Sonny Singh - Sage Warrior

This album was created alongside Valarie Kaur’s book "Sage Warrior." Each track corresponds to a chapter in the book for a multisensory experience of ancestral wisdom and revolutionary love. Visit sagewarrior.us to get the book and to learn more. The lyrics in this album are sacred poems from the Sikh tradition. These shabads, devotional song-prayers, were written by Sikh Gurus as well as sage-poets such as Kabir and Ravidas. They originated in the 15th to 18th centuries in South Asia. In the description of each track, you will find transliterated lyrics along with English translations by Valarie Kaur, Nirinjan Kaur Khalsa, Jasvir Kaur Rababan, and Dolly Kaur Brar. Day #107: Today I Listened to ‘Aisee Preet’ by Sonny Singh. This really got my head bobbing. Bhangra brass bands: who knew it was a thing? A lot of people, probably. I like the syncopated tabla beat. I’ve never really liked the sound of tabla – something about the deep wobbly ‘boing’ makes me feel queasy – but I can’t deny that SS uses it excellently.

The half-time stadium-rock drums are a bit much, by the producer holds back on reverb so it doesn’t sound like it’s trying to be too ‘epic’, thereby narrowly side-stepping cringe. And the breakdown’s really cool. I’d love to see this live.

While on the one hand we learn through Sikhi that all people are equal regardless of their race, caste, or gender, we simultaneously learn that we should not socialize with black people and certainly not date them. We learn they are not to be trusted, that we should keep our distance. We learn that they are unattractive and that we most certainly want to keep our (brown) skin as wheatish and fair and lovely as possible or else we might be called kala (which my Nana Ji used to jokingly call me, as I was the darkest in my family).
