i. ( ‘ he won’t notice you’re h e r e . ‘ ) you see the look in his eyes and the hesitation to continue the conversation almost as if he had never said something to begin with. his eyes glaze over, and he thinks about the man he thought he knew before god had taken another blonde angel into his arms. never once did he know that this sacrifice had protected her from the worst, and now he was living out a nightmare on earth. he looks into your eyes, and you see the same sadness that you had seen for years escalate throughout his body. maybe it was the history, or the reoccurring moments that came to your head in that moment, but something about it felt too personal to touch.
ii. ( ‘ have you ever thought about running a w a y ? ‘ ) he’s looking up at the ceiling now, worrying about whether or not you’ll call him crazy for even considering the possibility. you nod slowly, and although he couldn’t see your response he still put on a weak smile and continued his gaze as if he could see right through the poorly done paint job and right into the galaxy full of lost stars. he had never considering himself to be one of them until now.
iii. ( ‘ please don’t l e a v e . ‘ ) when he says this, you are confused. mostly, you reassure him that you weren’t planning to go anywhere, but something clicks and you suddenly know his true meaning. he looks at you with a palm reached out in a promise, and you take it because that’s what best friends do. you hold each other’s lives to your chests and you wish to one day be free of the blood you didn’t agree on being your responsibility. he tells you he sees blonde, choppy hair in his nightmares, and you tell him to let her go. neither of you have never known security from anyone else.
iv. ( ‘ you’re my best friend. a l w a y s . ‘ ) he’s half asleep, mumbling along as he’s dazing off into a slumber he wished would come sooner. you lay side by side, but not intertwined, because the blur between platonic and romance was only a little bit distracting when nothing else mattered but the way you cared for each other. his eyes finally closed, and you watched as he muttered his finally words, ones that you had heard a million times before but you had never really l i s t e n e d .
v. ( ‘ i love y o u . ‘ )
