Sophronius, my sweet sweet wizard
Wood slats from the Holy Crib are encased in a reliquary and are on display at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
In the 640s, Sophronius, the patriarch of Jerusalem, sent several unassuming wooden slats to Rome for safekeeping after the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem. Sophronius asked Pope Theodore I to protect the pieces of wood, which he said were the remains of the Holy Crib — Jesus' manger.
Today, five pieces of wood from the manger are preserved in a gold, silver and glass reliquary in a crypt chapel in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The reliquary was commissioned by Pope Pius IX in 1802, when it replaced an older urn that was stolen by Napoleon's troops in the late 1700s. (The troops left the wood behind in the basilica.)
Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Sermon
The Mother of God, the most pure Virgin, carried the true light in her arms and brought him to those who lay in darkness. We too should carry a light for all to see and reflect the radiance of the true light as we hasten to meet him.
The light has come and has shone upon a world enveloped in shadows; the Dayspring from on high has visited us and given light to those who lived in darkness. This, then, is our feast, and we join in procession with lighted candles to reveal the light that has shone upon us and the glory that is yet to come to us through him. So let us hasten all together to meet our God.
The true light has come, the light that enlightens every man who is born into this world. Let all of us, brethren, be enlightened and made radiant by this light. Let all of us share in its splendor, and be so filled with it that no one remains in the darkness. Let us be shining ourselves as we go together to meet and to receive with the aged Simeon the light whose brilliance is eternal.
- Saint Sophronius
O Mary, if the Holy One born of your womb is really incarnate, then you, must truly be called the Mother of God. For you have, in absolute truth, brought forth God!
St Sophronius
