What's happened between us? What can I give to save us? Being righteous isn't quite enough. What's happened between us? What can I give to save me?
Asking Alexandria - A Single Moment Of Sincerity
“I just wanted…to kiss you good-bye.”
{—☁} There was an agreement in place between Sophie and her dear aunt killjoy that allowed her to visit with Matty, but it was one that left the older of the Hauck women clueless as to what her niece was really doing. In the eyes of Aunt Esme, Sophie returned to her hometown every other weekend to spend the night with her dearest friend Maddie, who had been in the same youth group as her. She spent the weekend with her, and then met up with her aunt in the mall for an afternoon of bonding in town before returning to the nowhere of a city she was forced to relocate to. She knew nothing of a boyfriend, or a late fish, or a puppy, or a whole mock-domestic life she would play out her weekends there, playing house with Matty, and pretending things could stay like this for more than a few days.
Sunday afternoon rolled around as it always had to, and while she may have woke up in a nice place, warm, curled up next to her boyfriend, Sophie was now finishing off her last soft pretzel of freedom, waiting for the quiet three hours of the ride to her aunt’s home. She was growing tired of the long drives, that much was clear, but she would hold her tongue, knowing a complaint could very well land her without a ride at all.
So she sat on her bench and watched for her aunt’s car to drive into the parking lot, from the same street she had just watched Matty leave on. Which would explain her surprise when she was taken off guard by the boy finding a seat next to her, throwing an arm around her shoulders, and pressing a kiss to her mouth, before she could even ask why he came back. But she wouldn’t argue, and instead she simply eased into it, setting her pretzel down to place a hand on his neck.
After a few moments, she paused, pulling away, to raise a brow at him. “Why’re you back here?”
"I just wanted.." he started, before brushing a bit of hair out of her face, "to kiss you goodbye." he informed her.
And while their closeness was becoming a gate way to another kiss, they heard the loud steps and shocked voice of her aunt and they realized they had some explaining to do.

{—☁} She straightened her skirt, but it was in vain, as once she made it to the small dirt hole in the Derringer’s back yard, she found herself settled on the ground, on an old beach towel, for what it mattered. She sat with her knees hugged to her chest, and leaned on Matty, pressing a kiss to his cheek, as if hoping to signal the beginning to the makeshift funeral.
He hummed a solemn tune, and she watched as the crayon box holding their orange friend was dropped into a shallow grave. She paused a moment, before sitting up, and adjusting so that her legs were at her side, and her hands in her lap.
She cleared her throat, and sighed softly before finally speaking. “We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of our lovechild, and only predecessor, Gustav. He was a good fish, he could swim circles, and look confused like no other. Beloved by many as a son, a nephew, a confidant and perhaps even a father, we do him the justice of a ground burial, in hopes that maybe one day in the future, when corpses are being brought to life in a safe, non-zombie way, we could have him in the warmth of his tank again. But, until then, we’ll just have to wait to see you on the other side. Godspeed, Gustav.”
And while their gilled friend would surely be missed, there was some genuine happiness in the way he wrapped an arm around her shoulder, and pulled her close, to which she figured there was a silver lining in an impromptu trip home for a fish funeral.
