silver’s impoliteness and immaturity is an aspect of his straightforwardness and purity.

Emotional: Silver is high-spirited and emotionally unregulated. Silver's strong feelings sometimes lead him to deal with things too head-on or take everything on himself. Silver cares very strongly in ways that cause him to take things more seriously than Sonic and be very protective. Silver’s emotional intensity gives him a tendency to be impulsive(which is what Mephiles uses to manipulate him in 06) and reckless(such as when he goes to face Infinite alone in Sonic Forces) but conversely can also cause him to pause and worry because of how much he cares. Silver is hot-headed and explosive while Sonic and Shadow are calm and cool-headed. Silver feels joy and rage loudly but sadness and contemplation quietly. He has a fierce short temper but conversely can also get fired up with enthusiasm and puts his all into anything he tries. Silver can be dramatic, he punches things when he is frustrated, gets indignant when people don’t listen to him and is a somewhat loose canon because of his emotional explosiveness. So Silver is usually partnered with stoic people(Blaze, Shadow, Espio) that pull him back. In the original Japanese version of 06, Blaze is worried about Silver running wild/going berserk(like he does throughout the Sonic Rivals series) rather than being insecure when alone(a mistranslation).

Naive: Silver is naive and has a somewhat black and white perspective, he is notably innocent due to hailing from a ruined future where he spent most of his time battling Iblis. He can approach things very bluntly and expect people to believe he’s from the future or other outlandish things just because he knows they’re true(which leads to people thinking he’s crazy and Silver getting angry). He sometimes does not understand social cues, takes things literally or doesn’t get jokes, taking things completely seriously(but has an angry “what’s so funny?” attitude about it) which can lead to confusion or awkwardness when he doesn’t know how to navigate certain situations. Notably not understanding Blaze’s sacrifice. He also doesn't know how to express or explain himself at times. He doesn't know how to question certain things and can struggle with right and wrong(06). Because he’s from the destitute apocalyptic future, he is ignorant of many things but is also wide eyed for new and interesting things or experiences he’s never had before and has a strong sense of curiosity and spirit of challenge in anything he tries. Always learning, grappling with struggles and striving to move forward(Sonic Channel staff Column).

Warrior: Silver fought and struggled for half his life in the destroyed future against the forces of Iblis(dark hostile environments, disasters, Iblis minions, Iblis itself) and is a fierce and feral warrior because of it. This shows outside of combat in Silver’s regular activities as he has highly aggressive expressions and body language with constant fists even when playing games, an instant fight response to being surprised in Sonic Generations and noted as a warrior at rest when simply reading a book. Silver has a warrior honor code that values bravery and dislikes cowardice. Silver has relentless determination that has fought through constant hardships and horrors in life, never giving up no matter how he’s hurt or how desperate the situation. He's extremely brave, has extreme pain tolerance(shrugs off being scraped across a street and pain beyond description from his powers), throws himself at threats with no regard for his own safety and faces everything head-on. Silver’s fighting spirit and tenacity is highly respected by characters like Shadow. He enjoys fighting(fights his friends and robots in the future for fun). Silver has high fighting power that rivals Sonic and Shadow, he can evenly fistfight them without his psychic powers and can defeat giant monsters like Iblis or small armies of enemies by himself with his powers. Silver has butterfly shaped upturned eyes which represent strong will and intensity in character design.

Challenger(Misc): When not on missions, Silver enjoys the peace he works so hard to protect by experiencing the world’s wonders, beauty and challenges. Silver engages in cheerful activities after the historical change in 06. For fun, Silver likes activities that help people and put smiles on their faces ranging from service jobs to entertainment. He has a strong sense of curiosity and spirit of challenge in anything he tries. He will try new things and go to places to see the challenge they pose or interesting things he's heard of. He enjoys challenges, competitions, sports, racing, ways to test himself(climbed Tokyo Tower) and trying new and interesting things he never had before. Enjoying the most of life in the peaceful world. He loves sightseeing and going on journeys to enjoy the beauty of the world as well as serene activities such as peacefully reading by himself in the quiet ruins of Kingdom Valley. He also has a soft spot for cute things(plays with Chao in Rivals 2 and a magazine comic) and a mischievous side that he can have cheeky fun with. Silver is a Fly/Technique Type character so he specializes in technical skills, acrobatics and balance/control. Silver is a hard worker that makes steady efforts to train/improve his skills and takes offense to being treated like an amateur. Like Blaze, Silver is a capable and skilled professional that can have a careful and attentive demeanor and skillfully accomplish various missions, odd jobs and dangerous scenarios across Soleanna largely by himself(06 Town Missions), working as security and investigating things like a monster in a restaurant. His talents include being an ice skater, a genius skating coach, a delivery boy and more. Silver is so precise with his powers that he was able to get one of the highest target shooting scores in Soleanna’s 1500 year history. One of Silver’s catchphrases is “I’ll take you on”.
