Just Keep Swimming

In the movie “Finding Nemo” Dory sings a little song where she is encouraging Nemo’s father to keep going even though he’s discouraged. This small scene is important because he really wants to give up but with Dory’s support to keep trying this eventually allows him to find his son. Thus it’s essential that even when life gets tough you give it everything you’ve got and don’t give up. This is a wonderful theme to inspire a dance, and I would select “Carry On” by Fun as the song. I believe this song would be appropriate for an interesting lyrical piece. I imagine having five dancers in this routine and one of them would be struggling and the other four dancers would be there to support them. I would have the struggling dancer begin on stage all alone with the lights low so they appear as a silhouette. I would have them pace around the stage in the introduction of the song. They would then look all around the empty stage in the first line in the music and then reacting in a negative way when they realize they are all alone. In the second line I would have one dancer come out and grab the struggling dancers arms and help them. Then they would struggle again and each time a new dancer would come out and help catch them or something. When the carry on part of the song or the chorus when the music builds up I picture them doing big jumps all together in a line of three in the front and two in the back and the struggling dancer in the middle. I picture them doing a big lift where they carry the dancer around the stage and gently put them down. The ending all five of the dancers would go off together smiling and that represents how even when you’re struggling you have support and you should carry on. I believe a suiting costume could be to have the struggling person in say a purple skirt and then the other four could wear blue skirts. They could all match but the struggling person can be designated. It would be ideal to have something that the four dancers could give to the one dancer in the end to represent how she’s with them. Maybe they could all be wearing head bands and one of the dancers could remove her own head band and offer it to the dancer in purple.
