With its striking colour, small size and hairy edge it is no surprise that this fungus has the cute name; Eyelash button (Scutellinia sp.). It is a cup fungus. While walking the dogs on Friday at my usual fungus fossicking forest these small dots of orange caught my attention. No bigger than a few millimetres across, under thick low growing ferns, and developing on rotten wood it was completely by chance that I saw them. I have spent so much time looking for mushrooms and other fungi over last autumn and winter that it has become a habit to keep an eye out. But even then, spotting these specimens was a stretch. I came back today with my camera and macro lens in hand and tried my hand at focus stacking. This photo is made up of 14 frames stacked to bring as much detail out as possible.
