The morning begins like any other.
Sunlight filters softly through the curtains, spilling over the quiet bedroom where y/n is still half-asleep, tangled in white sheets and warmth.
Kang Soo-ha is already awake beside her, propped slightly on one elbow, watching her the way he always does—like she is something fragile, something precious he is terrified of disturbing.
It still amazes him, sometimes, that she is his wife now.
Her first birthday after marriage.
He leans down, presses a kiss to her forehead—slow, lingering—then another to her hair.
“Happy birthday.” he whispers, voice low and warm, meant only for her.
She hums sleepily, smiling before her eyes even open. “You’re leaving early.” she murmurs, already knowing.
“I’ll be back before you know it.” he says gently, brushing a thumb over her cheek. “Be good today.”
She laughs softly. “I’m always good.”
He smiles at that, amused, fond, then reluctantly pulls away to get ready for school.
Before he leaves, he pauses at the door, glancing back at her curled in bed.
“Don’t open the door for anyone except deliveries.” he adds casually.
She squints at him. “Deliveries?”
He only smiles—mysterious, soft—and leaves.
---
The first knock comes an hour later.
A bouquet of pale pink roses, wrapped delicately, with a small card tucked between the petals.
To my favorite person. —S
Her heart stutters.
Before she can even finish arranging the flowers in a vase, another knock follows. Then another.
By noon, the house smells like florals and sugar and chocolate—fresh lilies, sunflowers, her favorite pastries from the bakery she once mentioned once, imported chocolates she never buys for herself.
Each delivery comes with a note.
Small. Thoughtful. Intimate.
Thinking of you.
Did you smile yet?
Wait for me.
By the time the last box arrives—a silk scarf in her favorite shade—she’s overwhelmed, sitting on the couch surrounded by proof that he has thought about her every minute of the day.
---
When Soo-ha finally returns from school, he finds her standing in the living room, arms crossed, pretending to look stern.
“You’re excessive.” she says, lips twitching.
He sets his bag down, walks straight to her, cups her face with both hands.
“You deserve excessive.”
Then he kisses her—slow, sweet, unhurried—like there is nowhere else he needs to be.
---
The shopping trip is chaos in the best way.
She touches something—he buys it.
She hesitates—he insists.
She laughs, scolds him, tries to stop him—he only smiles and hands his card over again.
“Teacher Kang.” she teases, holding up yet another bag. “Are you trying to bankrupt yourself?”
“For you?” he says simply. “Happily.”
He carries everything, refuses to let her lift a single thing, fingers always brushing hers as if grounding himself.
---
By the time they return home, the sun is setting.
She steps inside first.
And freezes.
The living room is transformed—soft fairy lights draped along the walls, candles glowing warmly, rose petals scattered carefully across the floor. A small cake waits on the table, handwritten lettering slightly uneven but perfect.
Happy Birthday, My Love.
She turns slowly, breath caught.
Soo-ha stands behind her, suddenly shy, hands clasped together.
“I wanted it to feel… quiet,” he says softly. “Just us.”
She doesn’t say anything. She just turns and throws her arms around him, burying her face in his chest.
He exhales, arms wrapping around her instantly, holding her like he’s been waiting all day for this exact moment.
They eat cake together on the floor.
He lights the candles again just to watch her blow them out.
They sway slowly to music only they can hear, her head resting against his shoulder.
---
Later, when the night is calm and the world feels far away, they lie together in bed, wrapped in sheets and warmth and each other.
“Thank you.” she whispers, tracing the lines of his face. “For today. For everything.”
He presses a kiss to her knuckles, then her lips.
“Thank you for being born.” he murmurs. “And for choosing me.”
She smiles, eyes soft. “I’ll choose you every time.”
He pulls her closer, forehead resting against hers.
“So will I. Always.”
Outside, the city hums quietly.
Inside, wrapped in love and light, her first birthday as his wife ends exactly the way it should—with him.
