I used to be so in love with these books back in middle school before I could understand why they’re problematic. The fact that they have this white savior bullshit and a non-consensual “romantic” scene is so disappointing :( damnit Tamora

yeah man. like... im so in love with all the tortall books even though a bunch of them have some issues. but like.. the song of the lioness series was written in the 80s so the weird issues it has (which is mostly like the racism/white savior stuff in woman who rides like a man) i can sorta deal with

but the daughter of the lioness duo is wayyy more recent and wayyy more weird racist and creepy in those ways. its so frustrating cause its such a cool concept and its great to have a high fantasy story set in a place that isnt just magic-europe.. but then aly is the worst and her relationship with nawat always felt really uncomfortable to me. like yeah hes supposed to be a crow and so at first hes all about having babies and shit but he literally never really moves on from that and still pesters her about it. and then the sign that hes become more of a ~man and not a crow~ is that he still is really determined to have sex with aly but he’s ok with using birth control?? but then at the end of the book shes literally pregnant and shes supposed to be like... eighteen at the very most? and i wouldnt have an issue with that if it werent for the fact that all through the books aly never really shows that she actually wants to be a mother. like she says that she and nawat can mate once stuff isnt so intense but i think thats the only mention that she would want a kid. and i feel like if youre going to have your character get willfully pregnant at 18 when they already have an intense life then you should probably characterize them as actually wanting to have kids and wanting to be a young mother and start a family. cause tbh even when i first read tricksters queen the fact that she was pregnant at the very end always came off as weird and sorta like... cohesion, i guess. like remember how nawat decided he was going to ignore her because she wouldnt fuck him in the first book?? yeah hes a ~crow~ but just.. stop it tammy ughgh 

and i hate how much aly talks down to all the raka. i get that her characterization is to make her a huge obnoxious shit head but she just comes off so racist. like in the first book when she first enters the household theres a line in the book thats like “if the white people really were oppressing the brown people it wasnt that big of a deal in this household!” where the raka are literally slaves and can be killed for like.. any reason ever and have had all their land and property and ranks stolen from them?? and then whenever the raka show that they hate the white people, for being horrible shitty people and living in and benefiting from a society that brazenly oppresses the natives, aly’s always like “sigh silly raka! how would they ever understand that they had to work with the not-so-bad white people if they were ever going to achieve anythign!!!!”

also i think the phrases “she looked across at him through her eyelashes, the look of a woman who obviously liked what she saw” and “every inch of her the (insert some stupid noun here)” should be banned forever cause i cant stand them
