some stuff i read and watched in august:
mad men: still slightly at a loss wrt an ongoing watch project (it's so nice not to have to think about what to stick on during my lunch break etc) since finishing this rewatch but i had so much fun. peggy really a character and face of all time 2 me (peggy/stan forever), still in awe of the magic trick they pulled off pivoting pete to comedy after All That etc. cried a bunch through the finale obvs!
the seventh seal: sometimes you get around to ticking off a classic film and you have to go oh it is actually revelatory, cool cool cool
bridget jones: mad about the boy: oh god i cried so much (like from the first scene where daniel is being so kind to her and the kids and then basically throughout), i love you bridget. i think the first bridget jones was maybe the first 15 cert i ever snuck into at the pictures and now here we are
persuasion (1995): still perfect thx. god ciarán hinds is so hot
persuasion (2022): for some reason i thought this might not be as bad on rewatch but it still sucks lol. baffling how cosmo jarvis can be so fun in shōgun and so blah in this
manhunter: they finally put this on bfi streaming and i leapt on it, michael mann doing michael mann things, absolutely gorgeously shot (the colours!!), brian cox a very fun hannibal (when he's on the phone in his cell with his feet up the wall! okay!!)
broadcast news: holly hunter 4eva, i simply love a film full of yappers, the albert brooks line about wishing she were two people is an all-timer
kpop demon hunters: i have had golden stuck in my head for a good two weeks
witness: got influenced by the rewatchables into a rewatch, god it's good, a masterpiece of Longing, harrison ford unspeakably hot, my sign to finally reread a forbidden rumpsringa etc
thirteen lives: i was going to rewatch apollo 13 but tried this instead and i found it really really moving! lovely understanded performances from colin and viggo and joel and also a benjamin wallfisch score is just cheating emotionally speaking
dorothy dunnett, scales of gold & the unicorn hunt: i am aiming to finish niccolo by the end of the year and that feels doable! scales of gold absolutely killer back half and then the unicorn hunt probably my fave of the series since the first one due to the incredible levels of marital derangement. as ever i love to turn nicholas and lymond around in my head with wolf hall thomas cromwell and am amusing myself by picturing wout van aert from cycling as nicholas - not for like narrative reasons but bc flemish and great at suffering
jane austen, persuasion: still perfect thx
alexandra vasti, earl crush: fun! i've enjoyed both books in this series so i'm cautiously optimistic about her forthcoming f/f - for whatever reason i struggle to find much historical f/f that's like fun and well-written and actually hot so fingers crossed
