Soundtracked 42: Masquerade
For our first event of 2013 we decided to hold another costume-themed show. Cassy had been wanting to do a masquerade for a while and it seemed like a fun way to start the new year. We had been fans of Kat Burns since her days in Forest City Lovers and asked the former Whitby native to headline with her new solo project Kashka. The Louder Sounds were an Oshawa band we found through Facebook and booked without having heard a single note while John had found West Hammock through a mutual SASS connection. The event also featured the award presentations for the 2012 Broken Arts Music Awards with Dan Reiff accepting the Artist Of The Year award on behalf of The Micronite Filters.
Soundtracked 42: Masquerade January 11, 2013 @ Wasted Space live: West Hammock The Louder Sounds Kashka with: the 2012 Broken Arts Music Award presentations Broken Arts lineup: Harley, Cassy, John, Kathleen, Kat
Attendance was statistically average and the creativity of everyone's masks should have made for a good night but the show wound up taking a backseat to tension among the team. What should have been a minor disagreement between Harley and Cassy escalated in an unforeseeable manner with Kat, John, and Kathleen caught in the middle. Seemingly out of nowhere things fractured. Harley had gone into the night knowing that he was going to be announcing his retirement from Broken Arts by the end of the year. What we didn't know was that Cassy would wind up leaving the team by the time January was over. It was a chaotic start to the year and the three junior members of Broken Arts were left wondering if there was any future for the group they had just joined four months earlier.
