Because Mr. and Mrs. ------, That's Why
I celebrated my 18th at Bonifacio High Street with people and things that get me drunk out of my head.
Things that get me drunk out of my head = books, Pancake House's spaghetti with meat sauce (best thing ever), macarons, pudding and cupcakes. Not necessarily in that order. 2STRAIGHTEDGE4U
Aaaaanyway. It was all very last-minute so everyone I asked to come couldn't make it, but at least Kat was able to drop by! And I was with my two best friends, so that was more than enough.
Dad, for the first time since I graduated from high school, offered to drive us there, so I was very grateful. Our first stop was naturally Fully Booked.
Found some Bowie in the vinyl section! I figured I'd just look for him in Cubao X some other time instead of buying right then, though, because Fully Booked's vinyl is unfortunately pretty overpriced.
In the CD section, I found some Metric (Php350, a steal, but I decided to just go back for it) and Ryan Adams and the Cardinals' Cardinology (Php900, sob).
I wanted The Hangover badge pack but ultimately thought it wasn't worth it.
What I did deem worth it, though, are books, so I let myself overspend without thinking on them just this one time (really, Fiel? "just this one time?"). (Come on!) I started Time Between Us last week (you know, before YouTubers took over my life) and I thought it'd be good enough to buy a physical copy right away. I wasn't wrong. It's so pretty on hardbound, and the jacket-less binding is Tiffany-blue with silver-debossed letters, ahhhh. The Book Thief is self-explanatory--hail Zusak! Finally, I pretty much fangirled by myself (s i g h) when I saw that they had First Comes Love in their catalog because YOU KNOW I LIVE FOR GRAY THOMAS. I'm just so happy I finally own it legally and physically and wow hardbound copies are addictive.
There were lots of jokes about a Justin Bieber sticker that said "I <3 Justin," and you know we weren't thinking about Bieber at all.
Speaking of Justins that are not Bieber. After paying for my books (it was so hard to choose and narrow it down to three choices without overspending, but I'm happy with the purchases! yay birthday book binging!), we started to head for the front entrance so we could leave for lunch. We were talking about something when I saw that a couple were entering the store so I told Camille to move to the side so we won't be in the way.
Camille gripped my arm. "Wait, isn't that--?"
I looked. Wasn't sure. Stared. Looked at the other person.
Justin's parents--the Justin, my Dev--were walking into Fully Booked, all fabulous and shit. (Don't ask me how I know, okay? Ask Camille.)
I mean, come on, it's just so hilarious. Of all the places and the people and the times in the world. We could have run into anybody. Heck, we didn't even have to run into anyone at all. But them? God, the Fates have a ridiculous strange of humor.
We must have reacted so strangely because the guard started asking us who the couple was. Weirdos. (And by that, I mean us. I always mean us.)
"Where's your son?!" I kept yelling after them.
Kat met us outside Fully Booked, and after lunch at Pancake House, I treated them to dessert at Chez Karine. Thanks for the photos, Kat!
Their macarons were a bit chewy for my taste, but I liked their mint chocolate, salted caramel, peanut butter and maple bacon variants a lot. The frosting was perfect and mousse-y and gush-worthy!
But Kat was right--you're going to love the shop for their pudding. We got chocolate and muscovado pudding and mango panna cotta. I've never really loved pudding, but then again, maybe it's just because the pudding has never been this good. The little jars are so cute!
I borrowed this shot from Photo Kitchen, a local food photography business. They're really great! After some lounging around outside Chez Karine--where we saw my future in-laws again (I kid, not about seeing them again though!) so I took the opportunity to whisper creepily and jokingly, "Where's your son?! No, seriously," once more--we moved next door to Sonja's for cupcakes for them and me to take home. My friends got Red Velvet and Peppermint; I got Lemon Drop (pictured above; it was glorious and I crave it constantly!) and PB&J for my parents.
After saying goodbye to Kat, we had my dad drive us to New Intramuros to say hi to Nikki before heading home. I wish it hadn't been raining; then maybe we could have gone trick-or-treating.
I'm so thankful to Camille, Alfie, Kat, Nikki and everyone else (especially the Fates, haha!) for making my day extra-special. Now I sort of don't feel so bad about being older than Bennett Cooper anymore. (More on that later, as always!)
