Soundtracked 26: Something New
2012 marked our second annual St. Patrick's Day showcase. After the success of Soundtracked 12 one year earlier we decided to do another all-ages show on March 17 with four new bands that had never played a Broken Arts event before. Erin had curated an art show for our fourth Broken Arts Fair two weeks earlier so we decided to re-display those pieces and set about finding some new acts.

Golden Gun were mysterious. The Oshawa duo told us they had been playing together for years but they had nothing recorded, no Internet presence, and this would be their debut show. Singer and guitarist Darrin Andringa had been following Broken Arts from day one, though, so we were happy to have them. Death & The Ninth Day were a younger math rock band from Whitby that wound up being so loud you could hear them two blocks away. Illitry were an electronic duo from Hamilton who had come to our attention and Army Girls were a Toronto guitar and drums duo that Harley had seen play a Daps All-Ages show years earlier. Both acts were on the cusp of success at the time, Illitry gaining a much bigger following over the next year and Army Girls ending with frontwoman Carmen forming the much-lauded band Diana.
30 people paid at the door and 29.7 was statistically average at the time so, even though we were down from the last few shows, we felt good. Unfortunately a miscommunication between the café staff had the girl working the show thinking we'd be done hours earlier than we were actually scheduled. Her urging us to wrap up as quickly as possible coupled with a long setup time for all of Illitry's complicated gear led to our having to cut Army Girls' set short, something which tremendously disappointed us and insulted them. We came off like unorganized amateurs in the face of this popular band and it left a sour taste on the night. That would be erased, though. Our next show was heading out of the café setting and bringing us the biggest crowd we had ever had.
