an ode to one of my favorite trees, victimized by a hurricane (2024)
i like to think this tree, one of my favorites from this park, made a sacrifice so that hurricanes would stay away the next season. and i am grateful that indeed it was a peaceful hurricane season this past year. i have had a relationship with this tree for many years, as it is the first that i remember attempting to climb as a child. in an instant, it was injured beyond recovery, a symbol for the wreckage and permanence of such a catastrophe.
often in life we must uproot; we must learn to come to terms with the carnage that this sudden change deposits into our lives. even when we see the transition coming and know that it is a possibility, we may not expect the outcome we get. these events can provide a useful opportunity to recalibrate and to create the change that we seek. when you see the things that typically linger below the surface, there lies a chance to connect with a beauty you didn’t know awaited you. none of this, however, can happen before grieving the loss and making peace. in my experience, the mourning comes in waves.
