IT’S NOT PARANOIA IF THEY’RE REALLY OUT TO GET YOU

The idea of a road trip never would have crossed Loki’s mind had McCree not suggested it. Loki wasn’t allowed to drive, you see. Why would a creature like himself go on a road trip if he couldn’t even drive? Well, the situation was much different when Jesse proposed the idea to him, that stupidly charming grin on his face and that adorable look in his eyes. Loki jumped at the opportunity to spend quality alone time with his... boyfriend?--and any excuse to temporarily run from his duties as King, to take a much needed vacation, was readily used.
Much to Keir’s own relief, McCree was well aware he’d be the only one driving. Loki may have whispered “I can drive a few times, if need be” to him, but there was little hope within him that the offer would be taken. Not that he was a bad driver, he was just... fast. And a little aggressive. (”Insane! This isn’t GTA!” Keir would yell).
The day they left it was blustery, swollen clouds threatening rain, which wasn’t an uncommon event in Washington especially where they were located. Loki often visited various cities across the country during his off time, if not for the change of scenery then for the experience of observing how humans acted in each place, witnessing their different habits and quirks molded from the place they lived in. Now, the idea of being able to see what rested between each city--the lonesome plains, long stretches of highway seemingly going nowhere, even the rest stops--actually excited him. It would be a whole new experience for him and one he could share with the man he cared for the most.
After packing--mostly clothes, maybe a book or two--and shoving suitcases into the trunk of their vehicle, Loki slipped into the passengers side. The seat was adjusted to accommodate his long legs, and the moment he was settled, he curiously began to pilfer the glove compartment. Of course, car manuals were only so fascinating, but given the excitement bubbling in his stomach, the booklet was more fascinating to him than normal.
“Do we have a set destination?” He’d never thought to ask, but he did once Jesse was himself settled in the driver’s seat, malachite eyes lit up in his enthusiasm turning to look at him. There was a tenderness paired there in his expression as he studied Jesse’s roughened cowboy features, the corner of his mouth twitching into a smile. “People talk about how mysterious and otherworldly rest stops are. I think I wanna find out for myself if that’s true.” Road trips generally had an end point, unless the people in question were driving to drive, and while Loki had no preference for either, he figured he’d ask anyhow. Of course, small tourist-y attractions along the side of the road were enough for him. Wasn’t there a giant ball of string or something out there? Something ridiculous that Loki figured he’d very much like to have a picture with.
