What does Soulaani mean? I've seen it means another word for African Americans but I think I've also seen hate for the word and can't tell if it's exclusive to southerners
No worries, anon, I don’t mind. Soulaani is a term for black Americans that are descended from the victims of chattel slavery throughout the USA.
A lot of soulaani come from southern states such as Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc. and are a part of groups such as the Gullah-geechee and creoles, but soulaani isn’t exclusive to them at all. Many soulaani across the USA are from the south via the great migration (a time in history where black families moved to northern, western and eastern states to escape white supremacist groups and find work, my grandparents are from Louisiana and Arkansas but i was born and raised in Michigan, for one thing, but proximity to those states isn’t inherent to being soulaani, is what I’m getting at.) and have deep cultural ties to hoodoo, voodoo and other cultural, traditional and spiritual practices that are a mix of African, Western European and native practices.
here you can read how the coiners of soulaan define it for themselves [link] it’s definitely worth the read, though the term has sort of grown past itself (for the better, imo).
