gulf wars drive home truly turning into Something Else but like. at least i’m not alone about it lol
this past weekend was Michaelmas, here in Bryn Gwlad, and my first time camping since gulf wars in march. however, due to Life Circimstances, i am Currently Carless, and thus had to be ferried to site with my camping gear by my dear friend @swordnspirit who i owe my LIFE (i truly have the best friends in the whole world, if they're willing to drive an hour and a half south of the event site to get me when they only live 30 minutes away).
i did not bring my rapier gear due to packing constraints and the knowledge that i would be committing Acts of Service this weekend and therefore would not have time to fight, as I had an entourage shift for Their Excellencies planned in the morning with @hopecarriesasword and a beginning knitting class planned for the afternoon (my first ever!). so there would be no fighting for me this event, but it goes this way sometimes
we set up site on friday, and i was living in the lap of luxury with my sick futon in my tent. i attended the s'mores and bardic circle after wandering about camps and chatting with many of my friends, where i ran into @cwen-northwice and very awkwardly asked her if she was "cwen, from tumblr" and she proceeded to laugh at me. i should've told her i liked her shoelaces and i'm ashamed i didn't tbh
however meeting her was delightful and she's just as lovely in person as she is online, and i'm excited to someday cross swords with her.
i got quite drunk at the bardic circle, as one tends to at camping events, and gallivanted back to my tent to retire for the evening after much merry-making.
the next morning i was thankfully not hungover and managed to get myself up and ready for morning court in a decent time, which is very good, because i was very surprised to be called in! i got recognized for my prowess on the rapier field in bryn gwlad with a cross fleury, the baronial rapier award, and something that i was not expecting in the least.
so that was very exciting! and very ironic, seeing as i wasn't fighting this weekend at all LOL
and then after morning court, nadja and i went and entouraged for their excellencies bryn gwlad, which was quite fun honestly. we went to archery, and then we watched the rapier tavern battle, which was a HOOT and we got to watch fake food get thrown all over, and i got some videos of the fighting. there was jumping on tables and everything LOL
then we wandered over to equestrian, and then back to the chivalric gate battle, and then back to equestrian again. around this time, i was able to get off from my entourage shift, so i wandered off to meet up with some friends to catch up and browse the merchants, where i bought myself a new pouch!
isn't it CUTE? i love it so much, i loooooove the danse macabre. it's very fitting, i think hehe
after lunch and setting up tents back at camp, i had to go off to teach my first class!! i had a great turnout -- a full class! six whole people came and we made really good progress on learning how to knit. we didn't get as far into the pattern i'd chosen as i was hoping, but we did get through all the increases into the body of the pattern, so i think next time i want to teach this particular pattern i should do it as a two-part class over a longer event, when i can do like, 2 two-hour blocks or something.
i do feel like i have a much better idea of how to teach the class and what it will require to teach it effectively, though, and all of my students did so amazing for their first times knitting and i'm really proud of them :,) i will hopefully be teaching more in the future!
after my class ended, i popped back to camp for a little bit, and then we all headed back up to the tavern where court is for evening court and dinner.
much to my surprise, i was called into court again, and this time to receive my sable talon! my first big girl rapier award! it was overdue court business that i was aware of from when i was in the UK, but i didn't know what it was for, and i wasn't sure if i was going to get called in Michaelmas (and i definitely didn't expect it when it happened LOL) but i'm so happy and proud to have recieved it :,) my teachers were very proud of me too
after dinner, i absconded to the ball, where we danced until 1am and hit aaaaalllll the classics. we gigged the whirlies, we korobushka'd, we petit vriens and amaroso'd (both normal and super speed), we rostoboli gioso'd, we bransle suite'd, and much more. we had late night ball shenanigans and everything, it was very fun
overall, michaelmas was a roaring success, even though i didn't get to fight. i hope next year i get to hit the rapier field, but i'm not at all disappointed by how this year went :)
btw i am at 21 days of no SCA and it wears on me
wanted to join the SCA sideblog club, following in the footsteps of @hopecarriesasword
my main is @bog-horse, and hopefully this sideblog will stay primarily SCA-related. ideally will be used for yip yapping about the society, as well as posting about eventing life, projects, rapier journaling, etc etc
