Lily smiled as a firm movement woke her, her hand fishing underneath the mess of blankets to her belly and felt it again, against her palm. She laid there for a few moments, enjoying the feeling, before rolling onto her back and searching for Sy's hand, pressing it against her stomach.
“Sy.” She whispered softly to him, rubbing noses with him and smiling at his sleepy grunt. “Austin.” She hummed, grinning at him, and kissing his forehead.
“Wake up, sleepy head.”
“Hm.” Sy moaned back, eyes fluttering behind his closed eyelids, his fingers flexing on her stomach, unconsciously feeling what she had felt.
“Someone wants to meet you.” She chuckled at him, brushing her fingers through his hair.
Sy's brow creased for a moment, then his eyes opened, his pupils taking a moment to focus on her. “Who?” He rasped in a sleepy voice.
Lily nudged her round belly against his palm. “Your daughter, silly Bear.” She giggled at him.
He blinked at her several times, before his hand and his brain registered what was happening and an ear splitting grin came over his face, feeling the baby move against his palm. “That's our little one.” He cooed, excitedly.
“That's her.” Lily nodded, resting her forehead against his. “She's active, just like her Daddy.”
“But spunky, like her Mama.” Sy chuckled back, kissing the tip of her nose. “Man, feel that kick! That's a field goal, if I ever felt one!” He grinned, his face beaming like the proud papa that he is.
“Feels like several from this side.” Lily chuckled, snuggling in closer to him. “I know you've been waiting weeks to be able to feel her move.” She said softly, as he sat up, pulling the blankets away from her stomach to press his lips against it.
“So long.” He agreed, smiling as he felt the movement against his lips. “I've known she's in there, from the doctor's appointments and watching your belly grow. But being able to feel her movement inside of you, concretes the reality of her to me.” He whispered, as if he was only talking to the baby and not Lily.
“If that makes any sense?” He added, glancing at Lily from the corner of his blue eyes.
“It does.” Lily nodded, gently carding her fingers through the curls at the back of his head. “It was sorta the same, when I felt that first little flutter in my stomach.”
“What did that feel like?” Sy asked, shifting to lay on his belly, and caressed the line on the underside of her plump tummy.
Lily pressed her lips together, her brows knitting together as she tried to find a way to describe it to him. “It was sorta like, there was a gold fish in my stomach, just teeny movements, like the flutter of their fins moving, before going still for a little while.” She explained to him, the best she could.
“What's her moving around feel like now?”
“Almost what I imagine it felt like was happening before that creature popped out of John Hurt, in Alien.” She giggled at him, grinning.
Sy laughed, laying his cheek against her stomach. “That's a lively explanation.” He smiled at her.
“It's the best one I have.” Lily chuckled back at him, laying a hand on his hand and the other on the underside of her belly, enjoying the warmth of Sy's cheek and the strong kicks of the baby, nothing could make for a more perfect morning.
After laying in bed for a little while longer, with some soft love making, the two of them rose, taking a warm shower together, before Sy went about finishing off the nursery and Lily sat in her office, getting a bit of work done on the computer. It was around lunchtime that Sy slid in behind her, resting his bearded chin on her shoulder as she made them lunch, gently swaying side to side with her, making her chuckle.
“Is my Captain in a good mood?” Lily asked, turning her head to kiss his temple.
“He is.” Sy replied, returning her affection. “I finished the baby's room.” He informed her, proudly.
“Oh, did you?” She inquired, turning away from the counter. “Is it up to Army regulation?”
“My good lady, everything I do is up to Army regulation.” Sy answered, looking almost offended by the accusation. “But, one thing.”
“And what would that be?”
Sy licked his lips and held her tighter. “How I love my woman.” He smirked, his blue eyes sparkling.
“No one can regulate the beast in the sheets.” Lily laughed, quoting another of the lines Sy had told her, during their rounds of love making.
“You know it.” He purred, wiggling his eyebrows at her. “Now, why don't you take a small break, and come see the nursery.”
“Is that an order?”
“It is.”
“All right then.” Lily chuckled, kissing him gently.
Sy took Lily's hand and guided her upstairs to the second floor, then down the hall to the room that had once been his, when he first came to the property, but was now the room of pride for their little girl. He made Lily close her eyes and opened the door, before leading her into the middle of the room, letting her feel the soft and shaggy rug rolled out over the floor, under her bare feet.
“Open your eyes, Angel.” He cooed, biting his lip with excitement.
Lily opened her eyes and a small gasp past her lips, seeing the light purple walls in the sun filled room. “Oh gosh, Austin.” She cooed, pressing a hand to her chest and turning in a slow circle, seeing the changing table and rocking chair put together and in their places, the matching purple rug underfoot and pictures of animals and Lily and Sy on the walls.
She noticed something by the crib, covered with a sheet. “What's that?” She asked, pointing to it.
“I had lumber over, from repairing the porch. So, I made something with it, for the baby.” Sy explained, stepping towards the covered object and yanked the sheet off, showing a small, hanging cradle with a stained finish.
“You made this from scratch?” Lily asked, surprised, even though she knew better, as she went to admire his craftsmanship. “It's so beautiful, Austin.” She told him, running her fingers along it and giving a gentle push. “You've outdone yourself!” She gushed, straightening up and grinning at him, overcome by emotion.
Sy smiled at her. “I thought we could keep it in our room, when she sleeps with us.” He explained his reasoning.
“I think it's an amazing idea.” She nodded, leaning forward to kiss his cheek. “She'll love it, just like her papa.” She grinned, proud of him.
Lily groaned, shifting in bed as her lower back throbbed, before getting up, not wanting to bother Sy as he grunted in his sleep. Lily rubbed at her back as she went downstairs, Aika on her heels as she went, hoping a change in position and stretching her back some, while getting a glass of water, would help with the soreness. Her pronounced belly rubbed against the kitchen counter as she leaned towards the sink, filling a glass from the faucet.
“Oh, little girl, could you be like your mama for a moment and calm down.” She begged the stirring life inside of her, patting her stomach as she downed some of her water. “Oh okay, I'm sorry.” Lily groaned, as a sharp pain shot through her. “Christ on a rubber shingle.” She cursed, setting her glass on the counter and gripped the edge of the sink, leaning over as the pain clamped down for a long moment, before relaxing.
“All right.” Lily sighed, figuring she was just having a cause of Braxton Hicks and knowing the likelihood of finding sleep with them, she wandered into the living room and lowered herself down onto the couch, where her laptop was sitting on the coffee table, and powered it on, deciding to try and get some work done, while they ran their course.
But, three hours later, the Hicks didn't go away, they only got stronger and closer together. Aika whined as she laid curled up beside Lily on the couch, sensing Lily's discomfort and pain. Lily patted her on the head and set her laptop on the coffee table, shuffling back into the kitchen to refill her glass and drank it down, trying to calm her nerves.
“Right, right.” Lily nodded, taking slow and deep breaths, before pushing herself off the sink and crawled back up the stairs to the master bedroom. “Austin.” She called out, kneeling against the edge of the bed, and pressing her forehead to the cool blankets for a moment. “Austin Wyatt Syverson, if you don't wake up this instant, I'm going to scream.” She said loudly, while tugging on his foot.
“What, what!” Sy cried out, jerking upright and flaying sightly, startled. “Angel?” He panted, spotting her at the bottom of the bed. “Jesus Christ, what is it?” He panicked, flinging blankets back and rushing over to her, resting his hands on her back and hips.
“It's D-Day, Captain.” She groaned, breathing heavily.
“But, it's not supposed to be D-Day for another...” Sy jerked his head towards the calendar behind him. “Month.”
“She doesn't care and nor do I, Austin.” Lily snapped, biting her lip as more pain flowed through her.
“Right.” Sy nodded, rushing to pull on some clothing. “Here, let me help you put something light on, it's cold out.” He said, taking her hand and helped her up to her feet and sit on the bed, then helped her into a pair of pajama bottoms and one of his black Lynyrd Skynyrd, followed by a pair of socks and her slippers. “All right, Aika, we'll be back, hopefully with your little sister!” He said, as he helped her back downstairs, then out to the car.
“Here, Angel, squeeze as hard as you need too.” Sy told her, offering Lily his hand as he drove down the dark road towards the hospital.
“Thanks.” Lily sighed, grabbing his hand and held onto it for dear life, hugging it to her chest.
Sy helped Lily out of the car and waddle across the parking lot to the Emergency Room doors, having a flashback of the last time he had taken her to the ER, when she had overdosed on a bottle of pills, in an attempt to get away from her abusive ex-boyfriend. He had almost lost Lily that day, and now, he was taking her into the same ER to potentially deliver their daughter, a new life, a contrast of day and night.
“Can I--” The nurse at the station started to ask, but cut herself off, seeing the state Lily was in. “Oh, I see we're having a baby.” She smiled at the two of them.
“Yeah.” Lily replied with a huffy laugh, leaning against Sy. “Oh, very much.” She whimpered as another contraction washed over her.
“How long between the contractions?” She asked, grabbing a wheelchair.
“About four and a half minutes.” Sy answered, grabbing both of Lily's hands and helped ease her into the wheelchair. “They last little more than two minutes, but less than a minute and a half.” He added, having kept track of them on his phone, on the way over in the car.
“Excellent, you're a very attentive Daddy.” The nurse praised Sy, as she wheeled Lily to a small room behind the check-in desk.
“That's my Captain, Military precision.” Lily chuckled, looking up at Sy with pride, even when she was in pain.
“Looks like you're in good hands, then.” The nurse grinned at both of them.
“The best.” She nodded, before another contraction hit her.
The nurse put a pressure cuff around Lily's upper arm and took several of her other vitals, trying to be as careful and gentle as she could in the process, knowing she was already uncomfortable, and didn't want to add onto it, before handing a clipboard of paperwork for Sy to fill out, which he found a lot easier to do this time around.
“All right, I've contacted the maternity ward and they have a nurse coming down to receive you.” The nurse informed Lily and Sy. “They'll take you both up to a private room there, where you'll be more comfortable to have your little one.”
“Thank you so much.” Sy nodded, smiling at her.
“You're welcome and congratulations.” She smiled back at him, before going back to her station.
“Can I do anything for you, Angel?” Sy asked, kneeling down in front of her.
“No.” She shook her head, leaning forward to press her damp forehead to his. “You just being here with me is enough, Bear.” She whispered to him, looking him in the eyes.
“Well, if you need more, I'm at your command.” Sy said, gently rubbing her tense sides. “As always.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Syverson?” A voice called from the door.
Sy pulled away from Lily. “Yes.” He replied, finding a young female nurse.
“I'm here to take you to the Maternity ward.” She informed the two of them.
“Excellent.” Sy nodded at her.
Nodding her head, the nurse stepped behind Lily's wheelchair and pushed her out into the hallway, acknowledging the station nurse that had admitted Lily, before wheeling her down the hall to a set of elevators and pressed one of the many buttons on it. After a short wait, the lift doors dinged and rolled open, allowing the nurse to push Lily onto it and Sy to follow suit.
“New parents?” The nurse asked, to make small talk.
“Yeah.” Sy smiled at her, giddy and nervous. “Our first.”
“New implies first Bear.” Lily laughed, looking up at him, amused.
“I knew that.” He answered, grinning down at her, shyly, making her laugh more.
“Lord, I love it, when you get nervous.” She teased him, reaching out for his hand.
“Silly butt.” Sy chuckled, giving her his hand and brought hers to his lips, kissing her fingers.
The elevator jerked and came to a stop, announcing its arrival to the Maternity ward, and the doors opened, allowing the nurse to push Lily out into the hall and down to her room, Sy close at her heels. With Lily finally in her room, a few more nurses came scurrying in, helping her into a hospital gown and into bed, before hooking her up to an IV with fluids and several other machines.
“Your OBGYN has been contacted and she's on her way.” The head nurse informed Lily and Sy.
“Okay, thank you.” Lily nodded, settling into her bed.
Sy set down the baby bag he'd been carrying around since getting ready to go to the hospital, then sat on the edge of the bed with Lily, taking one of her hands between both of his, and massaged it. “You're doing great, Angel. I'm proud of you.” He told her, kissing her knuckles.
“Thanks, Bear.” She replied, just as another contraction washed over her, making her hiss in pain.
Sy squeezed her hand and rubbed her leg, trying to offer her all the loving support he could through it, while not knowing how much she wanted to be touched. “You're doing so good, Angel. Just breathe.” He whispered, once he noticed the pain had lessened
“Do you want anything? Water or something?”
Lily took a moment to gather herself, before answering Sy. “Ice, maybe.” She sighed, pressing her palm to her warm and sweaty forehead.
“Okay, I can do that.” He nodded, feeling useful for the moment, leaning forward to kiss her flushed cheek. “I'll be right back.” He promised, raising to his feet and going down the hallway to the nurse's station. “Is it possible for her to have any ice?” He asked, looking down at the nurse behind the desk.
“Yeah, of course.” She nodded at Sy, getting up from her chair and disappearing into a little room behind the station for a few moments, before coming out with a large, clear cup of pebble-shaped ice and a plastic wrapped spoon.
“There you go.”
“Thank you so much.” Sy smiled at her, taking them with a nod of his head, then returned to their room. “Here, Angel.” He grinned, setting the cup of ice on a rolling tray to open the plastic spoon, then stuck it in.
“Thanks, Bear.” Lily replied, picking up a spoonful and depositing it into her mouth, chewing away. “I think we might be here a bit.” She commented, rubbing her stiff belly with her free hand.
“That's all right, as long as the two of you are sound and safe.” Sy replied, sitting beside her and resting his hand on leg, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “I remember reading that first time labors can take a really long time anyways. So, I came prepared.”
Lily laughed, grinning at him. “Oh, did you?” She asked, amused.
“Yes, ma'am.” Sy nodded at her, proudly, standing up and moving over to the baby bag. “I brought my iPad, and I have it loaded with a couple of our favorite movies and I downloaded that show you started watching.” He said, holding up the black device, before setting it down on the small built-in couch. “I packed your book and some cards, so we could play a game.”
Lily stared at Sy's back as he kept pulling things out of the lavender colored bag, touched and enchanted by her Bear pulling out all the stops for her.
“Oh!” Sy exclaimed, finding something in the bag he had forgotten about. “I also packed this.” He said, turning around to show Lily, a white bottle of Coconut oil and Peach scented massage lotion. “If you want a massage.” He grinned, proud of himself.
“However, did I find such an amazingly thoughtful man?” Lily asked, smirking at him.
“You put an ad in the paper.” Sy grinned back at her.
Lily snorted. “Captain Smartass strikes again!”
“At your service, ma'am.” Sy replied, saluting her with all the seriousness as if he was saluting a commanding officer.
Lily started to laugh at him, but was cut off with a sharp hiss, her back tensing as she pressed her hand to rock hard belly. Sy bit his lip, before opening the bottle of lotion and squeezing some of the thick and fragrant substance onto his fingers. Stepping up beside the hospital bed, he carefully slipped his hands inside her loosely tied gown and methodically started to rub up and down her back, helping her relax.
“Deep breathes, Angel.” He cooed at her, kissing the back of her neck. “Just like in our classes.” He encouraged her, drawing a deep breath in.
Pushing back against Sy's palms, Lily took a deep breath and slowly let it out again, then took another and another, until the pain and the contraction faded away and she could breathe normally again. “Thanks, Bear.” She sighed, dropping her head forward and closing her eyes, focusing on the feeling of his hot hands on her skin.
“It's what I'm here for.” Sy replied, kissing the back of her head. “We're a team, Angel.” He said, kneading up her back to her shoulders.
“The best team.” She whispered, moaning at the amazing feel of his hands.
A few minutes later, a gentle knock roused Sy and Lily from their quiet bubble, as Dr. Evers walked in, grinning at the two of them.
“How are you doing, Mama?” Dr. Evers asked, standing on the opposite side of the bed from Sy.
“Like I have this Bear of a man's child tearing out of my body.” Lily replied, an amused smile lingering on her tired face.
“Hey, now.” Sy replied, his voice lined with a fun-loving warning.
Lily looked up at him. “I'm pushing that head.” She pointed up at him. “Out from between my legs.”
Dr. Evers chuckled, despite trying to remain professional. “I see you're in good spirits.” She grinned, turning away to wash her hands and pull on a pair of gloves. “Let's check and see how dilated you are, Mrs. Lily.” The doctor said, taking a seat on the bed near Lily's feet and gently folded back the edge of her gown, before slipping her gloved hand beneath it.
“Just relax and breathe.”
Nodding and gulping, Lily took a deep breath, feeling the tips of the latex gloves brush her sore nether regions, and hissed, but managed not to tense by gripping Sy's hand. Dr. Evers gave her an apologetic look, before refocusing on her task and a moment later, removed her hand.
“You're almost four centimeters dilated.” She said, standing up and pulled off her gloves, tossing them in the bin. “So you're just in the door of the Active Phase of Labor.” She told them, smiling. “Once you reach ten centimeters, you'll begin the Transition phase and your baby girl will join you in the world!”
“I can't wait to meet her.” Sy said, grinning like a madman.
“Neither can I.” Lily agreed, hugging his arm.
“I'll see you guys in a bit, you just rest and if you need anything, hit the call button.” Dr. Evers explained, before excusing herself from the room.
“Just a little bit longer, Angel.” Sy said, wrapping his arms around her and resting his chin on top of her head. “Then, it'll be the four of us against the world.” He sighed, content and excited, before letting out a jaw cracking yawn.
Lily laughed. “Austin Wyatt, why don't you rest?” She suggested, tipping her head back to look up at him. “We're going to be here a while.”
“I don't want to sleep, while you're going through this.” He protested, shaking his head.
“All right.” She sighed, scooting to the edge of the bed. “Turn the lights out and lay down with me. Problem solved, Captain.”
“You're so smart.” Sy cooed, moving around the foot of the hospital bed.
He closed the door and turned out the lights, but paused to grab his phone and turn on the gentle ASMR rain sounds Lily had grown to love falling asleep to, then stepped out of his sandals and removed his hoodie, before laying down in the space she had created for him, his palm cupping the underside of her prominent belly as he curled his body around hers.
Lily whined, as a particularly harsh contraction bared down on her, forcing her to curl in on herself. She felt a gush between her legs, then a surge of back and abdominal pain hit, making her cry out and wake up Sy with the sound.
“Lily, what's wrong?” He asked, frightened.
“Something's not right.” She gasped, whimpering in agony, face pinched and drenched in sweat. “Something's very wrong, Austin.” She panted, shaking her head.
Sy scrambled out of bed with her and yanked the blankets back and saw the bed was wet, but it wasn't the wetness that startled him, it was the blood on part of her hospital gown. “Christ.” He scrambled for the help button, jamming it with his finger several times, before rushing out into the hallway.
“Help!” He screamed, his heart pounding in his chest like a heavy machine gun.
A nurse materialized in the hall in front of him. “What is it?”
“She's bleeding!” Sy cried, his blue eyes wild with fright and desperation.
The nurse sprinted into Lily's room and found her rolled onto her back, still gasping in pain, she pulled up her drenched and bloody gown and saw some of the issue, before calling a code, that only made Sy panic even more.
“What's happening to them?” He demanded, gripping Lily's trembling hand.
“I don't want to say, unless I'm wrong and I cause you to worry.” The nurse told him, turning up the drip of Lily's IV fluids.
“We're already scared shitless!” Sy barked at her, bearing his teeth.
“Austin!” Lily mewled, weakly.
Sy looked down at her, his terror-stricken eyes still flashing with anger, before it faded. “I'm sorry.” He wheezed, gulping thickly.
Dr. Evers and several other nurses came bursting into the room, a half moment later.
“What's going on, Mandy?” Dr. Evers asked the nurse, quickly washing her hands and pulling on gloves.
“She's leaking amniotic fluid with a good amount of blood, Doctor.” Nurse Mandy answered, moving out of Dr. Evers' way.
“Is that unusual?” Sy asked, looking around the room.
“It's not unusual for her amniotic sac to break during labor, no. As it should, so the baby can be delivered. But, it's a question of premature breakage, and if it has broken prematurely, coupled with blood, could mean a Placental Abruption.”
“Lord have mercy.” Sy gasped, raking a shaking hand through his hair.
Dr. Evers took the wand of the ultrasound machine from one of the nurses and, as carefully as she could, pressed it to Lily's stomach, moving it around, her brow pinched as she watched the grainy black and white monitor in front of her.
“It looks like she has a Revealed Placental Abruption.” She told them, finishing up with the ultrasound. “We're going to need to change birthing plans and deliver via a C-Section with a possible blood transfusion afterwards.”
“Is it that bad?” Lily asked, looking at her, pale with pain and fright.
“You have nothing to worry about, you and the baby will be just fine.” Dr. Evers replied, trying to encourage her and keep her calm. “Let's get you ready to meet your little one.” She smiled, standing up and going out into the hall, Sy on her heels.
“How bad is it?” He asked, lowering his voice. “And don't lie to me.”
Dr. Evers sighed. “Her Placenta has come away from her Uterus and there's blood filling between that space, then coming from her cervix. Lily is showing signs of shock from the blood loss.” She told him, plainly.
“God.” Sy huffed, turning away from her and pressing his hands to his face. “How?” He asked, turning back to her.
“I'm not completely sure, but I think she just possibly had a particularly hard contraction, seeing how hard they were on her, and it ruptured the sac in just the right way.” She explained, feeling for him. “I don't think we'll lose either of them, Mr. Syverson. But, this C-Section needs to happen, for their well-being to be maintained.”
“I don't care what you have to do for my girls.” Sy told her, bluntly. “Just---” He bit his lip and shook his head, hot tears blurring his vision. “I-I can't lose them, they're my only reason.” He choked, rubbing hard at his eyes.
Dr. Evers gently laid a small hand on his beefy arm. “You have my word.” She whispered, giving it a soft squeeze, even though she knew it was against her job to make promises. “Now, get back to her, she'll need you.” She told him, with a little nudge back into the room as Lily called out his name.
“I'm comin', Angel!” Sy called out, but took a moment to rub and wipe the tears out of his eyes, not wanting her to see he had been crying and worrying. “Hey, sweetums.” He grinned at her, cupping her face and kissing her cool forehead. “I'm right here.” He whispered, brushing her damp hair out of her face.
“I'm right here, love. I'm not going anywhere.”
“I'm scared.” Lily sniveled, looking up at him.
Sy's jaw quivered, hearing her words and seeing her face, the way her eyes shined with tears. “It'll be fine, Angel.” He cooed, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. “You're in good hands with Dr. Evers and all these amazing nurses. You and the baby will be safe and sound.” He tried to reassure her, stroking her hair and the side of her face.
“You'll be there.” She asked, hugging her arms around his waist.
“Oh, they'd have to call in the Special Reaction Team to keep me out of the room, Sweetheart.” He laughed, pressing his lips to the top of her head. “I'll be right by your side, the whole side, Sweet Pea.” He promised, sighing softly.
“All right, Mrs. Syverson, we're ready for you.” Nurse Mandy said, coming back into the room.
“Okay.” Lily nodded, reluctantly pulling away from Sy. “My husband can come with me, right?” She asked, wanting to make sure.
“Of course.” She nodded, looking at Sy, who smiled softly at her. “We wouldn't want Dad to miss the birth either, would we?” She said, grinning, then put up the sides of Lily's hospital bed and wheeled her out of the room.
They got Lily and Sy down to the operating room, separating the two long enough, so they could get Sy in a pair of scrubs and Lily set up for the C-Section. When they met up again, Sy stood beside Lily's head, a small screen shielding their view, unless Sy stood to his full height and peeked over it, but he re-framed from doing so, too terrified to see them cut into his wife, especially knowing there was nothing he could do for her; other than kiss her forehead, stroke the side of her face and neck, and speak quietly to her.
“You're doing great, Lily. I'm so proud of you.” He told her, kissing her on the lips. “Soon, she'll be in our arms. You're little Rose Bud.” He smiled, his heart thundering with a mixture of nerves and excitement. “You're going to be an absolutely amazing mama.”
Lily smiled weakly at him. “You'll be a great Daddy too, Austin.” She whispered, sighing. “You'll have all her future boyfriends shaking in their cowboy boots.” She chuckled, fresh tears glittering in the corners of her eyes.
“Oh, she won't be dating until I'm long in my grave, Angel.” Sy laughed back at her, wiping her tears away.
“We have to call my grandparents, Sy.” Lily suddenly realized, her eyes growing.
Sy nodded at her, his fingertips ghosting over the side of her neck. “Don't you fret yourself, Angel. I'll call’em after she's out. You have my word.” He promised, bending over to rub noses with her.
There was a small noise in the room, drawing Lily and Sy's attention, they paused, time around them seemed to freeze in place, as a moment later a shrill wail filled the bright and sterile room. Both of them let out a relieved and surprised laugh, realizing it was their daughter, making her first protest of being in the world. Sy straightened up, but his hand still cupped the side of Lily's face, as his eyes zoned in on Dr. Evers skillfully handling his bloody and messy baby daughter, her teeny, purple face pinched and wrinkled as she let out another scream, hands clenched, her arms and legs curled into her wee body; his legs almost gave out at the sight of her.
“She's gorgeous, Angel.” He cried, letting his tears run free.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Syverson.” Dr. Evers grinned, looking over at Sy, before handing the baby off to a nurse and returning to her task with Lily.
Sy let his eyes off Rose for a moment, to look at what Dr. Evers was doing with Lily, and regretted it, as he felt a hot lump instantly form in his throat at the sight. He had seen miles of blood before, blown apart and severed body parts, dead bodies and dying men, and not once did he blanch at the sight of it. But, the sight of the doctor's hand deep inside of Lily's abdomen caused bright, flashing spots in his blue eyes and the room to tilt at a funny angle. He nearly passed out, when she removed Lily's placenta, just managing to pull himself together at the last minute.
“Are you all right, Mr. Syverson?” A nurse asked, as she approached him, a pair of scissors in her hand, but a deeply concerned expression on her face.
“Yeah, I'm fine.” Sy replied, clearing his throat. “I'm okay.” He repeated, more steadily.
The nurse stared at him for a moment longer, assessing him, before she was reassured Sy wasn't actually going to lose consciousness. “Would you like to cut your daughter's umbilical cord?” She asked, getting to why she had come to him in the first place, holding out the scissors to him.
“Yes, I would.” Sy nodded, taking the implements from her, smiling at Lily as he started to follow the nurse to where they had the baby laying down on a small table, all cleaned off and checked out. “Hey there, sweet thing.” He cooed at her, reaching out and gently resting his hand on her chest, his large palm nearly covering her entire squirming body.
“You can cut right there.” The nurse said, indicating to Sy, where to cut the cord.
“All right.” He nodded, biting his lip, and with a small bit of nerves, cut through the thick, gray cord.
The nurse slipped a little beanie onto Rose's head, then wrapped her in a hospital blanket, before picking her up and turned to Sy, who's eyes flared, realizing she was about to hand him his daughter. He gulped as he awkwardly held out his muscular arms for her, allowing the nurse to show him how to hold Rose, how to support her head and cradle her body, until she stepped back, letting Sy hold her solo.
“Oh gosh.” He mumbled, staring down at her, his eyes huge and his mouth hanging open. “Welcome into the world, Rose Imogene Syverson.” He said and smiled at her, feeling as giddy as a school-boy. “I'm your Daddy.” He told her, unconscionably swaying side to side as he watched her settle in against his chest, transfixed. “You are just as angelic as your mama, you know that?” He chuckled, delicately tracing his fingertip down the bridge of her nose.
“Do you wanna meet your mama?” He asked, tilting his head at her, then looked up at the nurse. “Can I take her over there?”
“Of course. She's yours!” The nurse grinned, charmed by this hulk of a man brought down to a big marshmallow by his little baby daughter.
Sy beamed, turning and went to Lily. “Angel, meet our little Rose.” He said, sitting down in the little stool they had provided him, when he came into the room, and shifted close to Lily's head. “This is your mama.” He purred at Rose, positioning himself so the two of them could see the other.
“She's so beautiful, Austin.” Lily replied, smiling at her daughter's face, tears slipping down her own. “She's perfect.” She sniffled, overcome with emotion. “God, I love the two of you so much, Bear.” She said, grinning at Sy through her tears.
“I love you too, Angel.” Sy replied, choking up. “I love the both of you, with all my heart.” He gulped, leaning in to kiss her temple.
“This is the second best day of my life.” He said, looking between Lily and Rose, with pride, as he sat on the edge of her bed, now that they were back in their room in the maternity ward.
“What was the first?” Lily asked, chuckling at him, gently stroking Rose's head as she nursed her.
“When I married you.” Sy answered, grinning and patting her thigh.
Thankfully, Lily and Rose seemed to have no ill effects from the Placental Abruption, but Dr. Evers did give Lily one blood transfusion, to be sure and safe, while also wishing to keep the both of them in the hospital for a few days for monitoring and tests, in case there was any lingering dangers.
“What did my grandparents say?” Lily asked, carefully shifting, feeling the stables of her C-Section pull as she did.
“That they were super excited to have a great-grandbaby. They wanted photos of her and were thankful neither of you were seriously harmed and would pray that the both of you would remain in good health.” Sy recited the basics of what Lily's grandfather had said to him on the phone, when he finally found the moment to step away and call him.
“I figured, we'd take a photo, when you were feeling better.” He added, seeing how pale she still was, and the dark circles under her eyes. “There's no rush, neither of you are going anywhere soon.”
“No, we are not.” Lily agreed, smiling down at Rose. “Like you said, Daddy Syverson, it's the four of us against the world.” She said, then looked back up at him, feeling proud, complete and safe.
“For now, and ever, Lily Ana Syverson.”
Epilogue - Eight Years Later:
“Stop touching me!” Rose roared, smacking at a hand poking into her side.
“London James!” Sy barked over his shoulder as he stood at the stove, flipping pancakes. “Stop buggin' your sister.” He said, scolding his six-year-old son, who sat at the table with his sibling.
“But, she stole my pancake, Pap!” London huffed back, crossing his arms over his chest, defiantly.
“I don't care, I'll give you another one.” Sy answered, shaking his head, and picking up the surviving plate full of steaming hot pancakes, to toss two more on his errant offspring's plate. “So, keep your hands and feet to yourself, young'un.”
“Can I have more, Daddy?”
Sy looked down at the sweet, faced girl sitting across from her twin brother, his sweet as pie, Poppy Eloise. “Of course, my little blossom.” He cooed at her, playfully winking at her and doling out a couple more pancakes to her, before sitting down in a seat beside her. “We have to be quieter; you know your mama hasn't been feeling too well.” He said, drizzling syrup on his own breakfast.
“Well, well, well!” Sy grinned a few minutes later, turning sideways in his seat and grinning brightly, as he held his hands out. “Look at this little tumbleweed.” He cooed, as his youngest carefully bumped down the kitchen stairs on a full pamper. “Dallas Cole, it looks like you've set a whole box of IEDs off in that diaper of yours.” He commented, scooping Dallas up and sitting him on his knee, which only made the three year old giggle with delight.
Sy grinned at the toddler, gently bouncing his knee and tickling his sides, making his shriek with laughter and squirm in his hands. The older children just rolled their eyes and continued to eat their breakfast, hoping to finish, so they could go outside and play. But, Sy stopped terrorizing his son, when he noticed Lily coming down the stairs and felt guilty for having bothered her, knowing she was tired.
“I'm sorry, Angel. I kept telling the kids to keep quiet and I didn't do it myself.” He apologized to her, gently patting Dallas on the back as he fussed, upset that his father stopped playing with him.
“It's not your fault, Bear.” Lily replied, smiling at him and her collected family, pressing a hand to her back.
“You all right, Lily?” He frowned, seeing the expression on her face, slipping Dallas off his leg and stood up, to go to her. “Is it the baby?” He whispered, laying his hand on her protruding stomach.
Lily was a few weeks shy of nine months pregnant with her and Sy's fifth child and agreed upon last. After the joy of two girls and two boys, they decided they had enough blessings in their home to go around. But this baby was going to be a surprise though, they had learned the gender of the other four, but with this one, they wanted to know when the baby came into the world.
Which might be sooner, rather than later.
“It's time, Austin.” Lily sighed, looking at him with an experienced expression, and rested her hand on his beard face.
Sy's eyes flared for a moment.
”Okay!” He nodded, kicking himself into gear. “Guys, you need to quickly go to your rooms and get dressed, then meet on the porch in five minutes.” He said, turning to the older kids, who looked at him with alertness. “Pronto!” He added, with urgency, bending over to grab Dallas and settled him on his hip. “I'll be right back, I need to change his diaper and get him into some clothes.” He said, mindlessly kissing Lily's cheek, before rushing off upstairs with the kids.
Lily calmly chuckled, watching everyone around her rush about, grabbing a sticky pancake off of Sy's abandoned plate and nibbled on it. Labor and contractions had all become nature to her, almost nothing like labor with Rose, where she was in crippling pain. The contractions hurt and some caused her to pause, pressing a hand to her stomach and breathe, but for the most part, Lily could work through them with little issue. There was still the scary possibility of another Abruption. However, with luck she hadn't had a repeat, but she did need another C-Section with the twins, London and Poppy.
Thankfully, with Dallas, she was able to have a normal labor and delivery.
Sighing, she waddled into the living room and smiled fondly at Aika, who lounged on the couch. The German Shepherd was a Senior Citizen now, her long snout graying, and had survived a war and the trials of child rearing. Lily fondly remembered watching Rose holding onto Aika's black and brown fur and taking some of her first shaky and wobbly steps, the dog patiently and slowly walking with her. The pup had been as much of a parent to the kids as Sy and Lily had been themselves.
“You're a good girl.” Lily whispered, patting Aika, who twitched an ear at her, but didn't move anything else.
Continuing on, Lily made it to the front door, the sound of chaos on the second floor reached her down below. When they found out about the twins, Sy converted Lily's office into another nursery, pushing Lily's workspace into the living room, and when the test strip turned out positive with Dallas, there was only one thing to do, and it wasn't moving out of the house that had brought Lily and Sy together; it was making it bigger. Sy had gone to city hall and found the blueprints to the house, and in no time, the house transformed, adding three more rooms, one of them being an office for Lily, a surprise, since Sy knew sometimes she needed her space from the kids and a quiet place to do her work, and an extra bathroom.
When he wasn't tearing the house apart and putting it together again, Sy had transformed the land it sat on. He fixed up the barn and put up fences, before buying four horses, something he had wanted to do since he was a kid, and he knew Lily loved horses as well. It broke both their hearts when Juniper, the horse next door, passed away. Sy raised the horses and had grown to be quite adept at foaling, which hadn't surprised Lily in the slightest, he would sell the foals at the local county auction that came up every year, then started all over again.
It brought in good money, on top of Lily's own business, so the Syverson family was rather well off in their own right, and they had fallen into a peaceful, if not somewhat chaotic, existence and neither Lily or Sy would change a bit of it
“Nope.” She said aloud, shaking her head, as she sat down on the porch swing and looking out over the land, remembering how overgrown and isolated it had once been, until she found the bravery to put an ad in the paper and a Captain came to answer it.
“Mama, I can't find my shoes!” London's voice screamed from the stairs leading into the living room.
Lily drew a deep breath, smirking. “They're under your bed, LJ!” She hollered back to him, rocking on the swing.
A grand total of five minutes later, like the military promptness the house had the habit of falling into at times of need, a herd of feet came roaring out the front door. Sy barreling out first, Dallas tucked under one arm and the baby bag under the other, with Rose, Poppy and London trailing close behind him. Lily looked over at them, as they filed out, clustering on the porch and staring at her, like a bunch of new recruits, waiting for orders from their General.
“All right, troops!” She said, pushing up onto her feet. “Let's go meet your new sibling.” She said, going down the front steps.
“I want another sister!” Poppy said, from her booster seat. “I want to play barbies with her, since Roo-Roo won't play them with me.” She said, kicking her feet, excitedly.
“I want another brother!” London echoed his sentiment, from the back seat. “So, we can play GI Joe's and like we're in the Wild West!”
“What about you, Rose?” Sy asked, looking at his oldest through the rear-view mirror. “What do you want?”
“A sibling that doesn't drive me crazy.” She replied, as Dallas tossed some of his goldfish at her.
“So, three boys and two girls.” Dr. Evers grinned at Lily and Sy. “Talk about a full house.” She joked, standing beside Lily's bed as she held the latest Syverson, a son.
Dr. Evers delivered all of the Syverson children and had become very good friends with Lily and Sy.
“You can say that again.” Lily nodded, snuggling her newborn.
“What are you going to name him?” Dr. Evers asked, tilting her head at them.
Lily looked up at Sy and bit her lip, but Sy laid his hand on her back and nodded his head at her. “Boston Davis.” She revealed, looking down at the baby, her heart became sore. “We're giving him my grandfather's name as a middle name, to honor him.” She whimpered, a hard lump in her throat.
“Her grandfather passed away four months ago.” Sy whispered, rubbing Lily's back. “He really went downhill after his wife passed from a bad stroke, three and a half years ago, and it finally caught up with him, I suppose.” He explained, deeply saddened by the loss as well, as if it was his own grandparents.
“I'm sure that he would have loved and appreciated it.” Dr. Evers said, quietly, as she gently touched Lily's arm.
“I hope so.” She sighed, softly kissing Boston's forehead. “They'll be a strong, Southern Generation, either way.” She said, looking up at Sy with pride.

He was home, finally and for good.
After more than ten years of service in the U.S Army and retiring as a Captain, Austin Wyatt Syverson was no longer a soldier. It felt amazing to be back on southern soil again, home sweet home; back in the city he was named after.
Austin, Texas.
Slinging his bag over his shoulder, Syverson found his way back home, to his flat in central Austin. He didn't expect a huge welcome back, unlike the first time he came back home from overseas, years before. His parents had decorated his apartment with streamers, a 'welcome back' sign and balloons. They had cake and noise makers as he entered, surprising him. But, this time, there was none of that, just bare gray walls, covered in band posters and other things Syverson liked.
His father had died of a heart attack two years into his second deployment and his mother had passed from breast cancer a year before. He was an only child and he wasn't close to his other relatives, so he would have hit the floor if any of them had even sent him a 'welcome back' text.
No, Austin Syverson was on his own, and he was more than all right with that. One thing he wasn't all right with was not having a job. So, after settling in, getting into his civilian clothing and cooking a good home cooked lunch, he picked up a newspaper and perused the job section. He preferred a job that he could do with his hands, he had always liked working with his hands, even as a kid, tinkering in the garage with his dad. Several advertisements caught his attention and he saved the numbers in his phone, planning on calling them to inquire about the job, but for now, Syverson just wanted to relax and settle in as a newly-minted civilian.
The one thing he did miss was Aika, the German Shepherd he befriended back in Baghdad. He had started the process of having Aika sent over from Iraq, but she was stuck in a month-long quarantine, before she would be cleared to be with him again, in Austin.
“She's all the family I need.” Sy said, popping the cap off a cold one.
Bright and early the next morning, Sy started calling the numbers in the advertisements and discovered to his disgruntled annoyance, that the paper he picked up was nearly a week old. He made a mental note to give the clerk at the corner store a piece of his mind, the next time he saw him.
“I'm really sorry, Mr. Syverson.” the owner of a construction company sighed, feeling bad that he didn't have room on his current job for him.
“It's fine, I'll find something.” Sy frowned, rubbing the side of his face. “Thanks though.” He sighed, and started to hang up.
“Wait!”
Sy paused, his finger almost pressed to his screen to hang up the call, and put it back to his ear. “Yeah?” He replied, biting his lip.
“I just remembered, it's a private contract, I got it a couple days ago.” He explained, fumbling through several stacks of papers and files he had strewn across his desk. “It's out in Celina, I know that's a bit of a drive from where you are in Austin.”
“That's fine.” Sy answered, relieved. “A job is a job.”
He figured if he could do a job overseas, he could do a job three hours outside of Austin.
“Well, if you want it, it's yours.” He told Sy, finally finding the paper he was looking for.
“Of course!”
He gave Sy the details of the contract, it was a private contract, sent into his company by a young lady, who lived just outside of Celina, Texas, on a small farm. Apparently the house and the barn on the property were in disrepair and she wanted them repaired. So, Sy took the contract and the information, then hung up with him, immediately calling the number he had given him for the young lady.
“Hello?” A soft, almost meek, voice answered.
“Hi, I'm Cap-” Sy cleared his throat and squeezed his eyes shut, it was going to be a while, before he broke himself out of the habit of introducing himself as Captain Syverson. “I'm Austin Syverson. I know you don't know me, but I got your contract from Mr. McJames, the owner of Diamond Ridge Constructions, in Austin.” He explained to her, sure it sounded a bit crazy.
“Oh.” She replied, unconsciously brushing her hair out of her face. “Right. The contract.”
“Is it still available?” He asked, feeling a small tingle of apprehension in the pit of his stomach.
“Yes!” She answered, hastily, worried she had given him the wrong impression. “Yes, the contract is still available. You're actually my only inquirer for it.” She told him, honestly.
“I would love to meet up with you and talk about it.” Sy said, letting out a relieved sigh and felt his massive shoulders relax.
“Um,” She gulped, licking her lips and felt her hands shake.
“I could meet you in Celina, take you for coffee?” He suggested, hoping to make her more comfortable with meeting him in a public place. “My treat.” He added, with a sweet tone.
“No, no.” She squeaked, fidgeting in her chair. “That's all right, if you want to take the contract it's yours, Mr. Syverson. It's seventeen an hour, with everything provided.” She explained to him, taking deep breaths, to calm down her nerves.
Sy was a little surprised by how easy it was, but he was willing to do the job, either way. “Of course, I would gladly take the job for you.” He agreed.
“Excellent.” She smiled, bouncing on her toes. “You can start at your earliest convenience.” She told him.
“I can come by tomorrow morning, if that's all right with you.” He replied, looking around his kitchen for something to write with and on, so he could take down her address.
“That's splendid.” She assured him, then rattled off her address for him. “If you have any issues finding the place, just call.” She told him, before they hung up.
Sy woke up early, for the three hour drive from Austin to Celina.
It was a nice drive, watching the bustling city of Austin slowly melt away to the rural landscape of the countryside, endless farmlands of varying crops. Sy found it rather soothing, after seeing nothing but sand, rubble and burned out buildings for so long. He felt like he was getting back to his roots again, his southern heritage. His GPS chimed into his thoughts, announcing he was within a mile of her home. So, he turned off the music he was playing and rolled down the window of his truck, squinting at the mailboxes that dotted the few dirt driveways along the long country road.
“You've passed your destination.”
“Fuck.” Sy grunted, tires screeching as he turned around.
He stopped his truck by the side of the road and got out, looking up and down the empty road, frowning. He pulled his GPS device off its holder and started walking in the direction it indicated her house was in, pausing, as it told him he was standing exactly where he needed to be. Turning in a circle, he noticed the sun baked, wooden gate, that was slightly hidden by weeds and had no mailbox. Frowning, Sy locked up his truck, pushed open the gate that almost fell over in the process, before walking up the driveway.
The simple, two story farmhouse slowly came into view. The roof of the farm porch was dilapidated and sagging, there were shingles missing on both roofs, the paint of the house was faded and peeling, chipping away from the warped and cracked boards, a couple of them were missing.
“It definitely needs work.” Sy said, stopping to look the house over, then noticed the barn a couple of yards away, in even worse condition. “Looks like I got my work cut out for me.” He sighed, but wasn't daunted by any of it.
His eyes moved away from the barn and back to the house as the screen door opened and a woman stepped out onto the porch; Sy could practically hear the high-pitch creak of the screen door from where he stood. She was a teeny little thing, maybe five foot, and looked timid, by the way she hugged the screen door, using it to hide behind as she watched him finish approaching the house.
“Mr. Syverson?” She called out to him, biting her bottom lip.
“Yes, ma'am.” Sy answered, stopping at the bottom of the warped steps leading up to her on the porch.
“I hope you didn't have too much trouble finding the place?”
“Not at all.” He smiled at her, shaking his head. “I don't lose my way often.” He assured him, teasingly.
“Good.” She chuckled, nervousness. “I suppose you'd like a closer look at the place?” She asked, glancing around the porch.
“If you don't mind.” Sy nodded, glancing around as well.
Biting her lip, she stepped out onto the porch, the screen door closing with a soft bang. “I'm sure you saw a lot of the issues on your way up.” She explained, slowly stepping off the porch.
“I have.” Sy nodded, looking down and smirking at her bare feet. “Seems a lot of the boards are rotted and the house, and barn, could use a good fresh coat of paint.”
“That's the least of the problems.” She replied, looking at the side of the house as they rounded its corner, heading towards the barn. “There's several weak points in the roof, on both the barn and the house.”
“When was the place built?” He asked, touching the side of the house, flecks of paint brushing off under his fingertips.
“1921.” She answered, looking up to the top of the house, squinting in the bright sunlight. “I bought the place four years ago.” She explained, turning towards the barn.
“I can understand you wanting to fix up the house, being you live in it.” Sy commented, checking out the barn. “But, what do you want the barn with? If you don't mind me asking.”
“I'm considering turning it into my studio.” She answered, trying to push open the barn door.
“What do you do?” Sy asked, helping her push open the door; one handed, while she leaned her body into it.
“I'm a graphic designer and a photographer.” She explained to him, stepping inside the barn with him.
“That's cool.” He smiled at the back of her head.
“Thanks.” She replied, smiling at him over her shoulder. “So,” She gulped and glanced around the barn. “Do you think you can do the job?” She asked, regarding him.
Sy heaved a sigh and roamed around the barn for a moment, checking things out. “I'm more than sure I could.” He finally said, stopping in front of her and crossed his arms. “It might take a couple of weeks to finish. But, I can do it.”
“Great.” She smiled, relieved and excited to hear that he could.
“I can start right away, if you want.” He added, resolute.
“Sounds excellent.” She nodded, fidgeting and nervously twisting the hem of her tank top with her fingers. “I can get the tools for you.” She turned and left the barn, heading back towards her house.
Sy followed after her, staying on the top step of the porch, while she disappeared inside. “Here.” He smiled as she came back, carrying a heavy red and rushed toolbox; stepping forward to take it from her.
“If you need anything else, more tools or supplies, like, I don't know, lumber or whatever.” She mumbled, staring down at her bare feet, shyly. “Just ask.”
“I will.” Sy grinned down at her, hefting the toolbox and making the tools inside of it rattle.
With that, Sy gave her a gentlemanly nod of his head and stepped off the porch. He carried the heavy box of tools down the long driveway, back to his truck, still parked on the side of the road, where he left it. Opening the back hatch, he set the tool box down in the truck bed and opened it, checking out all the tools that were stored inside it.
“Not too bad.” He nodded, approving of the selection that was inside, then turned towards his first project for the place, the pathetic excuse and falling over the gate.
Digging his phone out of his pocket, Sy googled the closet hardware store, secured the toolbox in the back of his truck and hopped in behind the wheel and followed the directions into the town of Celina. He knew she told him to tell her if he needed anything while working on her property, but Sy had a sound enough savings, that he didn't mind spending his own money on bits and bobs. He browsed the aisles of the hardware store, picking up a couple of tools he would need and weren't in the box, then several boards of wood, to build a new gate.
“Thanks.” Sy muttered, nodding his head at the hardware store owner, collecting his things and packing them back into his truck.
Getting back to the farm, Sy parked close to the head of the driveway and got to work, tearing down the old gate and piled up the lumber to the side, out of the way. Without a power source, this far out, Sy relied on a trusty hand saw and the thick muscle of his arms to cut the fresh boards, still strongly smelling of the pine tree they were hewn from. He measured everything out, tucking the pencil behind his ear, as he leaned into the saw as he cut them to length and nailed them together, forming the new gate.
She watched him the whole time, from the upstairs window of her office. He was a hard and diligent worker. Taking painstaking time to double, or even triple, his measuring of the boards, before finally cutting them with a manual saw. In a matter of hours, he had the new gate made and started putting it up. Biting her lip and saving her work on her laptop, she went downstairs into her humble little kitchen, whipped up a couple of things, making some food and drinks, before texting him.
» If you're hungry, I made lunch.
Sy smiled at her text, putting the last screw into the gate and pushed it open with two fingers. Grinning and proud of his work, then turning back to his truck, he put all the tools away and cleaned up the rest of the mess he made, then drove through the gate, stopping long enough to get out and close the gate behind him, then went up and parked beside her own little car. She came out onto the porch, holding a plate of food and a tall glass of cold lemonade.
“Thank you.” He grinned at her, taking the plate and glass, and sitting down on the rickety porch swing, balancing the plate in his lap.
“You're welcome.” She mumbled back, so shy that she didn't meet his blue eyes.
Chuckling, Sy took a deep gulp of the lemonade, parched beyond belief after all the work he had done. He moaned as the cold tang washed over his tongue, refreshing him tremendously. “That is delicious, thank you.” He complimented her.
“Thank you.” She smiled, still fidgeting beside the swing. “I'll be inside, if you need me.” She said in a rush, and scuttled inside.
Sy tilted his head as the screen door slammed shut behind her. She was a curious person, always so nervous and shy, fidgeting and never meeting his eye. He wondered if his presence made her feel uncomfortable, he was wearing a red, DILLIGAF t-shirt, a tight pair of black jeans and boots. He was an imposing guy, with stacked muscle, which made his job in the Special Forces easier, and his head was shaved, while sporting a beard. Sy's whole presence came off as authoritative and commanding, it was a natural effect he had, it was one of the reasons he had advanced in the military and succeeded as a leader so well.
Sighing, he finished off his food and gulped down the rest of his lemonade, before getting up and carefully knocking on the wood of the door frame, peeking inside. The main door was half open and he could see into the foyer and the living room beyond that, the large rug on the hardwood floors and the mismatched couch and furniture of the living room, a flat screen tv mounted above the fireplace. He could just see around the corner into what looked like a dining room, seeing the edge of a table and a couple of chairs. She appeared from the other side of the door, looking up into his eyes for a moment, before dropping them down again.
“All finished?” She asked, quietly.
“I am, thank you.” Sy smiled at her, pressing his lips together. “It was really good, the best I've had so far, since coming home.” He told her, taking a step back as she opened the screen door, taking the dishes from him, their fingers brushing.
“Is there anything else I can do for you?” He asked, gulping at the soft touch of her fingers.
“No, thank you.” She squeaked, drawing away from him. “I appreciate you fixing the gate.” She added, breathlessly.
“Of course, ma'am.” Sy smiled, chuckling softly. “I'll be back tomorrow and I'll have a look around the house and see what projects need more direct attention.” He explained to her, glancing around the porch.
“That sounds great.” She mumbled back, clearing her throat.
“I'll take my leave then.” Sy said, bowing his head to her, and heading back to his truck.
There was an infernal banging coming from outside, with a loud clattering that followed, all of it in a steady rhythm that was driving her crazy.
She was nuzzled into the warmth of her thick down blankets, in that heavenly position, where you found the perfect spot on the mattress to lay, and even the slightest movement will ruin it, in a millisecond. She growled into her pillow, still reluctant to move even the tiniest bit, but she couldn't take it anymore, and thrashed out of bed, in a fling of arms, legs, pillows and blankets.
“What in the world?” She huffed, pulling on an oversized hoodie and scrambled downstairs.
She froze, catching a glimpse out of the large bay window in her den, a huge male with a shaved head, and realized it was Sy. Gulping, she moved closer and watched him through the window. He wasn't in his red shirt and jeans this morning, but wore a blue tank top and a pair of basketball shorts, but still sporting his combat boots. He also had wireless earbuds in, head bumping to whatever he was listening to. Mustering some early morning courage and stepped over to the front door, pulling it open.
“Careful!” Sy called out, appearing from the other side of the house.
She looked down and saw a good amount of the boards of the porch were gone, and looked back up at him.
“Morning.” He smiled, one corner a bit higher in an amused way.
“Morning.” She squeaked back, burrowing into her hoodie a little bit.
“I thought I would start on the porch.” Sy said, looking over what he had already torn up.
“I-I can see..that.” She stammered, biting the inside corner of her lip, then looked behind her, to the coo-coo clock on the foyer wall.
It was seven in the morning, and Sy had already been on the farm for an hour and pulled up just about half of the wrap around porch. She looked back at him and was rather impressed by it, with a shy nod of her head, she went back inside and into the kitchen, setting up the coffee maker and got breakfast going. Standing in the middle of the kitchen, she glanced in the direction of the noise and followed it again.
“Would you like some breakfast or coffee?” She asked as Sy yanked up another warmed porch board, with his gloved hands, biceps bulging as he got it loose with a grunt.
Tossing the board into the growing pile, Sy wiped his sweaty face on his arms and turned to look up at her. “I would love some, if that's all right with you.” He answered, he only had a liquid breakfast of a tall black coffee from Starbucks as he left Austin for Celina.
“Pancakes, eggs and bacon, okay with you?” She asked, fidgeting.
“Yes, ma'am.” Sy nodded, smiling sweetly at her.
A smile twitched on her lips, before she turned on her bare feet and went back into the kitchen. She pulled open the refrigerator, pulling out the milk, eggs and bacon, before going into the pantry to grab the dry pancake ingredients. The coffee maker beeps as she whipped up the pancake batter and turned, pulling out two cups from the cabinet and setting up her own cup, before going back to the front porch.
“Coffee is ready, if you want to—come in—and get your cup ready.” She told him, shyly.
“Thank you.” Sy smiled at her, wiping his face again.
Pulling off his gloves, stuffing them into his back pocket, Sy entered the house, glancing around as he followed her into the kitchen. He found his cup by the coffee maker and smirked at it, it was a Texas Rodeo cup, a picture of a bucking horse on the background of the shape of Texas.
“I wasn't sure what you took in your coffee.” She commented as he stirred a single sugar into the cup and took a seat at the breakfast nook table.
“Either straight black, or with one sugar.” He replied, taking a sip of the steaming brown liquid, while he watched her finish mixing the pancake batter. “Depends on my mood.” He added, as she poured a bit of the thick batter into the sizzling hot skillet on the very old, blue and gas stove, that had to be made in the 1940's.
Easily. Sy thought, taking a deep gulp of his coffee.
“So, you live here alone?” He asked, lifting a brow at her and set it cup down on the table in front of him.
“I do.” She nodded, brushing her hair behind her ear, and flipped a couple of the pancakes.
“Does your family live nearby?”
She paused for a moment, her back stiffening at the mention of her family. “My mother passed away, when I was born.” She said, her voice strained. “I don't have any siblings and I don't know where my father is.” She explained, flipping the finished pancakes onto a plate by the stove and turned to the cardboard carton of eggs.
“How many would you like?” She asked, holding up a sooth, brown shelled egg.
“Three, please.” Sy replied, nodding his head to her. “Sunny side up.”
“What about your family?” She asked, cracking his eggs into the pan.
“No siblings and both of my parents are dead.” He answered her, leaning back in his chair. “My dad died of a heart attack, during my second deployment and my mom died of cancer, little over a year ago.” He explained, watching her baby his eggs.
“I'm so sorry.” She frowned, looking over her shoulder at him, with a look of pure sympathy, but no pity.
“It's all right.” Sy told her, his voice soft.
She fried the bacon with the eggs, then set the hot stack of pancakes and bacon on the table, setting Sy's plate of sunny side up eggs in front of him, with a container of syrup and a dish of butter, before handing him his fork. She sat down at the table, across from him, with her plate of two scrambled eggs, then took two pancakes and three pieces of bacon for herself, drizzling her pancakes with the maple syrup.
“Thank you, ma'am.” Sy smiled, before digging into his food.
“Lily.” She mumbled, staring at her untouched plate.
“Excuse me?” Sy frowned, looking up at her, fork posed at his mouth.
“Lily.” She replied, a little bit louder. “My name is Lily. You can call me, Lily.” She told him, meeting his eyes.
Sy grinned at her, lowering his fork and sitting up straighter. “All right then, Lily.” He nodded, loving the roll of her name off his tongue. “I'm Austin. But, everyone just calls me, Sy.”
Lily held her free hand out over their plates. “It's a pleasure.” She smiled at him, sweetly.
“Same.” Sy replied, gently taking her smooth and dainty hand in his big and calloused one.
Both of their faces warmed, before their hands pulled apart and they went back to finishing up their breakfast, having a polite and casual conversation as they did. With breakfast finished, Lily cleared away the plates and silverware, setting them in the sink to be washed later on, while Sy pulled his gloves back on and headed back out to finish pulling up the rest of the porch boards.
“Now that all the boards are pried up,” Sy explained as they ate lunch together in the kitchen. “I'll be able to start nailing down the new ones.” He told her, gulping down his glass of iced tea. “I'll put down the boards in front of the main door, so you can actually get out of the house, without having to be a hurdle jumper.” He laughed, wiping his mouth on the back of his hand.
Sy was true to his word, as he always was, he had all of the boards of the porch along the front of the house down, even though it took him until after sundown to pull it off. He sighed, as he drove the last nail in flush to the board. He stood with a groan, his knees and shoulders stiff and screaming from the hard work of the day. Gathering the strewn about tools, Sy put them back into the tool box and lugged that into the back of his truck.
“Lily.” He called out through the open screen door of the house, knocking gently on the door frame.
“Yes?” She called back, then appeared a moment later.
“I'm done for the day.” He told her, rubbing a hand over his bald head. “I'll be back tomorrow morning.”
“Bright and early, I'm sure, Captain.” She smiled at him.
Sy chuckled, he had told her a teeny bit about his career in the military, how he was a Captain and had spent more than ten years in the service, right out of high school, much to his parents' disappointment, since they wanted him to go to college. But, Sy wanted to serve his country, especially after the attacks in New York, causing him to enlist in early 2002.
“As always.” He grinned back, rubbing his palms on the thighs of his jeans. “Good night, Ms. Lily.” He bowed his head to her and stepped back.
“Good night, Sy.” She nodded back to him.
Sy got into his truck and sighed heavily, as he started the engine. He was exhausted beyond belief, he scrubbed at his face as he drove down the long driveway, stopping to open and close the gate as he left the property. He only got a couple miles from Lily's, when he decided he was just too exhausted to drive the three hours to Austin. So, he turned around and headed for Celina, knowing there was a small motel there that he could rent a room from for the night. There was also the upside of staying in the motel, it was only thirty minutes away from Lily's place, which meant he could get there earlier and could work for a few more hours.
Lily came out onto the porch, when she heard the hammering on the east side of the house stop. Her bare feet gliding over the smooth new boards on the porch. Rounding the corner, she found Sy with his back against the side of the house, where he was currently prying the warped siding off of. She chuckled, realizing he had apparently stopped for a short break and fallen asleep. She moved closer to him, watching his face pinch and his head shake, like he was trying to wake himself up, but couldn't.
“Sy?” She called to him, softly, kneeling down beside him. “Hey, Sy.” She reached out to touch his shoulder. “Austin.” She said his name, gently.
She had no sooner touched his shoulder, than he jerked violently and lunged towards her. Lily yelped and scrambled backwards, away from him. Sy shook his head several times and squeezed his eyes shut, breathing hard, his entire body rigged.
“I'm sorry.” Sy pushed the words out of his throat. “I am so sorry, I didn't realize I fell asleep.” He said, sitting back where he had been. “I didn't hurt you, did I?” He looked over at her, his intense blue eyes scanning her for anything out of place, but only found her frightened and shaking.
“Lily.” He choked.
He had episodes like this, on and off over the last thirteen years, he had decked more than one of his men, who tried shaking him awake. He had even ended up choking one of his commanding officers, and needed his squad to pull him off and slap him back into consciousness. Sy had lost more than one friend and girlfriend over his episodes, nightmares and PTSD, he really didn't want to lose Lily over them.
“I'm-I'm f-fine.” She gulped, biting her lip and tried to calm herself down. “Are you?” She asked, pressing her back to the post that supported the porch roof.
Sy let out a hard breath, pressing a hand to his face and took a moment to settle his nerves, relieved that he hadn't hurt her. “I'm fine. I just didn't realize I fell asleep. I've been really tired lately.” He paused and dropped his hand.
“I've been tired for years.” He admitted out loud.
“You've been working from sun up to sun down, here for a month. That's without a day off, Sy.” She said, drawing her knees up to her chest. “You really should take a day off. When was the last time you had an actual day off?” She asked, studying him.
“What year is it?” He asked, chuckling at her.
“That's not good.” Lily said, shaking her head at him, then stood up. “All right, Syverson. You're officially off duty, effective now.”
“But, the siding?” He said, waving his hand over the unfinished siding on that side of the house.
“It can wait.” She told him, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Well, what am I supposed to do then?” He asked, heaving a sigh and standing up.
“Whatever you like, Sy.” She said, turning back towards the house.
“What if I'd like to finish the siding?” He asked, smirking at her, impishly.
Lily turned, lifting a brow at him and narrowing her eyes, making him chuckle at her, throwing his hands up in defeat. He followed her into the house and poured himself a fresh cup of coffee. In the month since Sy had taken the job on Lily's property, they had gotten close and she had made him feel more at home than he had ever felt, anywhere in the world. Now, that she had made him take the day off, Sy had no idea what to do with it. Since he was a little boy, he was working hard, either on his parents' small farm or dealing with his deployment in the middle east.
He stepped back out on the porch, smirking to himself as he stood on solid porch boards that didn't squeak and creak under his weight. He still needed to stain the boards, but he planned on doing that after he removed all the siding from the house and put up fresh ones. His only missing plan with the siding was finding out if Lily wanted him to stain those too or if she wanted the house painted a particular color. But, he'd figure that out tomorrow, for now, he started out over the slice of land out front of the house. The grass was almost as tall as he was and he knew she didn't have a mower, not even an ancient push mower, so it would be something else he'd need to get his hands on to tame the wild jungle of sun bleached grass and weeds.
Humming to himself and taking a sip of his coffee, Sy walked around the porch, surveying the work he had done on that side, with two thirds of the siding pulled off, then continued to the back of the porch. The backyard was just as vast and wild as the front and sides of the house. Her land butted up against another farm that looked like they grew wheat. He noticed a slight movement on the thin trail that cut through the overgrowth and stepped off the porch to follow it, stopping several yards away from the boundary line that divided the two properties, finding Lily leaning on the rusted metal gate, her arm held out above it as a dapple-gray horse came trotting up to her, taking the apple out of her outstretched hand. She rubbed the mare's nose, smiling softly at it, and pulled out another apple out of the pouch of her hoodie.
Sy smiled as he watched her feed and pet that magnificent creature. “A friend of yours?” He asked, alerting her to his presence.
Lily blushed at him, trying to bite back her smile. “You can say that.” She replied, feeling the horse nudge her gently, and produced another apple. “Her name is Juniper.” She explained, patting the side of the horse's neck.
“She's beautiful.” Sy replied, but his eyes were on her.
“Isn't she.” Lily agreed, grinning at the horse, oblivious.
Sy moved closer to them, his shoulder brushing Lily's as he reached out to pet the mare, chuckling at Juniper's snort and head shake. “She hasn't been a mare for very long.” He pointed out.
“Nope.” Lily shook her head. “She was born a little more than three years ago. My neighbor, her owner, mostly deals in wheat and corn, but his daughter is working on becoming a champion barrel racer. So, he bought Juniper, when she was about a year old.”
“She looks in good shape for it.” He commented, checking out the rest of the horse. “Have you seen any of her shows?” He asked, looking back at Lily.
“Sadly, no.” She shook her head, shyly. “I do know she won her last one.” She added, smiling up at him. “It was her first win, in the ten or so shows she's competed in.”
Sy smiled at her, she seemed and sounded so proud of the horse's owner winning the competition. “We should go to her next one.” He suggested, lifting his brows at her.
“What?” Lily squeaked, looking at Sy like a frightened doe.
“Yeah, it will be a great day off for me.” He grinned at her, liking the idea. “I've never seen you leave the property, either.” He added, his brow creasing as he thought about it. “I've only seen you go far enough to get the mail, come to think of it.”
“I don't know.” She gulped, licking her lips nervously. “I've had a lot of work lately.” She stammered, fidgeting and rubbing her hands on her thighs.
“You give me guff for not taken a day off, and won't take one yourself.” He teased her, lightheartedly. “What's the worst that can happen?” He asked, leaning against the gate. “It's not like the world will blow up.”
“It might.” She mumbled, toeing at the sparse gravel under her feet.
Sy could tell she was anxious about leaving the house, he could understand that, the world was a shitty place, and he had seen a lot of that first hand. But, he blew it off, figuring it was just the stress of getting all her work done on time.
“I'll think about it.” Lily said, biting her lip and shyly scrunching up her body.
“Good.” He smiled, hopeful.

“Where have the two of you been?” Lily asked, coming down the stairs as Sy and her grandfather came out of his study.
“Just having a chat.” Sy smiled up at her.
“Lily, I have something I need to say to you.” Davis said, looking up at his granddaughter.
“Yeah, you know what, I have something I need to say to you too.” Lily replied, planting her hands on her hips.
“Oh, lord.” Sy mumbled under his breath, knowing the look of this stance, and cleared his throat.
“All right.” Davis nodded, biting his lip. “You can go first, then.” He told her, motioning with his hand.
“Good.” Lily nodded back. “I don't appreciate the way you've been treating me since we arrived this morning. I understand that I hurt you by running off like I did, but Sy is right. I didn't have to tell you I was going or why I was going.” She told him, firmly. “I know that you were hurt and worried about me, because of the past trauma of what happened with my parents and my birth, but this and we-” She motioned between herself and Sy.
“Are not my parents and that situation, and you need not to treat it like it is.”
Davis bit his lip and looked at the dark and scuffed wood of the hallway floor, trying to hold back the smile that wanted to pull across his lips. Lily's fire reminded him so much of himself, and in a way, of his Daisy.
“You're right, Lily.” He finally spoke, looking up at her, taking a deep breath.
“I have been a down right jerk to you and Austin, and I'm sorry. I hope you can forgive me for it. I love you so very much, Lily. You are my granddaughter. You are the only thing of my precious daughter I have left and I don't want to lose that, or you. Let alone the beautiful great-grandbaby you have growing inside of you.”
Lily pressed her lips together, her bottom one quivering as her eyes shined with building tears. “I do forgive you.” She blubbered, sniffling at him.
Davis opened his arms to her and Lily rushed into them, colliding with his chest. He smiled and squeezed his arms around her, burying his face in her hair, trying to hold back his own tears. Sy stood beside them, grinning that the two of them had reconciled their differences and became close again, truly hoping that it remained that way.
“Dave?”
Letting out a disappointed huff, he let Lily go and turned towards the sound of his name, finding one of his work hands standing in the open doorway. “What is it?” He asked, lifting a brow at him.
“Mac thinks he found a way to save the York tree.” The hand replied, sheepish eyes darting between the three of them.
Davis looked down at Lily, a tinge of sadness in his eyes.
“I'll see you at dinner.” Lily told him, giving his hand a squeeze and gave him a reassuring look.
He smiled at her, kissing her temple, then followed his worker out the door. Lily turned to Sy and wrapped her arms around his waist, sighed into his chest, a mile-wide smile on her face as she thought about the good vibe she had after what had just transpired with her grandfather. Sy smiled and hugged her back, rubbing his palms up and down her back and resting his chin on top of her head, content and happy.
“Thank you.” She said as they entered her bedroom.
“For what?” He frowned, sitting down on her bed.
“All of this probably wouldn't have happened, if it wasn't for you.” She told him, motioning around her room. “I still would have been cowering at the house in Celina. Too afraid of my own shadow, let alone the outside world. You've given me strength and hope again.” She stood in front of him and cupped his face in her hands, tilting his head back to look up at her.
“Thank you, Austin Syverson.” She whispered, kissing him, softly.
Sy wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into his lap, nuzzling his face into her neck. “It was all you, Angel.” He cooed, his breath warm against her skin. “I just drove you here.” He told her, rubbing his nose against the spot just below her ear.
Lily narrowed her eyes. “You and my grandfather talked about me, didn't you?” She asked, connecting the dots.
“Whatever gave you that idea, sweet lips?” He asked, grinning into her jaw.
“The two of you holed up in his office for forty-five minutes.”
“Oh now, darling.” Sy chuckled, pressing his lips to her jawbone. “My dearest, sweetest, love.”
“Wyatt.”
“Listen to that tone.” Sy exclaimed, rocking back and looking at her. “That's the tone. You sound like such a mama already.” He grinned at her, licking his lips.
“It's so hot.”
“You're turned on by that?”
“Watching your tummy steadily round out with my babe inside of you; knowing my seed filled you like a water balloon.” His smirk turned into something far more sultry as he stared her clothed belly, like he was entranced by a snake charmer. “Thinking about having kids with you, about our kids and you being pregnant with them, is just so fucking sexy and alluring to me.”
“Lord, oh lordy.” Lily chuckled, shaking her head at him.
“I've always wanted a lot of kids.” He blurted out, semi-coming out of his trance. “I know what it's like to be an only child, and it sucks.”
“I know what it feels like too.” Lily agreed, biting her lip. “But, I never thought about having kids. I never thought I'd have kids.”
Sy frowned at her. “Why?”
“Jak doesn't like kids.” She mumbled, glancing down at her lap.
“Ah.” He nodded, understanding. “I love kids.” He smiled at her, softly.
“How many do you want?” Lily asked, tilting her head at him.
“Let's see how many the good Lord gives us.” He replied, gently kissing the corner of her mouth. “There's no rush.” He whispered, resting his chin on her shoulder and closed his eyes, enjoying a quiet moment with her, before they were called down to a dinner of Lily's favorite honey-lemon glazed salmon and asparagus.
“They're sleeping in the same room?” Davis asked, watching Lily and Sy go into her room, after they all said good night to each other.
“Davis, they already have a little one on the way. What are they going to do, make a second one on top of it?” Violet chuckled, shaking her head at her husband, then rolled into their master bedroom.
Sy stepped out onto the front pouch with a cup of coffee in hand, a grin instantly touching his face as he saw Lily on the lawn with Aika. She was wearing a knee length, cotton sundress with a floral design that accentuated her baby bump, the skirt billowing around her thighs in the warm morning breeze, ruffling her shoulder length hair and carrying her laughter back to him on the porch as her and the German Shepard played around on the lush green grass together. He cradled his cup in both hands and leaned on the porch railing to continue watching.
“You watch her, like you're watching through the gates of heaven.” Violet's voice said behind him.
“That's because I am.” Sy replied, not moving or looking away from Lily. “She's my slice of heaven on earth.” He said, eyes brightening as Lily turned and noticed him, smiling at him, and smiled back at her.
“Penny for your thoughts, Bear?” Lily asked, coming up to the porch with Aika.
“A penny is too poor for the thoughts I'm having, Angel.” He replied, grinning at her and pushing off the porch railing.
“I'm going to take my nap.” She said, standing beside him an intense exhaustion washing over her.
“All right.” Sy nodded, brushing the back of his knuckles across her cheek, before leaning in to gently kiss her. “I'll come lay with you.” He whispered, following her inside and upstairs to her room, setting his coffee cup on the table in her room, toed out of his boots and crawled into bed with her; Aika jumping onto the foot of the bed with them.
“Hm, Austin.” Lily whimpered, wiggling, as his hand found its way to her breast and cupped it in his palm, gently squeezing it.
“Does it hurt?” He asked, picking up his head to look down at her, concerned.
“No.” She sighed back, brow ceased. “But, you've been awfully attached to them lately.”
“They're bigger.” He grinned, laying his head back down.
“I'm pregnant with your kid.” She retorted with a snort. “They're prepping to start lactating, so I can start breastfeeding that caveman sized appetite they're going to no doubt have.”
“Both of us.”
“Uh-oh no!” Lily hooted, shaking her head and rolling over onto her back to look at his face. “You are not!”
“Why not?” Sy grinned at her, devilishly licking his lips. “Milk's good for you. Especially breast milk.”
Lily slapped both of her palms to her face, grinning and blushing wildly. “You are so weird.” She giggled, shyly.
“Am I weird, or are you just a sweet sheltered, little, home-schooled girl?” Sy teased back, pressing his hand to her thigh.
Lily looked at him, eyes holding a message that told him she wasn't as amused by his statement as she was, causing Sy to freeze his hand from it's adventure up inside her skirt.
“I'm sorry, babe.” He whispered, biting his lip. “That was too far and not what I meant.” He sighed, kissing her cheek. “I'll let you sleep.” He said, wrapping her up in his arms, feeling like a complete idiot.
But, once Lily was asleep he got up, tiptoeing around the room, before stepping out.
“Is everything all right, Austin?” Violet asked, as she encountered him in the hallway, pulling on his jacket and holding his truck keys.
“Yeah, I just need to go into town.” He replied, giving her a smile and headed out to the truck.
Driving into town, Sy found their store and ran inside, finding everything inside that he had come for, hoping that when Lily woke up from her nap that it would help cheer her up and show her that he was sorry for making such a narrow-minded and dumb-ass comment about how she was raised. He was driving back to the Warren's, when he was stopped at a red light and something caught the attention of his peripheral vision. He stared at it so long, he missed the light changing and the cars behind him started honking and screaming out their windows at him.
“Fuck.” He snapped, stepping on the gas and spinning the steering wheel sharply into a U-Turn, an illegal one at that, but Sy didn't care, as he pulled into the parking lot of the store that had absorbed his attention.
“Sy?” Lily whimpered, sitting up in bed, after not feeling the warmth of his body behind her, and got out of bed in search of him. “Austin.” She called, peeking into the bathroom, but found nothing, before she went downstairs.
“Oh, miss. I was told to give this to you, when you woke up.” the servant said, handing her a note.
“Thanks, Mina.” She replied, taking the note and unfolding it, recognizing Sy's handwriting.
Lily, meet me under your favorite apple tree. - Sy.
“How does he know my favorite apple tree?” Lily frowned at the note, shaking her head, but tucked the note away and went outside.
Lily went out into the northwest orchard of the farm, to where her favorite apple tree was deep in the center of that grove of trees. She remembered going out there often as a girl, especially on cool summer nights, to read by the glow of fireflies or the moon, or if neither of them were out, she would sneak an old oil lamp out of the work barn and take it out to the tree, and read by.
She wondered what Sy wanted with it.
When she was a few yards away from the tree, she noticed a difference amongst the fallen apples and leaves that blanketed the ground, there were oddly shaped, cherry-red leaves. She stopped and examined them, when she realized they weren't leaves at all. They were rose petals. Leading up to her apple tree, that she continued to approach, finding Sy standing beneath it.
“What is this, Austin?” She asked, shaking her head, and motioning to the blue gingham picnic blanket he had laid under the apple tree; the gold plaque staked among its roots told the reader it was a Rall's Genet apple tree, the first planted on the Warren farm, in 1785, by Ambrose Cecil Warren.
“I was an ass.” Sy replied, taking a deep breath and biting his lip. “When you were falling asleep for your nap, and it wasn't right of me, or nice of me, to say what I said to you. I'm so sorry I said it.”
“So, this is my peace offering.” He told her, motioning to the items on the blanket.
Lily chuckled, stepping closer, and seeing her favorite Ben and Jerry's, Brownie Batter Core ice cream, a bag of pretzels, Cherry Punch, Sweet Tart ropes and two bottles of Voss water. “You really didn't have too.” She said, looking up at him, touched at his attempt anyway.
“You know that?”
“Be it as it may, I still want to make it up to you.” He replied, taking her hand and helped her sit down on the blanket, then joined her. “The ice cream might be a little melted. But, I know how much you love it that way.” He chuckled, pulling off the lid to the pint sized container.
“You know me so well.” Lily giggled, taking the white plastic spoon and the pint of ice cream from him. “So, how did you find out this was my tree?” She asked, spooning a mouthful of ice cream into her mouth.
“I remember you telling me about a specific tree on the property.” Sy replied, picking up a bag of shelled, sunflower seeds that he loved to snack on. “I also asked your grandmother.” He grinned, slyly.
“Smooth, Syverson. Smooth.” She chuckled, shaking her head at him.
It was serene and lazy as they sat on the blanket, enjoying their treats.
But, Lily put the lid back on her half-eaten ice cream and turned, laying back to put her head in Sy's lap, closing her eyes to the sound of the breeze rustling through the grass and tree branches over their heads, the chirp of grasshoppers and crickets, the birds singing and twittering, as they nested or flew and their wings fluttered through the warm and humid air. She sighed and smiled softly, her hand resting on her belly. Sy looked down at her and smiled too, ghosting his fingers through her bangs and against her forehead, he loved the soft and peaceful expression on her face and how relaxed her body was, obviously enjoying the tranquility around them, as was he.
He tipped his head back, seeing the little Blue Jay sitting on the branch above them, singing its little heart out and smiled at it, then glanced back down at Lily, his smile growing a little brighter. Lily stirred, not realizing she had dozed off a little bit, until she had felt Sy touch the hand she had on her belly, but he just smiled at her, a strange sparkle in his blue eyes.
“I love you, Lily.” He whispered to her, stroking the top of her hand. “I've loved you for such a very long time.” He told her, biting the corner of his lip “My sweet Angel.”
He grinned, brushing his finger down the bridge of her nose and over her lips, tracing her brows and gently touching her cheek. “There's no one in the world I want to be with. No one I want to bear and battle the world with, other than you, Lily Ana.” He told her, stroking her hair, the tip of his finger following the shell of her ear.
“You've become the purest love of my life and my Battle Buddy.” He told her and curved his hand around hers, lifting it from her belly and to her face.
Lily's face grew slack, her mouth dropping open and her eyes wide as he showed her what was on her hand, what he had put on her finger. “Sy!” She snapped, sitting up. “Wyatt.” She gulped and licked her lips, shocked, and looked at him.
“Austin.” She whimpered, her voice cracking as she stared at the ring on her finger.
“Will you marry me, Lily Ana?” Sy asked her properly, fidgeting nervously, scared out of his wits that Lily would turn him down, and her no would be worse than a gunshot wound to the heart.
It had been an utter impulse that he had been sucked into the sight of that jewelry store on the way back after going to the store, for the ice cream and candy.
At first, he had only meant to look at the engagement rings, but as soon as he saw the one he had just slipped onto her finger, it was like someone had stepped into Sy's body, pointing it out to the jeweler and pulling out his bank card to pay for it; watching him put it in the black velvet box and hold it out to him was surreal. It felt heavy in his pocket as he walked back out to the truck, but not heavy with the regret that he had fallen into the impulse to buy the ring, but heavy with hope that he would find the courage to present it to Lily and she would say yes, heavy with worry that Lily would reject his proposal.
“Yes!” Lily answered a split second later.
“Really!” He snapped back, shocked, but completely delighted.
“Yes, Austin.” She laughed at him. “Yes, yes, yes! I will marry you, you silly Bear!”
“Oh, thank fuck.” Sy let out in a huff, catching her up in his arms. “I am so glad you said yes. I was afraid you would say no.” He said against her cheek.
Lily smiled into his neck. “I would never.” She chuckled, hugging her arms around him. “Not in a million years.” She whispered, kissing his cheek.
“I know it's not much.” He said, touching the round, one-fourth carat diamond setting with his thumb.
“It doesn't have to be, Sy.” She told him, shaking her head. “You are enough.”
Sy smiled at her, cupping the back of her head and pulled her into a deep and tender kiss. Lily melted into him, slowly shifting into his lap and gripping his shoulders, rubbing down on him. Sy smirked into their kiss, wrapping an arm around her waist and pressed them flush together.
“Lily.” He panted against her lips, his eyes dark and teasing.
“I need you so bad now.” She giggled, blushing and shy.
Sy's laugh rang out in the air, grinning. “Let's go back then.”
“I am not having sex in the same house my grandparents are in.” Lily protested, squeezing her knees to the outside of his hips. “That is a big double O negative, Captain Syverson.”
“Is there somewhere else we could go?”
“There's two places, the work barn and the garage, and both are busy this time of day.” She replied, pressing her lips to his throat, impatient and horny; a side effects of her pregnancy.
“All right then.” Sy chuckled.
He lifted her dress just enough to obstruct his access, then pulled open his belt and the button of his jeans, pushing down his zipper and lifted his hips enough to wiggle his jeans and boxers down his thighs to free his hardening cock.
“Your panties.” He huffed, annoyed that the thin material was in their way. “No!” He growled, as she started to push herself up onto her feet to slip her underwear off.
“We can't have sex with them on.” Lily groaned back, impatiently.
“We're not.” He scoffed, fingers curling around the band of her panties and with a loud rip, tore them off of her. “Problem solved, Princess.” He grinned at her, his face dark with desire.
Lily smirked back at him, rubbing against him and spreading her slick juices all over his manhood, making Sy's eyes roll in the back of his head, hands gripping her hips through the fabric of her sundress. Lily reached underneath the skirt of her dress and wrapped her fingers around the hot skin of his hard member, feeling the throb of the thick vein beneath it pulse against her fingers as she stroked him, thin beads of pre-cum coating his shaft and her fingers, making her grasp him firmer.
“Oh, Angel.” Sy panted, licking his lips and resting his head back against the rough bark of the ancient apple tree.
“Not bad for a girl that was sheltered and home-schooled, huh?” She huffed at him, swiping her thumb over the purplish tip of his head and brought it up to her mouth and licked off his juices.
Sy grinned at her though half lidded eyes. “Not at all, Angel. Not at all.” He cooed, then hissed when she wrapped her hand around him again and squeezed, rubbing his weeping tip against her dripping pussy.
“You're teasing me, Lily.”
“Am I?” She purred back, her voice deep and sultry, grinning at him.
“Is this you getting even with me?”
“It's possible.” Lily chuckled, just slipping his tip into her core for a moment, before pulling it out again.
“Oh, Lily Ana.” Sy laughed, his voice a little hoarse, sweat breaking out on his forehead. “You little minx.”
Lily laughed at him. “Coming from the man that would fuck me in any position and place he would, and probably thought he could, in.” She retorted, lifting a brow at him, finally letting his cock enter the canal of her core, sitting in his bare lap.
“All better, Bear?” She cooed at him, pressing her hands to his chest and leaned into him, kissing him.
“I feel like I've corrupted you.” He chuckled against her mouth, rubbing his palms up and down her back, letting her set whatever pace she wanted.
“It's possible.” She replied and gently rolled her hips, taking a deep breath and let it out in a soft moan.
Lily pressed her sweaty forehead against Sy's, wanting to be closer to him, needing to breathe the same air as him, one of her hands slipping behind his head, fingers carding through the short, damp curls at the nape of his neck. Sy held her eyes and bent his knees up a little bit, giving her a little bit of support and shifting his cock inside of her, making her grunt out a delicious moan.
“You always sound so sweet with my cock inside of you.” Sy cooed at her, brushing her wind swept hair out of her face and behind her ears. “My delicious little flower.”
Lily chuckled at him, smirking. “You're a sap.” She huffed, tightening her walls around him, causing him to growl deep in his throat. “You do feel so fucking good though, Bear.” She sighed, licking her lips and bouncing in his lap a little bit faster, while still keeping herself tight around him.
“Lily, I'm gonna come.” Sy grunted, gasping and panting.
He felt the tell-tale tingle in his sack and the pit of his stomach, the way his cock swelled and throbbed against her already taut walls, the wet sounds from their coupling adding to the music of crickets, grasshoppers and birds in the hum of hot and humid air blanketing them, sweat pouring off of them, making almost every inch of their clothing stick and cling to their drenched skin, soaking the fabric. Sy grabbed Lily's hips and thrust up into her, burying himself as deeply as either of their body's would allow him to, his body stiffening as he pumped ribbon after ribbon of hot come into her, the muscles of his stomach spasming with each load.
“Ah, Austin.” Lily cried out, slipping a hand underneath her dress to rub at her clit, giving herself that last bit of stimulation to come, squeezing down on Sy's cock even harder, making him grunt and growl, the muscles in his neck tensing and his face twisting as she milked even more out of him.
“Fuck!” He barked out, breathing between clenched teeth. “Lily!”
Recovering enough, Lily collapsed on top of Sy's chest, listening to his heart thunder in her ear and the soft wheeze to his breathing as it slowly calmed down. Sy sluggishly wrapped his heavy arms around her, turning his red and sweaty face into her damp hair, while Lily watched the diamond on the engagement ring sparkled in the sun, a soft and content smile on her face. So many things were happening that she had given up on; seeing her grandparents again, finding a good and reliable guy, getting married and starting a family. It might all be a bit out of sync, but Lily didn't care, it was still happening and it was happening with Sy.
“Lily?” Sy frowned, alarmed by the painful sounding whimper she suddenly let out and felt her stomach tighten. “What is it?” He asked, sitting up with her.
Lily didn't reply for a moment, instead she reached out and gently cupped his face in her hand, while taking a few deep breaths until the discomfort in her stomach passed. “It's fine, Bear.” She told him, stretching her back. “Just Braxton Hicks. It's perfectly normal at this point.” She sighed.
“Especially after sex.” She assured him, caressing his face with her thumb.
“You're sure?”
“I am.” She nodded, smiling at him. “It's if they last more than two minutes, that we need to worry. But, it was barely thirty seconds.”
Sy nodded at her, but he was only slightly pacified. “I should get you back inside. It's boiling out here.” He said, getting up and pulled her up onto her feet, Sy corrected his jeans, before collecting their picnic stuff, jamming her torn panties into his front pocket and headed back into the house with her.
“Where have the two of you been?” Davis asked as Lily and Sy entered the house.
“We had a little picnic in the orchard.” Lily smiled up at Sy. “Mr. Romantic that Sy is.” She teased him.
“Is that what I think is it?” Violet asked, rolling into the hallway.
Lily froze for a moment, feeling the slickness of her and Sy's love making slowly creeping down the inside of her thigh and felt her heart start to pound, fearing it had become noticeable to her grandmother. But relaxed, when Violet lifted a frail and bony finger, pointing at the ring on her hand instead.
“Uh..” Lily and Sy instantly blushed, grinning like a pair of caught teenagers. “Yeah, it is.”
“You proposed.” Violet grinned at Sy, elated.
“I did.” He smiled, wrapping an arm around Lily's waist, feeling gratified. “It seemed right.” He said, looking into Lily's eyes, softly.
“So, when are you officially tying the knot?” Violet asked, looking between them.
“I don't know.” Lily replied, her eyes still on Sy. “We haven't discussed that yet.”
“We'll get around to talking about it.” Sy nodding back at her. “But, I think, I'm game for a nap right now.”
“Oh, that does sound really good, now that you mention it.” Lily nodded, tired from the heat and their sex. “We should be up in time for dinner.” She said, smiling at her grandparents, then went upstairs with Sy.
“How about a cool shower first?” Sy suggested after they got back upstairs to their room, seeing Lily was still a little sweaty and red. “Wash this sweaty grim off of us and cool off before we nap.”
Lily felt her drying skin and the stickiness between her legs from their combined release. “I think that's a good idea.” She agreed, then followed him into the bathroom.
Sy pulled down the zipper in the back of her dress, then got undressed himself, turning on the shower and making sure it was cool, but not cold, before letting Lily step in first and following in behind her, watching the water wash over her for a few moment. He picked up the bottle of body wash from the shower basket, the scent of white peaches and cream filling the small space as he opened the bottle, moaning softly at the scent he'd become familiar with on her skin of late.
Lily chuckled. “Do I need to change body washes, when we get home, Bear?” She asked, as he started washing the sweaty grim off of her.
“Definitely.” He chuckled, letting her rinse off, then quickly washed himself, not above smelling like peaches too. “Do you have a preference?” Sy asked, after they had settled into bed for their nap.
“Preference for what?” Lily replied, returning to the surface of being awake.
“For what gender you want the baby to be?”
“No.” She shook her head. “But, I do want to continue one thing, if it's a girl.”
“All right.” He nodded. “What is it?”
“The name.” Lily told him. “My great-grandmother's name was Jasmine, my grandmother is Violet, and my mother's name was Daisy..”
“And yours is Lily.” Sy smiled against her shoulder. “All flower themed.”
“Mmhm.” She nodded, starting to tip back off to sleep. “If we have a girl, I want to give her a flower themed name, to continue the tradition.”
“I'm more than all right with that.” He told her, sweet on the idea. “If we have more kids and they're all girls, we'll have a whole flower garden running around the house.” He teased, lightheartedly.
Lily chuckled and snuggled back against him. “The house will smell wonderful.” She teased back, her voice just a faint murmur, before she finally dropped off.
“Is it really time for you to go?” Violet asked, clutching Lily's hands.
“Sadly, it is.” Lily nodded, gulping down a fresh wave of tears.
Lily and Sy had stayed with her grandparents for nearly a week, which wasn't enough for the three of them to catch up and patch five years of absence, but they all knew it was time. The couple had a life back in Celina, that's where they had started to plant their roots and where they wanted to raise their now expanding family.
“You promise to come back and visit?”
“Nothing can ever prevent that from happening again, Mee-Maw. You have my word.” Lily assured her, squatting down in front of her wheelchair.
“I want to meet my great-grandbaby.”
“That, for sure, is going to happen.” Lily chuckled, a couple of tears escaping. “I wouldn't let you miss that opportunity for anything in the world.” She sniffled, starting to lose the battle on her emotions.
“Vi.” Davis whispered, resting his hand on his wife's shoulder. “Lily has appointments she needs to make, so we can meet our sweet great-grandbaby.” He told her, giving Lily a soft smile, his own brown eyes shining with unshed tears.
“Call me, when you stop for the night, so we know you're safe.” Violet said, giving Lily and Sy a stern look.
Even though they had only known him for less than a week, Sy had become family to the Warrens. Violet had become very grandmotherly towards him, while Davis treated him almost like a son. The two men had really bonded over the fact Sy had been in the military, with Davis having served in the U.S Marine Corps during the Vietnam war, before being honorably discharged for a medical injury, at the rank of Master Sergeant. Sy had realized something as he and Lily packed up the truck that morning, he had driven to Virginia with her so shecould reconnect with her family, but in doing so, he had gained a family in more than just Lily, the baby and Aika. It wasn't what he had been looking for, it had all found him, the whole situation, from taking the contract to fix up Lily's place to the moment they were having with her grandparents.
With every aspect and event he found himself in with Lily, it only made him feel more like he belonged.
“You hear me, Austin?” Violet's voice cut through his thoughts.
“Yes, ma'am.” He nodded, smiling and biting his lip, feeling a hard lump of emotion in his throat. “I'll make sure of it.”
“Good.” She smiled at him, then held her arms out to him.
Sy smiled out even bigger and walked back up onto the porch, bending over and carefully closed his muscular arms around her thin body, hugging her gently. “It was good meeting you Ms. Violet.” He whispered into her ear.
“You too.” She whispered back. “And you take care of her and the baby.”
“On my life.” He replied, pulling back.
They winked at each other, chuckling and making Lily and Davis laugh as well. With their good-byes said and everything, including Aika, packed back into the truck, Lily and Sy got in too, waving until they lost sight of Violet and Davis. They weren't down the road very far, when Sy pulled off the side of the road and turned in his seat to face Lily.
“What?” She frowned back at him.
“You all right?” He asked, his eyes reading her.
“I'm fine.” She replied, but he could hear the thickness in her voice.
Sy turned and jerked open his door and moved around the truck and pulled open her door. “Lily.” He said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Lily pressed her lips together for a moment, before taking a deep breath, her chin trembling as her tears crashed into her. Her seat belt wasn't off a moment, before she found herself in his arms and buried against his chest, sobbing into his Metallica t-shirt.
“You'll see them again, Angel.” He murmured into her hair, hands rubbing up and down her trembling back. “I promise, and you'll get to talk to them all the time. Mac even promised to teach them how to use Skype, so you guys can video call.” He told her, trying to soothe her pain and anxiety.
“We'll come back up after the baby's born, so they can meet.” He promised, cupping the back of her head and pressing his lips to her forehead, before wiping away her tears. “Okay?” He smiled at her, feeling the same anxious twist about leaving, but not even close in magnitude that Lily was.
“Okay.” She sniffled, rubbing at her eyes and collecting herself.
“Okay.” He nodded, but neither of them moved, but then Sy looked at her with a strange resolution. “Do you wanna get married?”
“What?” Lily squeaked, frowning at him. “You've already proposed to me, Austin.”
“That's not what I'm asking, Lily.” He replied, licking his lips, the sudden idea brewing inside of his mind. “Do you want to get married, right now?”
“Here?” She asked, looking around them. “In Virginia?”
“Yeah.” He nodded at her, his heart pounding as his adrenaline started to rush through his veins. “We can go back to your grandparents' place, because we'll need witnesses, then go into town and get married. We both know we don't want a massive wedding. I don't have any family I want, or even could, invite and...”
“My grandparents are the only family I have; other than you, Aika and the baby.” She finished his sentence, falling in sync with his thought process.
“So?”
Lily held his eyes for a split moment, then smiled softly at him, and nodded at him. “I think I like that idea, Austin.”
“All right.” He grinned back, kissing her, then ran back around to the driver's seat and hauled ass back to the farm.
“Is everything all right?” Davis asked, coming out of the house as he saw the truck flying up the driveway.
“Everything is fine and dandy.” Lily chuckled at him. “But, Austin and I need your and Mee-Maw's help with something.” She grinned, giggling, with a bubbly air of excited energy.
“What is it?”
Lily looked over at Sy, who grinned at her, then back to her grandfather. “We need two witnesses.” She said, the hint thick in her voice.
A smile instantly touched Davis's lips, understanding Lily's meaning and what she and Sy wanted from him and Violet. “We'll meet you at the Loudoun County courthouse.” He told them, feeling the giddy energy coming off of Lily and Sy infect him on the porch.
“I regret not having an actual wedding ring for you.” Sy commented as the two of them made their way downtown.
“I don't need one, Sy.” Lily told him, reaching out to take one of his hands off the steering wheel. “I told you, you are enough and the ring you already gave me is enough. I don't need anything more than that, Bear.” She said, threading their fingers together.
“Other than maybe...” She grinned at him.
Sy chuckled, bringing their hands up and kissed her fingers. “I'll get you a pretzel, Sweetness.” He grinned, shaking his head. “I feel like I should just buy a pretzel factory or something, the way you're going.” He teased her.
“That would be super nice.” Lily agreed, licking her lips. “Buy the property next door and set it up right there, with the production line ending right into the house.”
It was a good thing they stopped at a red light, because Sy lost it, laughing his ass off at the image of a conveyor belt of freshly baked pretzels coming in through one of the downstairs windows of the house with Lily seated in front of it, just power munching on them with her plump baby belly, happy as all hell. He still had tears in his eyes, after they parked in the county courthouse and were standing out front, waiting for Davis and Violet to show up.
“I'm glad you're loving it up.” Lily giggled at him.
Sy cupped Lily's face in his hands. “My little pretzel.”
“Oh good lord, Wyatt.” She laughed, gripping his wrists. “You're a mess.”
“You're going to marry this mess.” He grinned at her, pulling her closer to him and felt her rounding belly brush his abs.
“I am.” She nodded, smiling up at him. “I wouldn't have it any other way, with anyone else.”
“That's a relief.” Sy replied, feigning shock to know it.
“Lovebirds, no matter where the two of you are.” Violet's voice came as Davis pushed her towards them.
“When in love.” Lily replied, unashamed or moving away from Sy.
“Are we ready for this?” Davis asked, looking around at the group.
“I am.” Lily nodded, looking up at Sy.
“So am I.” Sy replied, smiling down at her.
“We are too.” Violet nodded.
“In we go then.” Davis said, and the small group went inside the courthouse.
“Here.” Lily said, slipping off her ring and handing it to Sy. “Just humor me.” She chuckled softly, when he lifted a brow at her in question.
“All right.” He nodded, slipping it into the front pocket of his jeans.
Going into the courthouse get a marriage license and giving the appropriate documentation they needed for it, then with the license filled out and official, they patiently waited for the couple ahead of them to have their moment getting married with the judge and all, before going into the little courtroom with the judge standing at the front, waiting for them in his official robe and a bible in his hand.
“Hello, I'm Judge Timothy Miller, I'll be marrying the two of you today.” He smiled at Lily and Sy.
“Sounds good to me.” Sy replied, nodding his head politely to the judge.
“Same.” Lily agreed, nervously licking her lips.
“Are these are your witnesses?” He asked, looking to Davis and Violet.
“Yes, sir. They're my grandparents.” Lily explained, smiling over her shoulder at them.
“That's lovely.” Judge Miller smiled at them all, plainly seeing the love everyone had for each other, especially Lily and Sy. “Shall we commence?” He asked, looking between the two of them.
“Yes, please.” They both nodded, feeling their nerves and jitters start to really increase.
“All right, I'll have the two of you face each other.” He said, motioning to space in front of him.
Lily and Sy stood before him, facing each other and holding hands, while staring at each other, Violet and Davis stood off to one side. Sy smiled at Lily, giving her trembling hands a squeeze with his, feeling his own hands shake. But, neither of them were going to back out, they honestly couldn't picture standing up there with anyone else.
They had found a home and a soulmate in each other.
“We are gathered here, on this fine day, to join Austin Wyatt Syverson and Lily Ana Moore together in the holy matrimony, that is marriage.” Judge Miller began speaking, regarding Lily and Sy in turns. “The bonds of marriage are untied with sacred love and the deepest respect, as should one spouse treat the other with that sacred love and respect.”
“Now, do we have rings?” He asked, looking at them with a lifted brow.
“Just hers.” Sy said, going into his pocket and pulling it out.
“All right, put it on her finger and repeat after me.” Judge Miller instructed him.
Sy slipped the ring back onto Lily's finger. “I, Austin Wyatt Syverson, take you, Lily Ana Moore, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forth, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; until death do us part.”
“Same with you.” The Judge said to Lily, nodding his head at her.
“I, Lily Ana Moore, take you, Austin Wyatt Syverson, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forth, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; until death do us part.” She repeated after him, letting out a relieved breath that she hadn't stumbled and missed any of it up.
“It is my pleasure and by the power vested in me, by the power of Loudoun County, in the state of Virginia, to pronounce you, man and wife.” Judge Miller grinned at them.
“Mr. Syverson, you may kiss your bride, Mrs. Syverson.”
“With pleasure.” Sy grinned with immense pride, pulling Lily against him and kissed her, intensely. “I never, in a million years, thought I would ever hear that.”
“What?” Lily asked, walking out of the courthouse with him, hand in hand.
“Mrs. Syverson.”
“I have to agree with you.” She replied, pressing her shoulder against his arm. “I always thought I'd be a Ms. for the rest of my life.”
“I guess you two are really back to Texas now?” Davis asked, coming up behind them with Violet.
“Yeah.” Sy nodded, looking at Lily. “Lily has a fourteen week baby appointment we can't miss.” He explained to them.
“But, we'll come back, when the baby is born so you guys can meet them.” Lily promised them, resting her hand on her belly.
“You better come back here with my great-grandbaby, or you'll have hell to deal with, Missy.” Violet threatened, wagging a bony finger at her, but the playful smirk on her face gave it away.
“You have my word, Mee-Maw.” Lily chuckled, bending over to kiss her on the cheek. “I wouldn't have it any other way. Mama isn't here to meet them, so I have to make sure you do.” She said, straightening up, a sad pang in her chest at knowing her own mother would never meet her grand-baby.
The group was somber for a moment as the fact settled on them, before they parted ways once again. But, Sy and Lily didn't hit the road as soon as they left the courthouse either.
“Where are we going, Bear?” She asked him, confused.
“Well, I promised you a pretzel, for one.” He chuckled at her. “And two, it doesn't seem right.” He said, wiggling the fingers of his left hand.
So, Sy got Lily the pretzel he had promised her, then they stopped off at the jeweler's he had bought her engagement, now wedding ring at, and after browsing for several moments, Lily stopped beside a glass display case, spotting a ring inside of it and pointed at it.
“If that doesn't scream Austin Syverson, then my name isn't Lily Syverson.” She said, staring at it wide eyed.
Sy laughed and crossed over to her, looking into the case at the ring she was pointing at and felt himself freeze, as it hit him, like seeing hers had. “I'm in total agreement with you. Both on the ring and your name.” He said, seeing the tungsten carbide ring.
“That's the one.” He told the jeweler, nodding his head at the ring.
“Fits like a glove.” Lily said, watching Sy slip it onto his left ring finger.
“Or in this case, a wedding ring.” He chuckled at her, turning it around his finger.
“Neither of us expected this, when we were driving out here.” She said, going back out to the car with him.
“Actually, I had been considering proposing to you for a while.” Sy confessed, finally getting them onto the highway back home to Celina. “Even before we found out about the baby.”
Lily twisted in her seat to face him, face slack in surprise. “Seriously!”
“Yep.” He nodded, grinning. “You're home to me, Lily. You've been a home to me for such a long time, before we slept together that night in the barn and everything.” He licked his lips and shifted in his seat. “I thought, maybe, even if we didn't have that sort of connection, we could still at least take care of each other and keep each other—company.” He told her, drumming on the steering wheel with his thumbs.
“I have a lot of baggage with my time in the military and people have a lot of trouble dealing with that and rarely stick around because of it. I honestly expected you to run me off that day on the porch, when I nearly took your head off.” He explained, babbling at this point.
“But you didn't. Even then, I expected you to tiptoe or be afraid of me.”
“But, I'm not afraid of you, Austin. I have no reason to be afraid of you or tiptoe around you.” Lily told him, hurt that he thought she would get rid of him or be scared of him, because of the things he can't really control. “Even when I first saw you, I wasn't afraid of you. You've never given me a reason to be. I sure as hell would never blame you for having PTSD for being in multiple war zones, as many times and as long as you had been.”
“I admit, if you ever did give me a reason to believe you'd hurt me, I would have told you to piss off.” She told him, honestly.
“I would have left long before that, if I thought I would do something to hurt you.” He said, looking over at her, the fear that he would do something, was evident in his eyes.
“I know that.” She whispered. “But, you're not, Austin. Not then. Not now. Not ever, and I'm not going anywhere either. I'm staying right with you, I'll always be there for you, especially in those moments.” She promised him, leaning over and kissing him on the cheek.
“We're stuck together.”
“Now and forever.” Sy grinned, happy and relieved.
“Plus a day.” Lily giggled, laying her head on his shoulder.
“I want to make a tradition of our own.” Sy said, breaking the quiet of the truck. “If we have a boy.”
They were only a few hours from being back home in Celina and felt the peacefulness of being so close to their own place again, their own space and bed.
“Okay.” Lily replied, settling her eyes on him.
“So, the girls on your mother's side of the family were named after flowers, right?”
“Correct.” She nodded back.
“Well, I was named Austin, because my parents met in Austin.”
“Oh, don't tell me you want to name our potential son, Celina.” Lily giggled, teasing him.
“Gods, no.” Sy laughed back, shaking his head at her. “But, I do want to name any would-be sons after cities. Like, Dallas.” He explained to her.
“Austin Jr.” Lily chuckled back. “But, I like that idea.”
“Can I make one more suggestion?” He inquired, lifting a brow at her.
“Of course.”
“If we do have a daughter, I know we want to give her a flower themed first name, but can I pick her middle name?”
“Of course, do you have one in mind?” Lily asked, tilting her head at him.
“I do.” Sy nodded at her, his blue eyes getting a far off look.
“What is it?”
“Let's find out, if it's a girl first.” He said, shaking his head and clearing his vision. “Then, I'll tell you.”
“Okay, keeper of secrets.” She chuckled.
“Son of a—“
Lily paused as she carried the laundry basket up the stairs, hearing Sy's muffled curse from the guest room, turned nursery.
“What happened to good ol' fashioned, pure American made furniture?” He grumbled around his smarting thumb.
Chuckling and setting the basket down, Lily went down to the nursery. “Is that a grizzly Bear I'm hearing?” She asked, her voice light and playful as she smiled at him.
“Why did we have to buy the baby stuff from IKEA?” He asked, scowling at the mostly put together changing table.
“Because, their baby stuff is adorable.” She giggled at him, moving over to him, to check his smashed appendage.
Sy huffed, but let her take his hand in hers, watching her quietly and gently fuss over his swollen and multi-colored thumb. “If you like them, then it doesn't matter.” He sighed, frowning at the other unboxed baby furniture that was in the room with them.
“I do like them.” Lily nodded, assured he hadn't done any real damage to his hand. “That's why I got them. It goes with our neutral theme, since we don't know the baby's sex yet.” She told him, kissing his thumb, with a mischievous smile.
“Then, I'll get it done.” He replied, cupping her face and pulled her in, kissing her gently.
“Bob the Builder can eat his heart out.” She chuckled, kissing him back. “He's got nothing on Captain Syverson.” She proclaimed proudly, before standing back up and retrieving her laundry basket, to put away the clean clothes she'd spent all morning washing, in the master bedroom.
When she finished putting the clothes away, Lily paused in the middle of the bedroom, tapping her foot and chewing on her bottom lip as a sudden idea brewed inside of her mind. It wasn't a completely new idea, but the evolution of it was. Turning the upper half of her body towards the open bedroom door, listening to the bumps and curses coming from the nursery down the hall.
“Sy!” She called out to him, then winced hearing a crash and another curse.
“Yeah, babe?” He answered, sighing.
“You wanna distraction?” She asked, biting the corner of her lip and feeling bad.
Sy appeared in the nursery doorway, his bruised fingers pressed to his chest. “I would love one, Angel.” He replied, giving her a grateful, but pained expression. “What do you have in mind?”
Lily stepped into their closet for a moment, before coming back out and holding up her professional digital camera, a Panasonic Lumix, for him to see, and Sy frowned at her, head tilting in question.
“Baby book.” She smiled at him.
“What's that gotta do with me?” He asked, blinking at her.
“You silly Bear.” Lily giggled at him. “You've gotta be in the book too! You are the Daddy.”
“Okay.” Sy nodded, biting his lip and glancing around. “What do you want me to do?”
“Let's go downstairs.” She said, taking her camera and headed downstairs with Sy following after her. “This'll be a good place.” She decided, stopping in the dining room, where there was a clear wall by the bay window, where there was a lot of light.
Lily paused for a moment, then disappeared into the kitchen, coming back with a little whiteboard she would write little notes on, doctor's appointments, deadlines or anything else she and Sy needed to remember. Sy watched her bustle about, putting her idea into motion. Erasing the writing on the whiteboard, Lily wrote fourteen weeks on it, then carefully hung it up on the wall, then planted her hands on her hips and left the room again, making Sy chuckle at her.
“Perfectionist.” He teased, when she came back, with a short tripod.
“To the end.” She giggled back, setting the tripod up on the dining table and connected the camera to it. “All right, now.” She approached Sy, resting her hands on him and turned him sideways.
“Now, don't move.”
“As you wish, Angel.” Sy grinned, planting his feet in place.
“That's a good Bear.” She grinned back, patting him on the chest, then removed her shirt.
“Well, ya gotta see my tummy.” Lily giggled at him at his lifted brow.
“Well, if you're taking your shirt off, I'm taking mine off.” He replied, yanking his blue tank top off over his head.
“What, for your six babies?” Lily teased him, touching his fur covered abs.
“They're sympathy babies.” Sy chuckled at her.
“Sympathy babies?” She roared with laughter.
“You know what a sympathy pregnancy is?” He asked, grinning at her. “It's that, just six mini ones.”
“Well, that's the fast way to have a bunch of kids.” Lily joked back, thoroughly amused at his sympathy babies.
“Okay, back to what we were doing.”
“Right, what now, Mama?”
“I'm going to stand here.” She said, moving in front of him and resting her back against his chest. “And you're going to put your hands here.” She reached back, gripping Sy's wrists and moved them around to the front of her, so his hands cradled her growing baby bump.
“Like this?” Sy asked, making small adjustments.
“Yes, perfect.” Lily nodded, holding a small remote in her hand that would allow her to snap the photo, but before she could press the button, Aika came charging in and barked at them. “Oh my, how could I be so rude to forget you, Aika.” She cooed at the German Shepherd.
“Aika, sit.” Sy snapped his fingers at her and she instantly sat down before them, staring up at them, ears erect and head cocked to the side.
“That's so perfect.” Lily grinned at Aika. “So, I'm going to look at my belly and you can look at me.” She instructed Sy.
“Way ahead of you, Angel.” Sy replied, already looking at the back of her head, and just before she pressed the button on the camera's remote, he kissed her hair. “Let's see it.” He said, moving away from her.
Lily grabbed the camera off the tripod and pulled it up on the display screen, instantly grinning at it. The image of Sy cradling her baby bump, while she looked down at it, and kissing the back of her head, with Aika looking curiously up at her two and a half humans. She couldn't wait to add it to the baby book she had bought several weeks before and started putting together.
“You want to do a few more?” She asked, looking up from the camera.
“You're damn right I do.” Sy nodded, excited at the thought of doing an activity with Lily and anything that included their baby, still in her belly or not.
“Do you have any suggestions?” She inquired, tilting her head at him.
He bit his lip, then lifted a finger at her and left the room, coming back several minutes later with a worn, Army green shirt with two patches on the short sleeves, one for the U.S Army Special Forces and the other was the custom Special Forces patch for the team he was the leader of.
“I wore this a lot, while on tour.” He explained to her, looking at the garment in his hands.
Lily smiled at him, seeing and feeling how shy he was as he tried to explain his thoughts for what he wanted for a few shots. “I like that idea, Bear.” She assured him.
“Yeah?” Sy replied, lighting up.
“I do.” Lily nodded, eyes sparkling at him. “Just tell me what you want me to do.”
“Okay, um.” He looked around, he wasn't as good as Lily with setting up photo shots, but he had an idea in his head. “Here, put it on.” He said, handing her his shirt.
“All right.” Lily took his shirt and slipped it on.
“Can you..” He paused, biting his lip and glancing around. “Can you sit the camera up on the coffee table, like you had it here?” He asked, motioning to the tripod still sitting on the dining table.
“I very much can.” Lily nodded, grabbing the tripod and her camera, taking them into the living room and set them up on the coffee table as he asked.
“What next?”
“Lay down on the couch, sorta propped up on the arm.”
Nodding, Lily did as he asked and Sy fussed with the camera for a moment, making sure the shot would be wide enough, then moved around the coffee table, slipping onto the couch with her and positioning himself so he was between her legs, his face level with her belly.
“You have the remote to the camera?” He asked her.
“I do.” She nodded, grinning at him and held the remote up for him to see.
“Okay, good.” He gave her a short nod. “I'm gonna kiss your gorgeous belly and I want you to snap it.”
“As you wish, Bear.” Lily chuckled, gently patting his cheek.
Sy lowered his head, a soft blush on his bearded cheeks, that Lily hoped she could get in on the camera, and gently pressed his lips to her belly through the fabric of his old Army shirt. Lily waited a moment, admiring and savoring it for herself, before actually taking the photo of him doing it.
“How about one for just you and I?” Lily suggested, when Sy sat back up. “Not for the baby book, just me and you.”
“Oh?” Sy grinned, his brow going up in a suggestive manner.
Lily licked her lips and nodded her head. “Where are your dog tags?”
“My dog tags?”
“Well, I certainly don't have any.” She chuckled at him.
“Huh, I think they're upstairs in one of the boxes I brought over when I officially moved in.” He replied, brow creasing as he tried to recall which of the boxes it was he might have put them in.
“Then, go find them.”
“All right then, Miss.” He replied, getting up off the couch and going back upstairs.
“That's Mrs. Thank you!” Lily hollered after him, shaking her head and stood up, grabbing her camera and the tripod, then going upstairs after him.
“What is that beautiful brain thinking?” Sy asked, pulling out a box from the closet and setting it on their bed as she came into the room.
“When you find your dog tags, I'll tell you.” She smiled at him, setting the tripod and camera down on the dresser across from their bed.
“Ah-ha!” He let out triumphantly, smiling and pulled out his dog tags from the third box for Lily to see the two thin tags dangling from their chain, rimmed by black rubber to keep them from making noise, when they hit together.
“Nope.” He shook his head at her, pulling the dog tags away as she reached out for them. “Tell me what you want them for first, little lady.”
“I'm going to get naked and they'll be the only thing I'm wearing.” She told him, bluntly.
Sy gulped, his eyes widening at the thought. “Sold.” He squeaked, handing them to her.
Lily removed her clothing and slipped Sy's dog tags over her head, resting between the swell of her breasts and the top of her sloping belly. “Get in bed, Syverson.” She said, motioning to their bed with her head.
“As you wish, Syverson.” He chuckled at her. “You want me to get naked too?” He teased her.
“If you wanna.” Lily chuckled back, following close behind him.
“I do.” He smirked and pushed his shorts down, kicking them aside and got into bed, resting back against their pillows and the headboard.
Lily crawled into bed with him, nuzzling herself between his legs, making him moan a bit as her ass rubbed against his semi-flaccid cock. She hooked Sy's feet around, so she sat in the bowl in the middle of them and rested back against his chest, then had him rest his head on her shoulder, with one of his hands cupped the side of her stomach and she rested her hand on top of his there. She gasped softly, feeling his other hand gently cup one of her sore breasts, his face gently nuzzling her neck with a soft smile.
“I love you.” He murmured.
“I love you too, Bear.” She cooed back, resting comfortably against him, and snapped the shot. “It'll be better, when my stomach is bigger.”
“Oh, I really can't wait for that.” Sy admitted, rubbing his calloused hands over her stomach. “I can't wait for the moment when I can put my hands on your belly and feel the baby move against my palms.” He told her, fantasizing about it.
“I feel little flutters every now and then.” Lily replied, resting her head back against his shoulder. “But, nothing I can share with you yet.” She told him, comfortable in their weird little huddle.
“One day soon, Angel.” He whispered into her ear, hugging his arms around her and closing his eyes.
“Sy!” Lily screamed, wiggling and panting. “Austin! Jesus Christ.” She huffed as Aika barked and paced around her.
Sy came pounding down the stairs, hearing her frantic yelling from where he was upstairs, still working in the nursery. “Lily!” He yelled, tearing into the living room, out of breath and scared out of his mind.
“What's wrong?” He asked, staring down at her as she laid on her bright purple yoga mat on the living room floor, she had gotten into pregnancy yoga, after trying it during one of the parenting classes they attended. “Is it the baby?” His eyes searched every inch of her body, watching Aika shove her nose underneath Lily's hips, sides and in the nook of her neck, making her wiggle even more and squeal.
“The baby is fine, Austin.” Lily huffed, out of breath and going limp on the yoga mat. “It's me, that's the problem.” She scowled, her face bright red.
Sy's face didn't change. “What is it, Angel?”
Lily bit her lip and huffed again, glancing away from him, knowing what was coming next out of him. “I can't get up.”
And there it fucking was.
Sy's head reared back and his laugh roared through the house like a boom of thunder, startling the daylights out of Aika, who barked directly into Lily's ear and bolted for the new doggy door in the kitchen and vanished into the backyard. His whole body shook as he continued to laugh at her for not being able to get up from her mat, even starting to wheeze.
“Good lord, Wyatt!” Lily growled at him.
“You're like a turtle!” He howled, bending forward, tears rolling down his cheeks. “Should I call PETA first? I don't want to get in trouble for endangering wildlife.” He cackled, rubbing her now pronounced belly.
“The only thing endanger is your sex life!” Lily threatened him. “Now, help me up! Your kid is squishing my bladder!” She begged, holding her hands out to him and desperately wiggling her fingers.
“All right! All right.” He chuckled, grabbing her hands and carefully pulled her up onto her feet. “Waddle faster, my little submarine!” He shouted after her, starting to laugh all over again.
“I hate you!” She shouted over her shoulder, just making it to the hall bathroom.
“You ready, Bear?” Lily asked, squeezing Sy's hand as they followed the nurse back to the exam room.
“As I can be, Angel.” He replied, taking a deep breath. “As I can be.”
It was Lily's twenty-third week baby appointment and the moment of truth, when they found out the gender of their baby. They were both excited and nervous about finding out, having spent the last two weeks scouring names of cities and flowers and making their own lists for names if they had a girl or a boy, to then narrow down, once they did find out what gender they were having; and today was that day.
“Good morning.” Dr. Evers smiled as she came into their exam room. “How are parents and baby doing today?” She asked, sitting down on a stool.
“We're doing really well.” Lily smiled back at her, giddy. “Ready to find out the gender.” She said, glancing over at Sy.
“I bet you're just chomping it to bits to find out.” Dr. Evers chuckled, doing a quick regular exam of Lily, before setting up the ultrasound.
“I love hearing that sound.” Sy said, unconscionably as the baby's heartbeat filled the room.
“It's a precious sound.” Evers agreed, smiling over at him.
“Amen.” Lily nodded, gripping Sy's hand and staring at the screen.
“Let's see if I can get a better position.” Dr. Evers said, moving the transducer around Lily's belly, spreading more of the warm jelly with it, then went quiet for a few minutes, typing a few things on the keyboard.
“Is everything okay?” Sy asked, nervously.
“Everything is perfectly fine.” She smiled at him. “Just making a few measurements.” She assured him, before moving the transducer again. “Ah, there you are.” She grinned brightly, finally getting the right angle on the screen that she needed to tell her what gender the Syverson's baby was.
“Do you want to know right now, or do you want me to write it down and you can look when you get home?” She asked, regarding the two of them.
Lily and Sy looked at each other, a silent conversation going on between them for a long moment before Lily looked back at Dr. Evers and smiled, nervously, at her and nodded her head.
“Now, please.”
Nodding her head back at them, then pointed to the screen. “If you look right there.” She outlined what she was indicating. “You can just make out what it is. So, I'm happy to tell you, you are expecting a healthy baby girl.”
“A girl.” Sy echoed back, his voice weak with emotion and his eyes glued to the screen. “I have a daughter.”
“A daughter, Bear.” Lily grinned at him, reaching up and wiping away the silent tears that were starting to fall down his face. “We have a daughter, Sy.”
Sy wrapped his arms around Lily and hugged her for dear life, burying his face into her neck, soaking the shoulder of her shirt with his tears. “Thank you.” He sniffled and hiccuped. “Thank you.”
“We did it together, Sy.” Lily replied, emotional as well. “We both did this.”
“You guys are doing great and the baby is doing amazingly.” Dr. Evers complimented them, a bit choked up as well. “I'll have you set up your next appointment and you know to contact me, if anything happens.”
“Thanks, doc.” Sy smiled at her.
“It's my pleasure.” She assured him.
“All right, Bear. You said, if we had a girl you had a middle name for her, now out with it.” Lily said, as they drove back home.
Sy cleared his throat, still an emotional wreck that they were having a daughter. “Imogene.”
“Imogene.” Lily repeated, blinking at him. “Why Imogene?” She asked, tilting her head at him.
He was quiet for a long while, trying to get a handle on an old emotional lump that was trying to push up alongside the one already in his throat. “I want her to have the middle name, Imogene,” He started to explain, as they reached their driveway.
“Because, it was my mama's name.” He told her, softly.

“You've been getting here more early than usual.” Lily commented, handing Sy his usual morning coffee as he arrived on the property. “You fly here like Superman or something?”
She teased him as she sat down on the brand new porch swing that Sy had built with the scrap lumber from the porch and siding.
Sy laughed and leaned back against the porch railing. “No, I've been staying at the Sunway Motel in Celina.” He confessed, crossing his ankles. “I've been too tired to drive back to Austin most days, I don't want to fall asleep at the wheel or anything. So, I've been crashing there to keep it safe, and it just makes getting back here a sight easier, than a three-hour drive.” He told her, shaking his head.
“One-way.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Lily frowned, offended to hear it.
“Well, I don't want you paying that out of your pocket.” He replied, frowning back at her. “It's not a big deal for me.”
“I do technically pay you to stay there, Sy.” Lily answered, shaking her head at him.
“True.” He nodded, staring at the tips of his boots. “But, I also have a Military paycheck.” He informed her. “Again,” He sighed, pressing his lips together. “I didn't want you paying for something I can pay myself. You buy enough things as is.”
“Well, I would have offered to pay for it.” She started, folding her legs. “But, I also would have offered you one of my guest rooms.”
Sy blinked at her, he hadn't expected that from her, it seemed a bit toward. That thought made him paused, blinking at himself. Did Austin 'Fuck and eat you out til you can't walk' Syverson just have an abstinent thought.
Holy fuck, I did! He thought, staring at her.
And it wasn't because Sy wasn't attracted to her, because he very much was.
She was a beautiful young lady. The way her eyes lit up, every time she smiled, even when she was being shy. She came just to his shoulder. Her hair looks so silk and soft, that it took everything in Sy's power not to reach out and caress his fingers through it to find out just how pillow-y soft it was. She was dainty, but had curves in all the right places, for Sy to hold onto her. He bit the inside corner of his lip, thinking about gripping those hips of hers and kneading them in his big mitts, to rub up against that plump, heart shaped ass, to grab or bury his face in those matching breasts.
Sy cleared his throat and took a deep gulp of his cooling coffee, praying his growing erection wasn't too obvious to her.
What a way to ruin it, Syverson. He berated himself, trying to rein himself back in.
“Anyway,” She said, breaking the silence and getting up off the swing. “The offer stands, if you want it.” She told him, and went back inside.
He stayed there long after she had gone upstairs to her office to start her own workday, even after his coffee cup was empty. He turned around, setting the empty cup on the railing and watched the sun slowly climb higher into the sky, before sighing and getting back to work, siding the back portion of the house; thinking he might start working on the roof next. Since Spring was due soon and the weatherman said it would be a cold and rainy one.
“I'm going to be late tomorrow.” Sy said, that afternoon.
“Okay.” Lily smiled, taking up his empty lunch plate and turned towards the sink. “Everything okay?” She asked, turning the faucet on to do them and the ones from breakfast.
“Everything's great.” Sy smiled, leaning back in his chair and grinning.
“I've never seen you smile so big, since we met.” She teased him, chuckling.
“I made a friend in Baghdad.” He explained, giddy. “She's finally over here in the States, so I need to pick her up at the airport.” He was excited about getting Aika again, even more so for Lily to meet her.
“I want you to meet her.” He added.
Lily's stomach clenched hearing him talk about whoever she was, a bit down to find out he apparently had someone special in his life. “I look forward to it.” She said, focusing on the plate in her hand.
“Great!” He beamed, getting up from the table. “I'm sure the two of you will be two peas in a pod!” He said, heading out the back door to finish his work.
“Totally.” Lily sighed, frowning to herself.
The next day, Lily was a complete wreck about meeting Sy's friend.
She had tossed and turned all night, barely getting any sleep as she kept thinking about the meet. She knew the woman was going to be gorgeous, why wouldn't she be, if Sy had been so excited about her being in the States and she was able to capture the attention of his ocean blues. Eventually, Lily got out of bed, tired of not finding a comfortable position and peace of mind to fall asleep. Besides, knowing her luck, she'd be subjected to dreaming about meeting the lady and all her, super model glory.
So, she padded down to her office and flipped on her computer, deciding to get her day started early and finish the few projects she had going on with a couple of clients. But, not even that helped her forget about the situation, if anything it made it worse, her leg impatiently bouncing to the tune of her agitation and self-pity. Running a hand through her hair for the hundredth time, before putting it back up, yet again, she huffed and stood up, pacing the floor of her office, from the window to the door, and back, biting her fingernails and mumbling to herself.
“Why would you even have the remotest chance with a guy like Austin Syverson?” She berated herself, yet again. “Good lord, look at the man! He's an actual man and you've never even kissed a boy. He's the whole package and you're just full of baggage. This is definition of friend zoned, and you bloody well know it!”
Sy had driven back to Austin after leaving Lily's place the night before. He was so excited to retrieve Aika from quarantine. It felt like an age since they last saw each other, but not as long as it might have felt, if he hadn't had Lily for company and the work on the farm to do, day in and day out.
“Fuck,” He huffed, drumming his thumbs on the steering wheel. “I really hope the two of them get along.” He mumbled to himself, fidgeting in his seat. “Maybe, I should have told her about Aika. What if she's allergic to dogs, or doesn't even like them?” He questioned, suddenly doubting himself. “I know she likes horses, but a dog isn't a horse, and the horse isn't on her property.” He glanced at his mobile phone in the passenger seat, questioning if he should just call Lily and tell her he's bringing his dog to the farm, for her to meet.
“No.” Sy shook his head, brushing it off. “It'll be fine. This will be great! They'll get along perfectly and it'll be a happily ever after.” He nodded, pushing himself to be positive as he pulled into the facility to pick Aika up. “Captain Austin Syverson, here for my dog, Aika.” He told the lady at the front desk, then signed the release paperwork, while they brought her out to him.
“Hey, girl!” Sy called, as Aika charged for him. “Oh, I've missed you so much, bug!” He said, rubbing her erect ears and scratched down her back, making her back leg go wild. “I've got someone special I want you to meet.” He said, getting the German Shepherd into his truck. “You're going to love her.” He smiled at Aika, who licked his scruffy cheek.
“And she's probably going to spoil you rotten.” He chuckled, pulling out of the parking space.
“Oh shit.”
Lily gulped seeing the kicked up dust cloud on the driveway, as Sy's truck approached the house and felt her heart stop, knowing at any moment, she would be meeting his special lady in a matter of minutes. She had been trying all morning to put on a brave and supportive face, not wanting to make herself look like a fool in front of them. “I can't do this.” She gulped, running into the bathroom upstairs and vomited into the bowel several times, before quickly brushing and rinsing her mouth out.
“Afternoon, Lily!” Sy yelled, getting out and giving her a wave as she stepped out onto the porch, he was positively beaming. “You ready to meet her?” He asked, gripping the handle of the passenger door.
“Yep!” She called back, forcing a smile. “As I can be.” She mumbled under her breath as Sy opened the door.
A bark filled the humid air and a big German Shepherd jumped out of the truck, jumping on Sy a few times, before noticing Lily and bee-lining for her.
“Oh.” Lily gasped, surprised that Sy's special lady, was a dog. “Hey.” She grinned at Aika, bracing herself has Aika put her paws on her chest. “Aren't you a beauty.” She said, scratching her erect ears and relieved beyond all belief.
“See, I told you the two of you would get along.” Sy said, stepping up on the porch, relieved as well.
“That you did.” Lily agreed. “What's her name?” She asked, looking up at him.
“Aika.” He replied, scratching Aika all over. “I found her as a stray during my last deployment, she was just a pup. So, I took her in and took care of her. She's been stuck in Quarantine since before I got back, and they just released her today.” He explained as Aika bolted off the porch and zoomed around the front yard.
“You don't mind me having her here, do you?” He asked, biting the corner of his lip.
“Are you kidding?” Lily laughed, watching Aika disappear in the tall grass. “She's more than welcomed here.” She assured him, with a sweet smile. “Any time.”
“She's not really used to grass.” Sy laughed, as Aika attempted to pee on every blade she could. “You might get a few holes as well.” He added, knowing the Shepherd's like to dig.
“Please, I doubt anyone will notice.” Lily giggled, looking around the neglected yard.
Sy went to work on his latest project on the property and Aika spent most of the day running around the land, investigating what Sy was up to or lounging on the floor in Lily's office upstairs. Lily sighed and rubbed her face as the phone downstairs in the kitchen rang. She pushed back in her office chair and carefully stepped over Aika, to pad down the small set of stairs that led directly into the kitchen from the upstairs.
“Hello?” She chimed, pressing the receiver to her ear with her shoulder, waving at Sy as he passed the kitchen window and rounded the side of the house, then frowned, when no one answered her greeting. “Hello?” She repeated, a little bit louder. “Are you there?” She asked, checking to make sure the call was connected properly.
“What's wrong?” Sy frowned, stepping into the kitchen as the receiver fell to the floor at their feet.
“Nothing.” She squeaked, quickly bending to pick it up. “Just being clumsy.” She told him, hanging the phone up.
“Well, who was it?” He asked, tilting his head at her strange behavior.
“I don't know.” She replied, shrugging her shoulders and ran a hand through her hair, not turning around to look at him. “They never said anything. Must have been a wrong number or something.” She told him, heart thundering in her chest. “I need to finish my work.” She said, then rushed upstairs, leaving Sy staring up after her.
“I talked to your neighbor, Billie Marlowe.” Sy said, tugging a cloth out of his back pocket and wiped his face and head with it.
“Oh?” Lily replied, stirring a bit of honey into her tea.
“Yeah, he said, his daughter, Skylar, would be competing in a barrel racing competition this Sunday, in Dallas.” He told her, studying her carefully. “I was wondering, if you had thought about, maybe, going with me?” He asked, licking his lips.
Lily froze, the container of liquid creamer hovering over her steaming cup as she stared across the table at him, eyes wide. “I-”
“Oh, come on.” Sy pressed, brow creasing. “It's my treat. I'll drive and everything. It'll do you some good to leave the house.” He tried coaxing her. “Just for an hour or two.”
Lily continued to stare at Sy, her hand growing sweaty around the plastic container, before she set it down, her shoulders slumping as she did. “All right. Only for a few hours, then we come back. I have a deadline.”
Sy burst into a grin, his blue eyes bright. “Great.” He said, rubbing his hands together. “It doesn't start until eight and her competition doesn't start until eight-thirty. So, we'll have plenty of time.” He told her, excited to go to the fair with her.
Three days later, Sy got Lily in the car and they drove forty-five minutes from Celina to Dallas. The first few minutes in the car was quiet, until Luna's nerves got the best of her.
“When was the last time you went to a fair?” She asked, looking at him.
“Oh, man.” Sy huffed, frowning out the windshield as he considered it. “I think I was sixteen, it was an end of the year thing for my Junior year at high school. I didn't go to my Senior one, since I was getting ready for basic training.” He told her.
“What about you?” He asked, glancing at her.
“Never.”
“You've never been to one?” Sy snapped, shocked.
“Nope.” She shook her head at him.
“Not even for school?”
“I was home schooled.” She explained. “My dad thought they were a suck and waste of money.”
“That's the point.” Sy laughed, shaking his head. “Wasting money on artery clogging food and probably unsafe rides. It's a rush, but mostly from all the sugar.” He grinned at her, amused.
“You'll love it, I swear.”
“I'll take your word for it, Captain.” Lily smiled back, hoping he didn't see how freaked out she was.
They finally reached the fair grounds and a place to park, Sy got them all access bracelets, so giddy as they entered the fair grounds. Lily took several deep breaths as the crowd around them thickened and stuck close to Sy. She really didn't want to ruin Sy's fun at the fair, he had been jabbering about it since she agreed to go with him, telling her about the all fun rides and food. He was like a little boy, reliving his first fair experience, and she knew it had been over ten years since he had been to one. So, she put on a brave face and tried to smile, every time he glanced at her.
Which was every few seconds.
Sy and Lily got on several rides to kill the half hour until the barrel-racing competition started under one of the big tents set up in the huge field. She rather enjoyed the Ferris wheel, just her and Sy in one seat, spaced out from everyone else on the ride. She did think she was going to throw up on the sudden drop ride, but managed to keep it down, making Sy laugh at her as he saw her face from the corner of his eye as the two of them got off the ride.
“You all right?” He chuckled, resting his hand on the small of her back.
“I think, my stomach is somewhere between my brain and my toes.” She chuckled, despite herself.
“It'll even out again.” Sy laughed with her, rubbing her back.
“Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls,” the fair announcer came over the intercom system throughout the fair. “The Barrel-Racing Competition is due to start in ten minutes, in tent number six! So, find your seats now!” He informed the herd of fair-goers.
“Oh, we should head out that way.” Sy said, pulling out the little fair map and directed them towards the tent. “Why don't you find us a place to sit and I'll go get us something to munch and sip on.” He told her, at the tent's entrance.
“Sy..”
“It'll take two minutes.” He told her, squeezing her shoulder, then disappearing into the crowd that was trying to funnel into the tent.
“Fuck, Austin.” Lily gulped, starting to tremble as she turned into the tent and looked for somewhere to sit, before finding a place in the second row, near the exit.
Sy weaved around the countless people in the main walkway of the fair, before spotting a food vendor with something he thought Lily would love to try out and headed that direction, to standing in line. He was only in the line for a moment, when he felt a tap on his shoulder and turned around to see who it was, breaking out into a smile.
“Mr. Marlowe.” He greeted the farmer, sticking his hand out to the other man.
“Please, just call me Billie.” Marlowe replied, smiling up at Sy and shook his hand.
“Sy.” Sy answered. “You must be excited to see your little girl compete.” He said, as they stood side by side and progressed through the line.
“That I am.” Billie beamed, like the proud papa he was. “I am surprised at you though.” He added, pulling off his John Deere hat, ran his hand through his short, salt and pepper hair, and rubbed the over-tanned skin of his neck.
“Why's that?” Sy frowned, shaking his head.
“I saw Ms. Lily with you.” Billie replied as they got to the counter. “My farm has been in my family for four generations. I knew the couple that lived at Ms. Lily's place, when I was a lad. They passed away and their kids didn't want to be farmers, so they sold the place and Ms. Lily bought it a few years back. In that time, I have never seen her leave the property. The closest I've ever seen was when she fetches the mail, and she does that in a jiffy.” He laughed, stepping up to one of the two cashiers, while Sy went to the other.
“What do you mean?” Sy frowned, then gave the cashier an order for two elephant ears, a coke for himself and a Dr. Pepper for Lily.
“Oh.” Billie frowned, realizing Sy had no clue.
“'Oh', what?” Sy pressed, annoyed.
“You don't know about Ms. Lily being Agoraphobic?” Billie asked slowly, blinking at Sy with a shocked look. “I thought you knew. Practically everyone in Celina knows about it. My boy, Travis, who works at the Celina supermarket, even gets her groceries for her and delivers them, and everything.”
Sy floundered, his mouth opening and closing for a moment. “I didn't.” He sighed, clearing his throat. “I just thought she was a home-body.” He said, shaking his head. “Well, I suppose she is a home-body, it's just a bit more complicated than that.”
He felt silly, all of the signs were there, right in front of his oblivious face. He had never seen her leave the property in the weeks he was there working. She was always, either, in the house or on the porch, the furthest from the house he had ever seen her was the mailbox. She got clearly anxious about any mention of leaving to go anywhere, and her car hadn't moved since the first time he saw it in the dirt driveway. Everything made so much sense to him now, with the sudden realization he had left her, alone, in a tent full of complete strangers.
“Shit!” He barked, taking the food and drinks and rushing back to the tent. “Are you okay?” He asked, as soon as he found her in the crowded stands.
“Other than starving, I'm all right.” She replied, looking up at him.
“You're sure?” He asked and sat down beside her, he could see the tremble in her shoulders. “You're shaking.” He pointed out, his brow creasing with concern.
Why did I push her into this! He berated himself mentally.
“I'm just cold.” She frowned back, which wasn't a complete lie, it was rather nippy out and she had left her jacket in the truck.
“Oh.” Sy gulped at her, setting their snacks down on the empty bench in front of them and peeled off his Five Finger Death Punch hoodie. “Here.” He said, handing her the toasty warm garment.
“Thanks.” She blushed, pulling it on.
The comforting warmth of the fabric settled around her, wrapping her up in Sy's scent of dark vanilla, the fresh cut pine boards he had been working with, fresh air and patchouli, from his beard oil. The tremor vibrating through her body instantly subsided as she huddled herself up inside Sy's hoodie, suddenly feeling safe, safer than she had ever felt in her life before, the murmur of the crowd vanished and everyone melted away, but Sy.
Sy smiled at her, watching as she stopped shaking. “Are you still hungry?” He asked her, picking up the heavy paper plate with the lumpy and sweet pastry dough on it, covered in butter, cinnamon and brown sugar.
“What in the world is that?” She frowned down at it.
“It's called an Elephant Ear.” He chuckled, letting her take the plate from him and picked up his own. “It's delicious.”
“It's as big as one!” She chuckled, balancing it in her lap and pushed up the oversized sleeves of Sy's hoodie, not wanting to get it messy as she tore a piece of the dough off and popped it into her mouth. “Mmm.” She melted, licking her coated lips. “That is sinful.” She moaned, smiling over at Sy, who simply folded his and took a massive bite out of it.
“I told you!” He mumbled around his mouthful, grinning ear to ear.
“I might have to learn how to make these.” Lily said, tearing off a bigger piece and licked her fingers clean of the cinnamon and sugar combination.
“Oh, don't threaten to spoil a man!” Sy laughed, gently touching his shoulder to hers.
“Hey, here she is!” Lily called out, pointing to the girl entering the center of the tent atop a horse. “They look so good together!” She grinned, beaming with her own dose of pride in Skylar and Juniper.
Lily lifted her hand and waved as Skylar looked out over the crowd, she spotted Lily and waved back at her, smiling. Skylar got herself and Juniper into position, taking deep breaths to try and settle her jittery nerves and focus on her task ahead. Skylar was given the signal and she was off, speeding as fast as she and Juniper could go towards the first barrel in front of them. Lily scooted towards the edge of her seat, her half eaten elephant ear forgotten in her excitement. Skylar seemingly sailed through the cloverleaf pattern she had to make around the barrels and back to her mark.
The crowd clapped as she went out, letting the next rider and their horse take their turn at the competition. Lily finished off her elephant ear and sipped at her Dr. Pepper, eyes glued to the beautiful horses and focused riders as they went around and around the barrels, kicking up dirt as they went.
“I really hope she wins.” Lily said, looking at Sy, only to realize he had been watching her the whole time, and not the racers. “What?” She squeaked, eyes wide. “Do I have something on my face?”
“No.” He smiled back, then chuckled. “Well..” He picked up the paper napkin he was given with the elephant ears and gently brushed off a line of brown sugar and cinnamon that Lily had on her cheek. “Just a little sugar.” He told her, softly.
“But, other than that, you're...” He paused for a moment. “Perfect.” He whispered, breathlessly.
Lily gulped and her cheeks warmed, biting the inside of her lip and fidgeted inside Sy's hoodie. “Thank you.” She mumbled back. “For the..” She motioned to her cheek, shyly.
“Of course.” Sy nodded, a tender smile on his lips. “But, I hope she wins too.” He added, turning back to the event.
“All right everybody, it's time to announce the winners for first, second and third place!” The announcer said, standing in the middle of the racing area, a microphone in his hand and a big cowboy hat on his head, as his boots shined with their spurs.
Lily crossed her fingers, making Sy chuckle at her.
“In third place is,” the announcer said, lifting a clipboard he was holding. “Paige Whitley with thirty-four seconds!”
The crowd clapped and whistled as the girl came up and took her ribbon for third place, then stood to one side of the announcer.
“In second place is, Ainsley Ortega with twenty-eight seconds!”
Another round of claps, whistling and yells from the crowd as she took her place beside Paige. There was a moment of pause and the suspense was starting to drive Lily stir crazy as they waited for him to announce the first place winner.
“and the first place winner of the Dallas Heritage Fair is,” He paused for a dramatic affect. “Skylar Marlowe with twenty-one seconds!”
“Yes!” Lily shouted, her arms flying up as she bounced in her seat, overjoyed. “She did it, Sy.” She grinned at him, throwing her arms around his neck, in her moment of overzealous excitement, forgetting herself.
“She did.” Sy grinned, wrapping his arms around her and hugging her back.
He unconsciously turned his face into her hair and took a deep breath, smelling her Lavender and Rosemary shampoo in it. They stayed like that, in a timeless bubble, before they recalled themselves and pulled apart again.
“I'm sorry, I was excited.” Lily blushed, brushing her hair behind her ear.
“Same.” Sy replied, clearing his throat. “I should get you back home now, it's been two hours.” He said, picking up their empty plates, napkins and soda cans, standing.
“I-” Lily froze, watching him dump them into a trash bin nearby. “I don't—mind—staying another hour, if you're not.” She told him, a hard lump in her throat. “I mean, there's so much of the fair I haven't seen, since it's my first time, and you spent a pretty penny on our access bracelets.” She said, lifting her arm, the sleeve of his hoodie slipped down her arm, revealing her red bracelet.
“Be rude and a shame to waste it, don't you think?” She asked, staring at him, shyly.
Sy studied her for a moment, weighing what he knew of her now, but she looked and seemed all right, for the most part, just her usual shy and withdrawn self. “If you want too, Lily. Then, I'm more than all right with staying and showing you the rest of the booths.” He said, his voice soft and—protective.
“I would like that.”
Sy smiled at her, gently, then offered her his arm, which she took. He escorted them out of the tent, with the rest of the fair-goers. Sy took her around the fair ground, stopping at booths that Lily showed interest in. He paused at one booth, seeing all the stuffed animals that were hanging around it and pressed his lips together, before glancing at her and deciding to give it a shot, wanting to win something for her, so when she saw it, she'd remember the fun she had at the fair; and think of him.
It was a shooting game booth, giving the player a minute to hit as many targets as they could, each target was worth a certain amount of points and moved quickly. But, Sy wasn't at all worried, this was his element, his military career made something like this easy. So, he took up the bee-bee rifle that the booth runner gave him, slotted it against his shoulder and held it through pure muscle memory. He patiently waited for the signal for him to start, watching the painted metal targets move on their tracks.
“Ready!” the booth runner called, standing to the side. “Set! Go!”
Sy's body instantly tensed and he started firing, his movement was sharp, quick and calculated, hips and shoulders pivoting as he hit each of the targets, only missing two in the full minute he had. Lily stood beside him, fully impressed by his skill.
“Seven hundred and forty-nine points.” the booth runner read off the scoreboard at the back of the booth. “That's the highest score yet!” He said, impressed himself. “You have a pick of whatever you want, sir.” He told Sy, motioning around to the stuffed animals, some were super teeny, while others were nearly Lily's size.
Sy surveyed the selection of stuffed animals, before a certain one caught his attention and smiled at it, it was perfect for why he wanted it. “That's the one.” He said, pointing out the medium sized, curly furred and light tan, teddy bear.
“A perfect choice, sir.” the booth runner praised him, taking it down and handing it over to Sy.
“Here.” Sy smiled, turning and holding it out to Lily. “He's for you.” He told her, gently, as his heart thundered in his chest.
Lily slowly took the bear from him, it was silk soft and plush, it felt nice under her hands, making her instantly smile as she stared down at it. She was touched that Sy had gone through the trouble of winning the game to get her a prize, no one had ever done something so kind, sweet and thoughtful for her before, it made her a bit emotional.
“Thank you.” She whispered, hugging it to her chest and looked up at Sy. “I love it.” She assured him, seeing the concern in his blue eyes that she wouldn't.
“Good.” He beamed, his heart still thundering, but it felt light and hopeful. “I'm glad.”
It was nearly dark by the time Lily and Sy finished their tour of the fair grounds and headed back to the house. Lily convinced Sy to stay for dinner before he headed back home, wanting to thank him in someway for taking her to the fair and showing her such a good time, something she hadn't had in as long as she could remember.
“Your cooking never fails to amaze me.” Sy chuckled, popping the last bit of his biscuit into his mouth. “It's the definition of a great home cooked meal.” He praised her, leaning back in his chair and rubbing his lean tummy through the fabric of his shirt.
“Well, you have the appetite of a Viking.” She giggled back, blushing at her plate.
Sy laughed again, his own bearded cheeks coloring. “True enough.” He agreed, smiling brightly at her.
“Thank you for taking me today.” Lily said, speaking softly. “I really did have a lot of fun.” She confessed, shyly twisting her napkin in her hands, and thinking of the teddy bear that now took up a prized spot on her bed, upstairs.
“I did too, I'm glad you agreed to go with me.” Sy nodded, tilting his head at her. “Did us both a great deal of good to get out and do something fun.”
“I should let you take off, before it gets too late.” She answered, after a brief moment of silence. “I know it's a long drive.”
Sy cleared his throat, biting the inside of his lip, he didn’t want to bring up staying at the motel down in Celina, so the drive was easier to make and gave him more hours in the day to work on the seemingly endless list of projects that needed to be done, to get the farm back into running order, again. He didn’t want them to argue after such an amazing day.
But, he knew she was right.
“Thanks for dinner.” He said, taking his plate to the sink, wanting a reason to linger a second longer. “Good night, Ms. Lily.” He smiled at her, as they stepped out onto the porch. “I'll see you in the morning.”
“I'll be here, with coffee and breakfast waiting, as always.” She replied, standing barefoot on the smooth and solid board of the porch.
He chuckled, bidding her good night again and got into his truck. As he drove to the motel, he recalled all the smiles she had given him throughout the day and the sound of her victorious laugh, when she beat him at the ring toss game, but sweetly gave him the bracelet she won, making him glance at the macrame, blue and gold turquoise beads weaved with black thread and tied with a slip knot, that hugged his thick wrist. His skin tingled as it remembered the gentle touch of her dainty fingers as she slipped it over his hand to his wrist and tugged it secure.
Sy wasn't a jewelry person, other than his watch and his dog-tags, but for as long as he lived, he vowed to never take that bracelet off.

Sy woke the next morning wrapped around a warm body and a steady heart beat in his ear, he tipped his head back and was met with Lily's sleeping face, his head pillowed on her breasts. He smiled, hugging his arms snugger around her waist and sighed, comfortable and peaceful, nuzzling his face into her chest.
Lily moaned softly, making Sy smile against the fabric of the night shirt she was wearing, her hand moved against the broad expanse of his back, fingertips sleepily caressing his spine, unconsciously soothing him, before moving between his shoulder blades, tickling the nape of his neck and rubbing the back of his head with her palm.
He vaguely remembered her calling his name and holding him after his nightmare, whispering into his ear that he was safe and at home, with her. Lily made the choice to bring him to her bed, comforting him even more, until he fell asleep, and for the first time in years, Sy actually dreamt about something other than war and endless spaces of bloody sand.
Reaching up, Sy brushed his fingers through her bangs, smiling. “My Angel.” He whispered, not wanting to wake her.
Carefully unwrapping himself from around her, Sy slipped out of bed and gingerly covered Lily up, before tip toeing downstairs to the kitchen. Scratching the back of his head for a moment, Sy moved about the kitchen, setting up the coffee maker, pulled out the skillet and started making breakfast. He figured she had been making him breakfast every morning for the last several months, it was time for him to return the favor.
So, Sy went all out, once he had everything made, he brought it upstairs to her.
Lily took a deep breath and moaned, stretching and rolling onto her back, but found Sy was no longer in bed with her. She sat up, panicked that something had happened to him, and was about to get out of bed to look for him, when he appeared in the bedroom door, relieved he was all right.
“Morning.” He smiled, finding her sitting up.
“Did you make breakfast?” She frowned as he approached her side of the bed.
“I did.” He nodded, setting her steaming cup of tea on her bedside table. “I thought, since you always make me breakfast, that I'd make you breakfast this go around.” Sy explained, setting the tray of food over her lap.
“What's better than breakfast in bed?”
“Nothing currently comes to mind.” Lily smiled, a soft blush on her cheeks, actually pleasantly surprised at this change of events, touched at Sy’s sweet gesture.
“I didn't think so.” Sy chuckled, pulling up the chair that was at a small desk in her room and sat down, balancing his own plate of food in his lap.
“So, what's on your agenda today, Captain?” She asked, taking a sip of her tea and was surprised to find it was exactly to her liking.
“I think, it's time I started working on the roof.” He replied, bringing his fork to his mouth. “I want to at least give it some temporary patches, before the weather turns.” He told her, after swallowing. “It'll also give me a chance to find out what all the problems with it are, and if I'll need to re-roof it.”
“I hope not.” Lily frowned, washing down some of her food with a gulp of tea.
“Well, from what I've seen on the ground, it looks to be the original roof that was put on when the house was built.” He chuckled at her, setting his empty plate on her nightstand. “That was nearly a century ago.”
“Unless, you know about it being replaced since then?” He asked her, tilting his head.
“The realtor didn't mention it to me.” Lily replied, searching her mind for any scrap of memory of the day she bought the place.
“That's all right.” Sy assured her, gently touching her hand. “I'll get it done, don't you worry.”
Lily smiled at him, turning her hand to thread her fingers with his. “I'm not worried, since you're the one on the case.” She replied, softly.
Sy grinned at her, bringing her hand to his mouth and kissed her fingers, before letting go and collecting their plates. “You know, what would you say, if I managed to install a dishwasher for you?” He asked, pausing in the doorway of her bedroom.
“I have a dishwasher.” Lily giggled, holding up her hands and wiggling her fingers at him.
“You know what I mean, sugar butt.” He laughed, smirking even broader at her.
Lily shrugged, still giggling at him, her cheeks coloring at his nickname. “I don't know, Bear. I've never had one before.”
“Well then, Angel, I'll riddle that one out for you.” He promised in a soft voice.
“I believe you.” She whispered back, giddy, and not for a dishwasher.
“I'm going to check the mail.” Lily said, drying her hands on a dish towel, after washing the dishes from lunch.
“All right.” Sy nodded, still sitting at the table.
Sy had stood to refill his coffee cup, when the phone rang. Biting his lip and glancing out of the kitchen, he saw Lily was too far down the driveway to call her back to answer it, so he picked it up instead; clearing his throat.
“Moore residence.” He spoke into the receiver.
“She's a sweet thing, isn't she?” A sinister voice asked from the other end.
“Excuse you?” Sy barked, a flash of hot anger bursting through his body.
“Oh yes.” The voice chuckled, incredibly delighted. “She is sweet as a Lily, so pure and good.”
“Who is this?” Sy demanded with a deep growl, his teeth gritted and bared as he gripped the handle of the phone even tighter in his hand.
“She's mine, you know.” They growled back at Sy, breathing heavily, their own anger mounting. “She's always been mine and she will always be mine.”
“Not anymore.” Sy hissed back and slammed the phone down in its cradle.
“Sy?” Lily frowned, coming into the kitchen as he hung up the phone. “Who was that?”
“I don't know, you tell me?” He replied, turning towards her, brows drawn together.
“I'm not the one that answered it, Austin.” She countered, shaking her head, confused by his anger.
“It was some guy, said you were his, always had been and would be.” Sy told her, pushing his jaw forward.
Lily's eyes glassed over, letting out a shuddering breath and started trembling. Sy blinked at her, his anger at the caller's words melting away to alarmed concern. He took a step forward, reaching out for her, but Lily stumbled away from him, tears finally spilling free.
“Lily.” He whispered softly, his chest tight. “Easy.” He cooed at her, licking his lips.
“I'm not his, not anymore.” She whimpered, shaking her head. “Why can't he just leave me be.”
Sy blinked at her, frowning harder. “What?”
“Nothing.” Lily mewled, biting her lip.
“No, come on.” He coaxed her, resting his hand on her arm and gently pulled her against him. “Tell me.” He whispered, gently rubbing her back.
“I thought I got away from him.” She sniffled against his shirt. “Thirteen hundred miles away from him. I was so careful—so careful.” She mumbled, hands clinging onto the sides of his shirt. “I don't-I don't know how he found me—unless...”
“Unless?” Sy frowned, still slowly rubbing her back and trying to process what she was telling him. “Sit down.” He said, moving them towards the breakfast table and pulled out a chair for her, before bringing the other one around from the other side to sit beside her.
“Start at the beginning.”
Lily cleared her throat and stared down at her hands, folded in her lap. “I was born and raised in Middleburg, Virginia. You know, that I'm an only child and that my mom died, when I was born. I was raised by my grandparents, because my dad was in and out of my life, before just finally disappearing from it, when I was nineteen.” She explained to him, licking her lips.
“He blamed me for my mom's death.” She added, quietly.
Sy reached out and rested his hand on her thigh, squeezing it gently, and gave her a sweet smile.
“When I was seventeen, I met a boy at church, Jak.” Lily continued to explain to him. “It was the only time I really got to interact with others, my grandparents were strict, homeschooling me and only really letting me out of the house, unless they were with me, which was usually only for church on Sunday.” She fidgeted, shyly. “He was the only boy to show any interest in me, which didn't and did surprise me. The little house on the prairie dresses my grandma made me wear, and the glasses I had back then, you could see the moon through them.” She chuckled, cheeks colored.
Sy smiled back at her, even picturing her as a little girl like that, he still found her beautiful.
“But, Jak didn't care, or at least he didn't say or show he did. I would sneak out at night to meet him in the apple orchard my grandfather grew. It had been in our family since the Revolutionary War, the land was given to my, how many times, great-grandfather as payment for his service in the war.”
“I bet it's beautiful.” Sy commented, warmed at the thought.
“They are, so many of the trees are the original ones that were planted.” She smiled back, picturing the orchard in her mind. “The first one that was ever planted, after he cleared away the land, is still there and yielding, there's a plaque staked by its roots, and people come from all around to see it and the orchard, the Warren Apple.”
Sy rested back in his chair. “Your family owns the Warren Orchard Company? You're one of those Warrens?”
“I am.” She nodded, smiling proudly at that fact, but it vanished.
“Anyway, Jak and I would sneak every moment we could to see each other. He even got a job, during the summer, in the orchard, so we could see each other even more.” She took a deep breath, letting it out softly. “But, a year after we met and started being sweet on each other, my grandparents lodged a missionary for his two year mission in our ward. Jak thought he and I were getting close, that my grandparents had actually brought him to live with us, so he and I could court and marry.”
“He grew jealous and possessive. I was stupid, naive and young, I didn't know what was happening, that he was being abusive, until it was almost far too late.”
“What happened, that caused you to realize it?” Sy asked, tilting his head at her.
“I met Jak in the orchard one night, when I was twenty, the day after the missionary went back home to Michigan, because his two years were up. When I got there, Jak was pacing, already angry. Livid. When he saw me, he started yelling about how he had seen me kissing the missionary, how we practically ate each other's faces on the back porch, while everyone else was in the house, during his farewell party.” She said, glancing out the window behind the breakfast table.
“Of course, I hadn't been. Matt, the Missionary, and I had been on the back porch together, I had gone out there to get away from the press of all the people and he went out there to check on me. We had hugged, only the once, since doing so isn't really acceptable, two not courting, unchaperoned kids. But, we did nothing more, before going back inside. The truth didn't matter to Jak though, he had his version of what he saw and it was unchangeable.” Lily bit her lip and gripped Sy's wrist as his hand still laid on her thigh. “He lost his temper and hit me, but in my love sick stupidity, I didn't break it off there or tell my grandparents about it.”
“Instead, I enrolled in a university for Photography and Web Design, moved out of my grandparents' place and into one with him, like an idiot.”
“You weren't an idiot, Lily.” Sy told her, shaking his head and slipping his hand into hers. “It's more common than you think.”
“I know it is.” She sighed, clinging onto his hand.
“He only got worse and it got harder for me to get my school work done, with him accusing me that I was sleeping with my project partners, even teachers.” She huffed, shaking her head at his allegations, that now sounded so ridiculous. “The straw that broke the camel's back was,” She paused, biting and licking her lips, fighting down a bubble of emotions and memories. “One of my project mates called to ask me about the faux website we were designing for a fake company we had to make up, cause she wanted to know what time was good for us to meet up, and Jak answered the phone, claimed he heard a guy in the background, throwing the phone across the living room and went ballistic, saying I was having her call me to set up a time for me and the guy he heard, to try and fool him.”
“He spent the next hour going to town on me.” She said, glancing up at him, the hint and meaning in her eyes.
“Afterwards, he went to work and I packed a bag. I had some money from the family orchard business, so I took a good portion of it, bought a greyhound bus ticket to a cousin I was close to in New Jersey, Maggie, and stayed with her, knowing he wouldn't find me there, my grandparents wouldn't think I'd go there, and she wouldn't ever rat on me. While I was there, I petitioned for a name change, from Liliana Warren to Lily Ana Moore, and finished my degree, then found this place and moved out here.”
“So, how do you think he found you?” Sy asked, worried about her safety and angry that this asshole had the audacity to hurt her and wanted to try and hurt her again, but he kept a lid on his temper, not wanting to frighten her anymore than she already was.
“I've been keeping tabs on my grandparents, mostly through my cousin.” Lily answered, biting her lip. “She called me a year ago, to tell me that my grandmother had a stroke, a pretty bad stroke at that. She's apparently wheelchair bound now. Maggie went down there to visit them, and my grandfather was talking about how he needed someone to work on the company website, when Maggie let it slip that I have a web design business.”
“Oh.” Sy let out, eyes wide.
“Yeah.” She nodded back. “So, of course, they got upset, understanding that Maggie knew what had happened to me and where I was and all that. She called afterwards, apologizing up and down to me for it. She didn't tell them where I was or anything like that, just that I was safe and fine, and if I wanted to contact them, I would.”
“Did you?”
“I did.” Lily sighed, voice tight. “I figured after four years, I owed them a call.”
“So, do you think they told Jak?”
“I don't know.” She shrugged. “But, a week after I called them, I started getting hang up calls, then calls where no one would say anything for a few minutes, before hanging up. Then, two months ago, I got a call that was different from the others, he said something to me, and a month ago, he said something being soon.”
The wires connected in Sy's brain. “That's what caused you to take all those pills.”
Lily gulped and bit her lip, eyes burning, as she nodded her head. “Ye-ah.” She choked, fear and anxiety starting to mount inside of her again.
“Hey, hey.”
Sy cooed, wrapping his arms around her and pulled her into his lap, hugging her against his chest. “It's all right, Lily. It's going to be all right, I promised to protect you and I will. You are safe with me, you will always be safe with me, whatever the cost.” He whispered in her ear, holding her close and planning ways and means to protect her.
“Sy?” Lily called from the open door of her bedroom, just as Sy stepped out of the hall bathroom, in nothing, but a pair of black boxers.
“Lily?” He replied, rubbing the towel over his head, and looked up at her, lifting a brow, inquisitively.
Lily rested her hand on the handle of her door and stepped sideways, giving a little motion of her head into her room, a soft and offering expression on her face. Sy blinked at her, surprised, then down at Aika, who sat in the doorway of his room, feeling like he was picking what lady to sleep with for the night.
He tilted his head at Aika and gave her a sympathetic expression.
“Sorry, Girl.” He whispered to the Shepherd, turning towards Lily.
Lily chuckled at him, smiling and shaking her head as he passed by her and into her room. “You can come too, Aika.” She called to her, then turned into her room.
“You're cool with this?” Sy asked, eyes motioning to her bed.
“It was my idea, wasn't it?” She smiled at him, then stepped inside her closet for a moment and came back in a t-shirt-like nightie with Mickey Mouse on it, before pulling down the blankets and crawling into bed.
“It was.” He nodded, then laid down with her, covering up.
Lily scooted closer to him and Sy draped his arm over her waist, tucking her against him and she let him lay his head on her chest, stroking his arm. She was comfortable with the warm weight of his body against hers, the clean scent of his skin and hair from his shower. She felt Sy's body slowly melt into hers as he fell asleep, it had been her plan. Lily knew there was a high likelihood of Sy having another episode or nightmare, but figured, if he was there, with her, already safe and comfortable in her arms, he wouldn't have it.
That was her deepest hope, at least.
But, the next thing Lily knew, she was being jerked roughly off the bed and pinned underneath Sy's mountainous weight, his heavy and hot breath puffing against the side of her face as he blanketed her with his body, clearly startled and on high alert. The room lit up with a quick flash of lightning and the furious sound of rain beating on all parts of the house filled the bedroom around them.
“Austin.” She gasped, grasping the back of his arms, nails digging into his sweaty skin, thinking he had been set off by the noise of the sudden storm. “Aust-”
“Ssshhh.” He hushed her, lips brushing her temple, the hairs of his beard tickling her skin. “Stay here.” He whispered into her ear, then moved off of her and out of the room, Aika sitting in the open doorway and growling into the darkness of the hallway after him.
Lily sat up on her elbows, knowing that what was happening couldn't have been from one of Sy's nightmares or the storm, because Aika wouldn't be acting like this, she was angry, like she was daring something Lily couldn't see to try and cross her. But, nothing came, not even Sy, and Lily was starting to get worried. So, getting up, she edged around Aika and tip toed downstairs, jerking at another boom of thunder and crack of lightning, until she found Sy standing in the entryway.
“Austin?” She called out to him, over the sound of the rain, which sounded much louder downstairs.
“I told you to stay upstairs.” He barked, not looking back at her.
“What's wrong?” She asked, knowing there had to be something, by the tone of his voice.
“Nothing, just go back to bed.”
Narrowing her eyes, Lily stepped closer to him and her eyes grew wide, seeing what had caused Sy to wake up and react like he had. The large bay window in the den that faced out onto the porch and the front of the property was smashed, the glitter of the broken glass shined in the lightning strikes and left the outline of the brick amongst them, the cause of the broken window. Lily's eyes snapped out the living room window, expecting to see someone, not just someone, but Jak, to be standing out in the yard, staring back at them. But, there was no one, but her and Sy's cars. Her heart started to race and pound, making her feel dizzy and lightheaded, trembling so hard she almost lost her balance, but caught herself on the back of the couch.
Sy turned and grabbed her, picking her up in his arms and carried her back up to bed. “Stay here.” He ordered her, pointing a stiff finger at her, then went back downstairs.
Going out back, Sy grabbed a large piece of plywood he had bought in preparation for repairing the roof and instead used it to board up the broken window, until the storm passed and morning came, so he could find a piece of glass to replace it, leaving him and the den floor mostly wet. He moped the den floor and laid out nearly every towel Lily had in the house in hopes the old floorboards wouldn't warp under the water damage.
He stepped out onto the porch for a moment, glaring into wet dark. “This is my house now.” He growled, knowing Jak was still out there somewhere nearby. “My girl.” He hissed, before turning back inside, going up to the guest room to change into a dry pair of boxers and joined Lily back in her bed.
“It was him.” She mumbled, hugging her pillow to her chest. “It had to be him.”
Sy sighed softly, locking his arms around her waist and hugged her to his chest, curving his body around hers. He didn't know what to say to her, they both knew it had to be Jak, who else would have thrown a brick through someone's window in the middle of a storm like this one, especially after all the other incidents over the last several months; all the lines drew back to Jak on his unhealthy, possessive rampage to reclaim Lily as his own. Sy was afraid that if he verbalized his agreement with her, it would only inflate her already inflamed fear of the obvious.
So, he just clutched her tighter to him, pressing his lips to her shoulder and squeezing his eyes shut against the bright flashes of lightning.
“Lily, I'm going to go to town, I have something I need to pick up.” He told her, searching the living room for his car keys.
“I thought you already ordered the new windowpane?” Lily called back, appearing out of the kitchen, where she was washing the dishes.
“I did.” He nodded, he had found a shop that he could order a replacement windowpane for the den window that morning, but it wouldn't be ready until the next day. “This is for something else.” He told her, finding his keys under a magazine on the coffee table.
“What are you going for, then, Bear?” She asked, tilting her head at him.
Sy paused and regarded her. “Don't worry about it, Angel. I'll be back in an hour.” He told her, then, went out.
“Okay.” Lily frowned, glancing out the living room window, the thunder and lightning had passed during the early morning, but it was still raining cats and dogs.
Sighing, Lily turned back into the kitchen, taking a bucket and mop out of the utility closet, filled the bucket with warm water and soap, before getting down to mopping the floors, with nothing else to do in the current weather.
Sy rushed out to his truck, but was still almost half soaked by the time he settled himself in the driver's seat. Turning on the car and cranking on the heat, Sy pulled off the property and headed towards Celina. He pulled into the small parking center the small town had, scanning the rain blurred signs, looking for the one he was heading for, before opening the door and rushing towards it, pulling open the door, with an electric ding, announcing his presence.
“How can I help you?” the shop owner asked, coming out of a small room in the back and stopped behind a long glass case.
“Yeah, I'm looking for something specific.” Sy replied, stopping on the other side of the glass case, a look of understanding in both men's eyes.
“What specifics would that be?”
“Taurus, PT111 G2, 9mm.” Sy rattled off with familiar ease.
“Do you have a license and ID?” The store owner asked, eyes scanning the case between them.
“Then, some.” Sy laughed, pulling out his wallet to show the man his qualifications.
“You're a retired Captain.” The man noted, seeing Sy's military ID.
“That I am.” Sy chuckled, grinning with some pride.
The store owner got Sy squared away with the weapon he wanted, a secure case and a couple rounds of ammo, while also chattering about the military, being a retired Staff Sergeant himself. Getting back into his truck, he put the case under the passenger seat, pausing to stare at it for a moment, emotions and thoughts brewing inside of him, then shook them off. Satisfied, Sy went back home to Lily, finding her dusting the living room, when he came in, carrying the case and sat it down on the coffee table.
Lily paused, dust rag poised above the mantelpiece, staring at the case. “Is that what I think it is?” She asked, finally looking up at him.
“If you think it's a gun, then yes.” Sy replied, sitting down on the couch and tugging on the soaked laces of his boots.
“Why,” She gulped, arm dropping to her side. “did you buy a gun and bring it here?”
“Because, I wanted to and as a precaution.” He answered her, yanking his boots off.
“A precaution?”
“There is a fucking asshole out there.” Sy barked, jerking his arm up and finger pointing out the window. “Trying to hurt you.” His finger moved to her, in emphasis. “I am a big man. I'm a strong man. I've killed and subdued more than one man with my bare hands, but a personal cost.” He explained to her, standing and jerking up his shirt, showing her a couple of scars on his sides and chest, some were round and puckered, gunshot wounds, others were stripes, like stab wounds.
“If that prick decides to come into this house, to try and put his hands on you. That,” He pointed down to the gun case. “is going to be the first thing he wants to meet, because if he has to get close enough to me, that I need to put my hands on him, then they will be that last thing he will ever feel.” He told her, chest heaving as he got worked up over the situation.
Lily gulped at him, biting her lip, a flash of fear in her eyes at his passionate words, seeing a vein of rage that Jak had also been capable of.
“I just want to protect you.” He said softly, taking deep breaths, trying to calm himself down; seeing he had scared her.
“I know you do, Austin.” She whimpered back, gulping, eyes shiny. “I know you do.”
Sy moaned, something cold pressing into his neck. “Hm, Lily.” He chuckled, scrunching his head and shoulders together, grinning as the cold and wet touched his bare chest, making him grunt and wiggle away. “Why are you so col-” He started to laugh, opening his eyes, only to meet the soulful and tawny colored eyes of Aika.
“Aika, what are ya doin' here?” He frowned, and sat up, finding it was just him and the German Shepherd in the bed, Lily nowhere in sight. “Lily?” He called out, turning his head towards the master bathroom, but it was empty.
Panic filled Sy as he yanked the blankets back and pounded down the stairs into the living room, then the den. Sy squeezed his eyes shut, taking deep breaths and clenching his hands in and out of fists, trying to keep himself cool and calm, before going into the kitchen, hearing the screen of the back door knocking against the door frame, and found the main back door was ajar.
“What is she doing?” He whispered to himself, biting his lip and looking back, considering the option of going back upstairs and getting the gun, but something in his gut told him he wouldn't need it.
Opening the door, Sy stepped out onto the back porch, a shiver wracking his body as a strong gust of rainy wind rushed by him. He narrowed his eyes, scanning the drenched backyard, the tall, unruly and uncut grass bent from the pelting of the rain and gusts of wind, he caught a quick movement to his left and turned in that direction, stepping off the porch and followed after it, towards the barn, just catching the billowing fabric of Lily's white nightie, vanishing inside.
“Lily, what are you doing in here?” He called out, pushing open the barn door a bit more. “Lily?” He called again, frowning as he crossed the barn and found her huddled in one of the old horse stalls. “What are you doing in here, Angel?” He cooed at her, shaking his head, droplets of rain running down both of their faces, and watched her melt into the corner.
Lily panted, her back pressed against the warped and worn wall behind her, arms pressed to her chest, her nightie so soaked, it was almost see through. Sy bit his lip and gulped, slowly crouching down. He knew what was going on, he had seen and suffered things like this a million times over the last ten plus years. She was having a PTSD episode, running away from the terror that was inside her head, trying to hide and find somewhere safe from it. Everything over the last several months with Jak stalking and harassing her was really starting to affect her, finally breaking her it seemed.
“I'm not going to hurt you, love.” He said softly, keeping his voice soft and low. “Come here.” He gulped, opening his arms to her and biting his lip with apprehension. “It's all right. You know, you can trust me, Sugar.” He whispered, nodding his head as she slowly unfolded herself and crawled over to him.
“Hey, Angel.” Sy cooed, sighing softly, and closed his arms around her, pressing his lips to the top of wet her head. “Ssshh.” He hushed her, rubbing her back and cupping the back of her head, feeling her tears add to the raindrops on his chest.
“I c-can-can't ta-take it an-anymore.” She sobbed, trembling in his arms, overcome with emotions and cold.
“We'll get through this, Angel.” He whispered to her, cupping her chilled cheeks in his hands and tilted her head back to look up at him. “We will get through this. You and I will get through this together. Everything will work out.”
Lily shook her head, her pale lips trembling. “N-no, it wo-won't. He-he always g-gets what h-he wants. All-always.” She mewled, whining. “I don't kn-know why I-I thought I c-could ge-get away.”
Sy's expression was hard for a moment, before he brought their faces together and kissed her, deeply. Lily stiffened against him, taken off guard by his kiss, but she didn't pull away or push him away. Gulping, she shyly returned his kiss, resting her hands on him, feeling the skin of his sides jump and react to her icy touch.
“I've wanted to kiss you.” Sy said, pulling back. “For such a long time.” He admitted, looking into her eyes. “Since that day on the porch, when you woke me up.”
“Since, you gave me your hoodie at the fair.” She whispered back, licking her lips, the warmth of Sy's still lingering on them.
Sy leaned forward, kissing her gently and brushing his fingers through her dripping hair, Lily pushing forward to deepen it for a moment, letting out a breathy whimper. Sy smirked, then looked down at the floor between them, it was still strewn with decades old hay and dirt. He held up a finger and stood, bumping around in the dark barn before a scratching sound sounded among the patter of rain on the metal barn roof. A moment later, a teeny glow filled the space and Sy approached where Lily was still kneeling, holding an old, beat up, oil lantern he knew was in the barn from his many searches of the space, hanging it up on a bent and rusty nail on the stall wall, then disappeared for another moment.
“Stand up.” He said, motioning her out of the stall, holding something in his arms.
Lily frowned at him, but stepping out of the stall and out of his way, catching a glimpse of what it was, it was one of the drop clothes he bought for when he painted the house, keeping the paint off the new porch. Sy unfolded the drop cloth over the dirty hay and stall floor, making sure it was comfortable, then turned back to her.
“How gentlemanly.” Lily complimented him.
“I am a Southern boy.” Sy chuckled, letting his Southern drawl deepen, and wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her against him. “Who's in love with Southern Lady.”
Lily blushed as Sy kissed her again, hugging her against him and up off her feet, turning around and slowly dropped to his knees, gently laying her back on the situated drop cloth. Lily wrapped her arms around Sy's neck, moaning softly against his lips, feeling the fabric of her nightie rub against her cold hardened nipples as Sy moved to kiss down to her neck, sinking his teeth into her delicate skin and let out a loud moan, pushing up against him.
“Austin!” She cried out, pressing her cheek to his ear as he continued to bite and suck on her neck, his beard tickling and rubbing against the skin underneath her jaw, leaving it red and sensitive.
Sy chuckled, loving the sound of her calling out his name with the metal patter of rain, his hand gliding over the soaked material of her nightie, bunching and hiking it up out of his way, pressing his palm against her side, rubbing his big hands all over her exposed body, grunting and growling into her neck, like a wild grizzly bear, finally getting his claws on his prized catch. His big mitts were on her plump breasts almost instantly, squeezing and kneading them, rubbing the rough pads of his thumbs over the sensitive nubs of her nipples, making her moan and whimper, fidgeting beneath him and rubbing her legs together, adding to the growing slickness between them.
“You sound so sweet.” Sy moaned back, pulling away from her neck, a set of dark teeth marks left behind, dipping his head for a moment to swirl his tongue around one of her nipples.
“Sy.” She whined, gulping down a moan. “Sy, please.”
“Oh.” He smiled, impishly. “You like that?” He asked, flicking her erect nipple with the tip of his tongue and watched her partially melt. “Your sweet, sensitive, little buds.” He cooed, then closed his lips around one of them, suckling gently, rubbing and rolling his tongue against it.
“Ah, shit!” Lily gasped, gripping his shoulders, eyes rolling and fluttering back into her head, heels digging into the fabric of the drop cloth. “God damn it, Austin.” She snapped, pressing her palms to the back of his head, holding his mouth to her breasts, her moans and whimpers filled the barn, pushing against him, egging and begging him to keep going, her breathing growing rugged and labored, moans becoming more urgent and reckless.
“Ah, fuck fuck fuck.” She cried out. “Suck them harder.” She coaxed and demanded. “Oh shit! Please, Austin!!” She gasped suddenly, body going rigid with a soft tremor.
Sy pulled away from her and dripped a hand between her trembling thighs, finding an extremely wet patch there. “So, you come, when you get your pretty breasts sucked.” He grinned, fully turned on and impressed, licking her juices off his fingers and palm.
“I've also never heard you say such naughty words.” He added, teasingly.
Lily chuckled, slowly recovering and smiling shyly up at him.
“Oh, it's too late to get shy now, Angel.” Sy laughed, leaning down and kissed the corner of her mouth. “Your secret is out.” He continued to tease her, playfully bouncing her boobs in his palms.
“And, I'm not letting you off.”
“I'm going to regret this, I can just feel it now.” Lily huffed, shaking her head, but her smile gave away her true feelings.
“Yes, you are.”
Sy chuckled, his hand dipping back between her legs, rubbing her still dripping folds with his calloused fingers, melting her into a puddle of weak and vulnerable whimpers. “You're so sensitive and sound so sweet.” He cooed at her, licking his lips and watching her face. “So, so sweet.” He panted, mouth slightly ajar, slipping his free hand into his damp boxers, curling his fingers around his thick and rock hard shaft, giving it a few shallow strokes.
Lily's eyes drifted down the length of her sweaty body, watching Sy work his cock inside his underwear and felt herself shiver in want and anticipation of it. She licked her lips and looked up at him, their eyes in a silent communication of what they both wanted. Sy shifted, yanking off his boxers to kneel between Lily's legs, wrapping them around his waist, her hips and bottom resting atop his thighs, with the small of her back lifted off the drop cloth beneath her.
“You're sure?” Sy panted, gulping thickly and already breaking out into a sweat, staring at her with wide eyes and blown out pupils.
“Yes.” Lily sighed, nodding her head vigorously at him. “God, yes.” She moaned, squeezing her legs around his waist.
Sy smirked, pressed a hand to her hip, pushing it up her side to palm one of her breasts, squeezing and rubbing it, while taking the base of his cock in his other hand, pumping it a few times, rubbing the fat and cut tip against her still wet pussy, slowly slipping between her folds, brushing her entrance and pushing inside. Lily let out a moaning sigh through her nose, feeling his wide girth stretch her open far more than she had ever been before. Her toes curled and squeezed his hips between her calves and thighs, back arching and hips shifting against the nearly uncomfortable burn of his length being buried ever deeper inside her core. Sy tilted his head at her, bracing a hand on the drop cloth, beside her head, and leaned over her, causing Lily to let out a raspy gasp as his cock changed angles inside of her, and kissed her, slow and passionately, still pushing his hips into her.
“You are so beautiful.” He rasped against her lips, nibbling on her pouty bottom lip.
“Austin.” She whimpered back, breathy, hooking her arms under his arms and pressing her palms flat against tense and sweaty back, nails digging into his cool skin. “Austin.” She chanted, softly, rubbing her nose against his.
“Lily.” Sy moaned back, finally flush inside of her, and rocked into her, taking his time and enjoying her heavenly warmth wrapped around his cock, like a toasty sleeve. “I love you, Lily.” He whispered into her ear, kissing her jaw and cheek.
Lily blushed and let out an airy chuckle, hiding her face in his neck and broad shoulder, hugging her arms and legs tighter around his body, clinging onto him for dear life and squeezed her eyes shut, taking in the sound of Sy's heavy breathing and loud moans and groans, grunting, and sighing out her name, the still steady pitter-patter of the fat raindrops on the old, rusted tin roof and sun-kissed wood walls, all mixed with her own sounds of pleasure.
“Sy?” Lily whispered, after their shared climax, still feeling the euphoric and relaxing pleasure it gave both of them, as she laid on the drop cloth, half tucked underneath Sy's body for warmth in the drafty barn.
“Hm?” He hummed back, nosing her hair and took a deep breath.
Lily smiled, feeling the vibration in his chest, nuzzling back into him. “I love you too, Austin.” She whispered, turned her head to look back at him.
Sy lifted his head and looked down at her, a smile slowly pulling across his lips, an excited and giddy feeling in the pit of his stomach, reaching out to gently brush her hair out of her face, picking out a few bits of straw that happened to get stuck in it from earlier; before oh-so-tenderly kissing her.
“You have no idea how happy that makes me, Angel.” He murmured against her cheek.
“I'm guessing as happy as it makes me, Bear.” She chuckled back, kissing the tip of his nose.
Lily softly stirred just before dawn, cradled in Sy's arms as he carried her out of the barn, the rain finally letting up, and into the house. He carried her upstairs to her room and gently laid her down on her bed, letting him help her out of her still damp nightie and tossed it through the open door of her master bathroom, before crawling into bed with her.
Both of them were out cold before the blankets settled around them, unaware of the audience they had a good deal of the night.

Lily laughed as she played tug-a-war with Aika in the living room, the sound of Sy putting up the last of the siding vibrated throughout the house, with her laughs and Aika's playful growling. The hammering stopped and Sy appeared through the front door, smiling at the two partners in crime.
“I need to go into town.” Sy told Lily, when her attention settled onto him. “The saw blade has dulled and I need to replace it.” He explained to her.
“All right.” She nodded, letting Aika take her rope. “I need to get lunch going.”
“I shouldn't be too long.” He promised, then left.
Sy wasn't gone a minute, when the phone rang in the kitchen and Lily moved to pick it up, before she missed it. “Hello?” She answered, pressing the receiver to her ear with her shoulder and turned towards the refrigerator. “Hello?” She frowned, pulling out food items for her and Sy's lunch.
“How's the business going?” A voice finally answered her.
Lily froze, hand resting on the loaf of bread she was reaching for. “How did you get this number?” She gulped, her heart racing and pounding in her ears.
“I bet once that caveman finishes fixing up the place, it'll look brand new.”
“Ho-” She gasped, a dizzying wave of nausea punched her in the gut, as reality set in.
“Soon, Lily. Soon.” The voice chuckled, then the line went dead.
The phone slipped off of Lily's shoulder and clattered to the floor, alerting Aika, who was chewing on her rope in the living room, and came running in, barking in inquiry and suspicion, standing close to Lily's feet and looked up at her, head cocked to the side. Lily gripped the edge of the counter in front of her, trying to take deep breaths in and out, but her vision swam with an overflow of tears and her chest felt like an elephant was standing on it. She turned and stumbled up the staircase in the kitchen that led upstairs, and went into the hall bathroom, locking herself inside, Aika bounding after her and barking at the bathroom door.
“How? How is this possible?” She trembled, pacing the small space. “I was so careful, so careful. It’s not possible. It’s just a sick joke, from some disgruntled customer. But, what if it isn’t? What if it’s really. Where did I go wrong? I put so many miles between us.”
Her hands shook and she struggled to breath, furious tears streaming down her flushed cheeks. Flashback after flashback rippling through her horrified and panicked mind, her stomach lurched and she dropped to her knees, wrenching violently into the bowl and losing her breakfast into it. She sat there for a long time, before making up her mind, standing up and opening the medicine cabinet, removing a prescription bottle from inside and popped the top off of it. She knew this was a drastic and dark turn to things as she dumped the bottle into her hand, but it wasn’t as dark and ominous, if the voice on the other end of the phone kept their word about finding her, and Lily wasn’t going to take that chance.
She gulped down dozens of the teeny pills, swallowing them down with sink water, then slowly sank down to the floor.
Sy returned twenty minutes later, with a new saw blade and rumbling stomach. He expected, as always, to find Lily had set his lunch down on the table in the breakfast nook, and was either eating hers as well, or she was patiently waiting for him, so they could eat together.
Instead, he entered the house and heard Aika barking incessantly upstairs, which was unusual.
“Lily!” He called out, rounding into the kitchen, finding lunch foods on the counter, some half opened, and the phone on the floor. “Lily!” He yelled out again, a pit forming in his stomach as he mounted the stairs to the second floor.
He had never been upstairs before, everything he needed in the house was downstairs, the kitchen and half bath, so he was unfamiliar with the layout. But, as he reached the second floor landing, he found Aika standing in front of a closed door, barking, whining and scratching at the wood. He crossed the hall and lifted his hand, knocking softly on the door, and listening inside.
“Lily?” He called, knocking again. “Lily, are you all right in there?” He asked, growing even more concerned, when he didn't receive an answer.
Not waiting a moment longer, Sy pushed Aika away from the door and forced it open with his shoulder. As the door flung open and banged against the wall behind it, Sy rushed into the room and felt his heart plummet out of his body, finding Lily laying on the worn and discolored tile floor. He dropped to his knees as he scrambled over to her, cupping her cold, but sweaty, face in his hands, her eyes were rolled back and half lidded, her breathing was shallow and the scent of vomit permeated in the small space. Sy, despite his heart rocketing in his chest, was reasonably calm, his combat cool kicking in, as he quickly pressed his fingers to the spot under the corner of her jaw, feeling how faint her heartbeat was.
“Shit.” He snapped, under his breath, scanning the room, he found a prescription bottle that had rolled under the lip of the vanity, swiped it up and pocketed it. “Lily.” He called, patting her pale cheeks, trying to get any response out of her. “Come on, Lily. Answer me.” He begged her, patting her cheeks a little harder. “What were you thinking.” He growled, then rubbed his knuckles against her sternum in firm circles.
“Oh, thank god.” He sighed, when she whimpered at the painful rub. “Lily, open your eyes and look at me. Come on, darling, look at me.” He coaxed her, rubbing her chest again, but not with his knuckles, just trying to keep her responsive.
“Sy.” She whimpered, eyes fluttering.
“Yeah, love.” He nodded, shifting to pick her up into his arms and carried her out of the bathroom and down the stairs. “Don't worry, honey, I've got you. I'll take care of you and get you to the hospital.” He told her, carrying her out to his truck and got her strapped into the passenger seat, before hopping in and gunning it down the driveway, relieved at his slight laziness, that he left the gate wide open.
“Come on, Lily. Talk to me.” He told her, reaching out to squeeze her shoulder as she whined and pressed her forehead against the window. “Tell me something, anything.”
“I wanna sleep.” She whimpered, brows creased.
“No, no, you can't do that.” Sy shook his head at her, pulling her away from the window. “What color do you want me to paint the house?” He asked, trying to think of anything to keep her engaged long enough to get her to the emergency room.
“What about purple, with hot pink polka dots?” He grinned, blue eyes light up, but still scared for her.
“I hate pink.” Lily whined, her head moving to rest on Sy's broad and stiff shoulder.
“So, pink polka dots.” He said in a voice that said he agreed with the choice.
“No.” She groaned, shaking her head with a whimper, then fell quiet again.
“No, no! Come on, Lily, don't fall asleep.” He begged her, feeling her body relax against him.
The tires of Sy's truck squealed as he parked outside the hospital, pulling Lily out, he quickly carried her into the emergency room, his usual 'cool under pressure' attitude was starting to slip with the desperate situation. The nurse at the station instantly noticed Sy carrying Lily in and read how bad the situation was, jumping out of her seat and barking orders, while guiding Sy to a place he could lay her down and they could start working on her.
“What happened?” She asked Sy.
“I'm pretty sure she overdosed on these.” Sy replied, taking the prescription bottle out of his pocket and handed it to her. “I don't know why she decided to do it, I just found her unresponsive on the bathroom floor. She was responsive for a few minutes, but then stopped just before we got here.”
“How do you know her?” The nurse asked, reading the name off the bottle.
Sy bit his lip, he knew if he admitted that he only worked for Lily as a handyman, then they wouldn't let him see her until after they had done everything they could for her. So, he fibbed. “She's my fiancée.” He told her, his voice steady and his face gave away nothing, but his concern for her.
“So, her name is Lily Ana Moore?” The nurse asked, reading the name off the prescription label.
“Yes, ma'am.” Sy nodded, though he wasn't aware of her middle name.
“And, you are?” She asked, looking up at him.
“Austin Syverson.” He replied, glancing over to Lily's bed as she whimpered.
“We'll take the best care for her, Mr. Syverson.” the Nurse promised him, resting a gentle hand on his forearm and gave it a tender squeeze.
They tended to Lily, while Sy stepped out into the waiting room, he was too high strung and agitated to sit down, so he paced from the humming vending machine and the automatic doors. His mind roiled over reasons and scenarios as to why Lily would try to overdose. She had been fine, before he left to the hardware store for a new saw blade, playing tug-a-war with Aika and about to make them lunch. What could have happened in the, maybe, fifteen minutes he was away, that was so frightening that she would rather take her life, than to either face it or tell him about it. If she had said something to him, told him that she was afraid of something, or someone, then he would have promised to protect her.
In a heartbeat.
“I’ll protect her from now on.” He muttered to himself, still pacing the room.
Once they were satisfied with how stable she was, then sent her up to a private room for an overnight observation, Sy stayed with her the whole time, never leaving her side, even once she was stable and in her room. He sat in a chair beside her bed, chin resting on his chest as he snored softly, the room was dark and quiet, minus the heart monitor she was hooked up too. It was late, when Lily did finally come back around on her own, sighing and whimpering, her body feeling spent and sluggish. She opened her eyes and instantly recognized she wasn't in her own bed, but a strange room, and panic started to set it, causing her to wake Sy.
“Hey.” He sighed, rubbing his tired face and leaning forward to take her hand in his. “You're all right, Lily.” He told her, his voice rough from sleep.
“Where am I?” She asked, squeezing his hand, like it was a lifeline, calm now that she realized Sy was there, watching over her.
“The hospital.” He replied, thumb rubbing the top of her hand. “I barely managed to get you here, after that stunt you pulled.”
She let out a heavy breath and rested back against her pillow, squeezing her eyes shut. “I'm sorry, Sy.” She whispered, not opening her eyes again. “I didn't mean to scare you.”
“And what did you mean to do?” He asked, lifting a brow at her. “Why would you try killing yourself?”
“It's complicated.” She replied, sighing again and opening her eyes.
“Then, uncomplicate it.” Sy begged her, wanting to understand what she was thinking.
“I can't.” Lily shook her head, the fear that had gripped her before her attempt started to return.
Sy could feel the tremble in her hand as it gripped his, he knew there was something she was afraid of, that she was trying to run and hide from, and wanted to help her so much, to protect her, so badly. He got up out of his chair and sat on her bedside, holding her hand in his lap and gently brushed his fingers against her cheek.
“You don't have to be afraid.” He whispered, gently. “I promise, I will protect you.”
“Don't make a promise, you can't keep, Austin.” Lily replied, meeting his eye.
“I can, and I will.” Sy replied, his stomach twitched, hearing her use his first name. “Is there anything I can do for you?” He asked, lifting a brow at her.
Lily paused a moment, regarding him, then bit her lip. “Lay with me?” She whispered, gulping at the strangeness of her own request.
Sy blinked at her for a moment, it was a bit of an odd request, but, if that's what she wanted of him, then Sy would gladly do it. He nodded, feeling slightly awkward, then toed out of his boots, while she shifted and turned onto her side, so Sy had room to lay down with her. He let her shift, her back pressing against his chest, and tucked his arm under her head, gently pulling the blankets over them and resting his other arm over her side.
“This must be awkward for you.” She mumbled, a few minutes later.
“Actually, it's not.” He chuckled back, his breath lightly caressing the back of her hair. “The most awkward thing that I've ever done, happened on my very first deployment to Iraq.”
Lily turned her head to look back over at him. “Tell me about it?”
Sy smiled at her, biting his lip. “So, it was my first deployment, back in 2004, I had been in the country a week, but hadn't left base yet in that time.” He started to explain to her. “So, my first outing off the base was a decent distance, and at some point, I ended up needing to go to the restroom.”
She laughed, starting to get the picture, making Sy smile.
“Now, I wasn't naive. I knew there wasn't a bathroom for several klicks, and I doubted any of the locals were going to let my ass in to use their bathroom.” He laughed, making them both shake from its mirth. “So, I asked my commander, cause then, I was just some lowly runt, where I could go. He walked away for a moment and came back, carrying a short handled shovel, handed it to me and said, 'pick a spot.' motioning to the wide open field we were in.”
“Oh lord, no.” She grinned, blushing at the thought of digging a random hole and going in it. “Tell me you didn't!”
“Of course, I did!” He grinned back. “I really had to go, and I wasn't holding it for another hour on patrol and three hours back. So, I dug a hole, dropped my cameos and did my business, with six guys, more or less, watching me.”
“Watching you?”
“Well, they had to make sure no one snuck up on me, and tried to kill me.” He chuckled, fully amused.
“You're braver than I am.” Lily said, after they stopped laughing. “I would have held it.” She giggled, shaking her head at the thought, relaxing in his arms.
“I think that makes you much braver.” Sy whispered, feeling the change in her breathing against the skin of his bicep as she drifted back off to sleep. “So much braver.”
“Sy, you can't sleep on the couch like this.” Lily sighed, finding him on the couch in the living room.
Ever since she returned home from the hospital, Sy insisted on sleeping on the couch, not wanting to leave her alone in the house. She had tried convincing him that she was all right, that he didn't need to sleep there and keep an eye on her.
“You should go home to Austin, sleep in your own bed.” She told him, handing him a cup of fresh coffee.
“I haven't slept in my own bed, in nearly a month.” Sy replied, taking several deep gulps of the hot brew.
“What?” Lily snapped, sitting down beside him, with a cup of tea. “Still!”
“I told you, I've been sleeping at the motel in Celina.” He confessed to her. “I've been too tired most nights to safely drive back to Austin, and it's only a couple minutes from here, instead of three hours.” He told her, rubbing a hand over his face.
“And I told you, you didn't need too, Sy?” Lily sighed, annoyed with him.
“Because, you would have wanted to pay for it.” He countered.
“No, I would have given you the guest room upstairs, like I said.” She countered back, lifting a brow at him. “And, if you insist on staying here, then I suggest you take the room, instead of the couch, so at least then, you can stretch out and not wake up all stiff and uncomfortable.” She told him, firmly.
“Especially, since Aika seems to enjoy sleeping with you.”
Lily had come downstairs at night, several times, to find Sy's long body stretched out on the couch, his head resting on one armrest, while his feet hung over the other one, and Aika's large body laid on top of him, like some sort of furry blanket.
“I've already made it up for you.” She added, getting back up and going into the kitchen.
Sy got up and followed her, setting his coffee down on the breakfast nook table. “Lily-”
“We both know, you're not going to leave me alone in the house, Austin.” Lily huffed, yanking open the refrigerator door. “So, there's no use for your additional discomfort, by sleeping on a couch that has zero support or comfort, especially after you've spent all day breaking your back to fix up my property.” She explained to him, pulling out a carton of eggs and milk, before letting the door of the original Big Chill refrigerator slam shut behind her.
“There's a comfortable bed in the guestroom, that's situated against the window, with a small walk-in closet and dresser, as well as being across from the hallway bathroom. As I said, I made the bed up for you, clean sheets and pillowcases. I opened the window as well, to air it out, since it's usually closed up and unused.” She explained to him, pulling out a pan and setting it on the stove, clicking on the gas burner.
“I do need to warn you, that the hot water tap in the upstairs bathroom, doesn't work.”
“Is there something wrong with the hot water heater?” Sy asked, lifting a brow at her.
“Not that I'm aware of, but I also don’t know crap about them, so I wouldn't know where to look or how to fix it, without replacing the thing completely. But, I don't think there is a problem with it.”
“Why's that?”
“Because, the hot water in all the sinks work, and the hot water in my master bathroom works as well.” She explained to him, whipping up a pancake batter, while the pan heated up. “I just don't understand why the hot water in that particular bathroom doesn't work.”
“Has it worked at any point, while you lived here?” Sy asked, watching her.
Lily paused and sighed, her brow creasing as she stared off in the middle distance for a moment, trying to recall. “I don't think so.” She finally replied, going back to the batter.
“Hm.” Sy frowned, his own brow deeply creased as he mauled over the numerous reasons the hot water wouldn't work. “I'll check it after breakfast.” He answered, pressing his lips together. “Do you need any help?” He asked, watching her fuss over the rest of breakfast.
“Yeah, can you flip the pancakes for me.” She nodded, side stepping the stove, so he could flip them.
Sy nodded, taking up the rubber spatula she was using and gripped the handle of the pan, carefully working the edge of the spatula around the sides of the bubbling pancake, before slipping it under and flipped it, quite unsuccessfully, splattering half cooked batter all over the pan. Lily saw it from the corner of her eye and laughed, shaking her head at him.
“Have you never flipped a pancake before, Captain?” She teased, turning to face him.
“I have, I'm just shit at it.” He replied, grinning at her, but Lily could see the warmth seeping into his hairy cheeks.
“Here.”
Lily stepped between Sy and the stove, gripping his hand, that still held the utensil, and guided him to the other pancake in the pan, gently slipping the edge of the spatula under it, and with a quick flick of their wrists, she helped him flip over the pancake, perfectly.
“See?” She smiled up at him, her blue eyes filled with pride. “You just have to do it quick and steady, like ripping off a plaster.” She picked up the batter and poured some of it into the sizzling pan. “Give it a minute, then try flipping it again.”
With that, she turned back to what she was doing, dicing up some potatoes. “Look at you!” She exclaimed, watching Sy's smooth pancake flip.
“You're a good teacher.” He smiled at her, setting the finished pancakes on a plate beside the stove.
“Would you like bacon or sausage?” She asked, opening the refrigerator again, turning her head to look at him, a brow lifted in curiosity.
Sy licked his lips and got a funny feeling in his stomach, something he had never felt before, not even as a young boy. He felt like he—belonged, here and now, with Lily. It was a natural feeling of domestic belonging, like there was a oneness between them and he had found his rightful place in the world.
“Sy?” Lily frowned at him, concerned.
She saw that far off look in his eye and worried he was having a flashback. She had seen him have them before, and after the first one, where he nearly took her head off, Lily learned not to touch Sy, calling his name, usually, did the trick of bringing him back around. But, this time was different, there was a sparkle in his cerulean eyes, and a soft smile on his lips.
“Austin?” She said, carefully, licking her lips and feeling butterflies in her stomach.
Sy blinked several times and focused on her, smiling completely, warm and happy. “Sausage, please.” He finally replied, cocking his head at her.
“Okay.” Lily nodded back, eyes wide like a doe's. “Why don't you sit down and relax, I can finish up.” She suggested, motioning to the table. “Your coffee is getting cold.”
“Sure.”
He kept smiling at her, even as he sat down at the table and sipped his cooling coffee; watching her drop the finely diced potatoes into the pan, stirring them around as they cooked and browned, before cracking three eggs on the edge of the pan and dumped the contents in with the potatoes, then tossed the shells into the empty bowl the pancake batter was in. She kept stirring the browned potatoes and fluffy eggs together, then added sliced up sausage. Finishing it up, she brought the food to the table and Sy served himself, heaping the potato, egg and sausage scramble onto his plate with four large pancakes, drizzling maple syrup everywhere. Lily picked Sy's now empty coffee cup up and filled it with fresh coffee, putting in two sugars and set it back down in front of his plate.
“You know how I take my coffee.” He asked, digging his fork into his mountain of food.
“I've known you for several months at this point, so, it's only natural that I've noticed things about you.” She chuckled, sitting down and making her own plate for breakfast.
“Fair enough.” He laughed, and got down to eating.
After breakfast, and helping Lily wash and dry the dishes, Sy went upstairs to the hallway bathroom to try and figure out why the hot water wasn't coming out of the tap. He tested it, spinning the hot tap all the way over, water jetting out of the shower head. He left it running for several long minutes, touching it periodically, and only found it to be even colder than when it first came out. Pressing his lips together and sighing through his nose, Sy turned the tap off and went downstairs to his truck, taking out the tool box from the back and carried it back inside, removing the faucet cover and checked the valve. He removed the tap handle, unscrewed the plate and reached inside for the valve, finding it was broken.
“There you are, you pesky little shit.” He said, setting it on the sink counter. “I need a new one.” He sighed. “Lily.” He called out, going down the hall to her office.
“Sy?” She called back, her eyes still on the work on her computer screen.
“I found the problem with the shower in the hall bath.” He told her, standing in the office doorway. “I'm going to go down to the hardware store to get a replacement part for it.” He explained, looking her over as she sat cross legged in her office chair.
“Will you be okay, while I'm gone?” He asked, his tone careful.
Lily's shoulders slumped and she looked over at him. “I'll be fine, Austin.” She told him, slightly annoyed with him being so overprotective, though she appreciated it and felt incredibly safe with him around. “Go, and if you remember, can you bring me back some Reese cups?” She asked, as he turned to leave.
“I've got a mad chocolate craving going on.”
“A hot shower and chocolate coming up.” He grinned at her, and left for the store. “Keep an eye on her, Aika.” He whispered to the pup as she laid spread out on the front porch, enjoying the warm rays of the sun; patting her on the head.
Aika huffed at him, before getting up and strolling inside, climbing the stairs and wandering into Lily's office, then laid down at her feet, dropping back off to sleep. Lily smiled down at her, bending in her chair to pat her between her proudly standing ears, then returned to her work. Sy returned an hour later, with four packages of king sized Reese Cups and the replacement hot water valve.
“Christ.” Lily laughed, when he set the candy down in front of her. “Did you buy the store out?” She teased, looking up at him.
“Actually,” Sy grinned brazenly at her. “I did. It was all they had in the little corner store, next to the hardware store.” He confessed, he thought it would be funny to buy them all, and one can never have enough chocolate.
“Thank you.” She giggled, opening one of them up, amused by his sense of humor and popped one into her mouth..
“You're welcome.” Sy nodded his head to her, butterflies filling his stomach hearing her laugh, making her laugh, and gulped as he watched her take the candy whole into her mouth, feeling something stir much lower than his stomach, before turning and going back to fix the shower.
“Is it working?” Lily asked, a little while later, coming into the bathroom to watch him work.
“See for yourself.” Sy replied, turning the tap on and stepping aside.
Lily stepped forward and held her hand out under the streaming water, feeling the pleasant warmth of it. She looked over her shoulder at Sy and smiled at him, proud and amazed. “That's amazing! Is there anything you can't fix?” She asked, drying her hand on the towel hanging on the rack.
“Oh, I'm sure there is.” Sy smiled, leaning back against the vanity. “But, if I encounter it, I'm sure I could figure it out.”
“I'm sure you would.” Lily smiled, patting him on the chest as she went out of the bathroom.
Sy beamed with pride, seeing how happy and proud of him she was, her gentle pat only re-enforcing that fact.
Later that night, Sy took the duffle bag he had filled with his clothing and other things he needed, upstairs to Lily's offered guestroom. It was a sweet little room, the window let in a lot of light during the day and he could see Billie Marlowe's crops and the beautiful night sky as he laid in bed. The dresser was big enough for all his things. He toed out of his boots and sat down on the edge of the bed, then laid back. It was a comfortable bed, more comfortable than the couch and the bed in the motel room he had been renting.
Satisfied, Sy stood, pulled out a pair of shorts and a black tank top, with a bar of soap, and crossed the hall to the bathroom.
He stood under the hot spray of the shower head, letting it seep into his tired and sore body for a while, before soaping up his body, head to toe, rinsed and dressed, before stepping out of the steamy bathroom. He paused in the hall and turned his head, Lily's room was at the end of the hall, the staircase leading into the kitchen between them, and her door was closed. But, he could hear the soft creaks of her moving about her room, no doubt doing the similar ritual he was, before going off to sleep.
Sighing, he went into his room, leaving the door cracked open for Aika to come in and out, and crawled into bed, the washed sheets and quilt smelled just like Lily, and he couldn't suppress the moan that escaped from deep in his throat, pressing the quilt to his nose and inhaling deeply. She smelled amazing, he wondered what her skin smelled like, before drifting off.
Lily wasn't sure what time it was, when she first heard it. At first, she thought it was just part of the dream she was having, but as it came more regularly, she realized it wasn't in her dream, but in the house. Her eyes opened, blinking in the darkness of her room as she laid still in bed, listening intently.
Yes, it was real and in the house, but what was it?
Shaking her head, she threw her blankets back and got out of bed, tiptoeing to her closed door and pressed her ear to the wood. It was a loud whimper, followed by a whine, with other noises mixed in. Daring to open her door, she stepped out into the hall and slowly followed the noise, down to Sy's room. She pushed open his half open door and peeked inside, Aika was sitting on the side of the bed, whining as she looked up at Sy, who was laying on his back, sweaty brow deeply creased and shaking his head, like he was trying to wake himself up, to no avail.
“Move.” He called out, body jerking. “Tristan.” He yelled out, then whined.
“Sy.” She called out to him, standing in the doorway. “Sy, wake up.”
But, he didn't.
Biting her lip, and stepping into the fray, Lily moved to the side of the bed, her stomach clenched as she sat down beside him, waiting for him to suddenly lunge at her, but he didn't. Her heart was pounding as she reached out and gently wiped away the heavy sweat on his brow, he made a sound, between a sigh and a growl as she did, his hands coming up, but fell back to the bed, before reaching her. She frowned at him, stroking the side of his face, his hair was slightly longer than it had been, when he first came. He usually kept it very short, but with her going into the hospital, he had neglected cutting it.
She touched the side of his head, feeling the soft hair just above his ear, then petting down his neck and cupping his cheek.
“It's all right.” She cooed at him in a soft and silky voice. “Ssshh, it's all right.” She spoke to him softly, caressing his bearded cheek with her thumb and rubbed his chest through the thin black material of his tank top.
Sy's wide and alarmed eyes shot open and he snapped upright, gasping for air and shaking, but he didn't lash out at her, like he had on the porch that day. She bit her lip, watching this bear of a man tremble, struggling to control his breathing and so frightened. Lily laid her hand on his tense shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze; Sy's head snapped to the side, looking at her, but not quite seeing her, but the face of the teammate he had been calling out for, one of the first men Sy had ever lost in combat.
“Lily.” He whispered, in a disembodied voice. “What are you doing here?” He asked, suddenly sounding alarmed and panicked, his sweaty body rigid. “It’s not safe, you have to leave, before more of them show up.” He told her, his voice still sounding discorporated.
“Who, Austin?” Lily frowned, shaking her head at him, not understanding what he was talking about. “Who’s coming?”
Sy’s vision hyper-focused on the small gap between them, twitching quickly side to side, like he was trying to reconnect unplugged wires in his jumbled up and confused mind, struggling to remember if he was in reality with Lily or in the nightmare of a long ago mission in Iraq that had gone bad for everyone involved, changing Sy forever, the first hung thread in a thick web of PTSD and flashbacks. But, the gentle touch of Lily’s hands on him, the soft whisper of his name in her voice, the close warmth of her body and her sweet smell gave Sy the traction he needed to pull himself back to reality and consciousness.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered, biting his lip, self-conscious. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“It’s all right.” She replied, then wrapped her arms around him, hugging him against her and rubbing his back. “It's okay, Austin.” She whispered into his ear as he buried his face into her neck. “You're okay. Safe and sound, back home, and with me.” She told him, closing her eyes as his arms wrapped around her waist and he clutched her against his sweaty and shaking body.
“I've got you, Austin.” She assured him and rested her cheek against his temple, tenderly rubbing the back of his head. “I won't let anything happen.”
Sy nuzzled his face into her neck, taking deep breaths to calm himself down and took in the comforting scent of her skin as he did, it helped him relax, as did the soft words she whispered into his ear and the soothing touch of her hand on his head or on his back. He didn't want to let her go, afraid that as soon as he did, she would fade away and the nightmares would come back, having only tricked him into thinking it was her.
Even though her heart thundered in her chest, she made a choice. “Come on, Austin.” She said into his ear, patting him on the back and wiggling in his arms, trying to entice him to let her go, so she could stand up.
“Where?” He whimpered into her neck.
She licked her lips. “Come to bed with me.” She told him, her lips brushing the rim of his earlobe. “Let me hold you and keep the nightmares away.”
Sy moaned softly into her ear, but his arms secured themselves around her waist, shifting her into his lap and stood, picking her up, still very unwilling to let her go, even for the minute it would take to go down to her room. So, he carried her down the hall and laid down in her bed, only then, letting her go long enough for her to cover them up and lay down beside him. Sy turned onto his side, wrapping his arms around her and hugged her against his body, his head laying on her chest.
Lily frowned, sympathetically, down at Sy, caressing his head, neck and shoulders, whispering soft things to him, soothing and lulling him back to sleep, with the pound of her heart in his ear and the pillow-y warmth of her skin and breasts under his head.
“My sweet bear.” She cooed at his sleeping form, then kissed the top of his head.
