I checked the wiki earlier and I’ve just checked it again and this is what the Plot sub header said about Shadow’s rival fight:
Shadow isn’t possessed here. The Time Eater yoinked the Shadow from the SA2 final rival fight (who is still trying to blow up the planet and is currently fighting sonic over the fake chaos emerald) and placed him in White Space. He’s not possessed. To him there’s nothing weird going on, he’s just fighting this blue hedgehog who keeps getting in his way.
This all depends on the wiki information being correct though, but generations was never a story-rich game anyways. I admit some options were exaggerated or straight up wrong because I can’t count, but I did check the wiki for the scripts of the mainline games and prominent spin-offs.
