Broken Arts had started with a series of art jams but they never drew anyone out. Harley wanted to give up on Broken Arts altogether but Mike mentioned that his buddy Craig had just opened a bar and they were going to do live music there so we decided to try our hand at putting on a concert. Harley heard Ottawa singer-songwriter Andrew Vincent on CBC Radio-3, loved him, and e-mailed his manager. Toronto surf duo Tonkapuma were old friends of Harley's from his time interning at a record label and said they'd play. Harley and Mike discovered Port Perry's Avery Island at The Shwaltz in Memorial Park a month earlier. Craig added his friend's band Cedar to the bill but they dropped out at the last minute. Then we got an e-mail from Peterborough singer-songwriter The Oldest Child who asked if he could play.
The theme was autumn and we hung up orange balloons and streamers. A friend of Natalie's brought paintings of cupcakes and a friend of Avery Island's brought some framed black and white photos. The Durham Comics Guild, Toronto Zine Library, and Oshawa Spoken Word Collective tabled. Attendance was far above expectations and multiple people told us how cool it was to do a show that mixed different genres of music and art and print. It was like Oshawa had been waiting for something more.
