Geisha Girl Playing a Record Ca.1915-1925 Studio view of a Geisha with portable record player. It’s impossible to see here, but under a magnifying glass, the name NIPPONOPHONE is on the record envelope. And that leads us to an amazing reproduction of their old catalog on line (which even utilizes a very old 1890s image of Geisha making music, and pictures that show and name the possible player model she is listening to). Then, to some Wikipedia entries that tell us who made the first DISC records, and a very INTERESTING, and sometimes CONFUSING account of Japan’s first Record company —- whose goods appear in the photo above! — and the international mergers and name changes over the years.
