Hard day at the office yesterday! Pembroke glacier in the distance, which feeds Stirling Falls in Milford Sound, said to have rejuvenating properties, I do in fact feel 10 years younger today 💁 Oh and we saw one if the rarest penguins in the world waddle up the beach 👌🐧 #southerndiscoveries #discovermilfordsound #kayaking #travelnz (at Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park)

Magical Milford - Feb 2014
My journey to Milford Sounds started on a drenched Invercargill morning but after the hard-ish labouring at Rainbow Mansions it was lovely to just chill out whilst the bus driver did all the work. (Somehow a lot of my NZ departures took place on days when the sky was bawling its eyes out… Symbolic of my feelings…?)
By the time we reached Milford the evening could not have been more beautiful. The mountain tops were shrouded in light clouds with the sky sparkling blue above them. The sun shone bright in between the clouds and the air was thick with… Sandflies!
Whilst obsessing about getting the right angles for a Milford selfie a pesky little sandfly found a tiny spot that I had “missed” when spreading repellant and promptly sunk it’s sting right into the corner of my eye! I tried to ignore the fact that all my sandfly bites to date had become very itchy and swollen… “Luckily” it took a good 24h to feel the effects of the enormity so that I could enjoy Milford in all its glory, in all four seasons. Highlights include:
- Seeing the sun set over snow covered mountains turning them pink and purple. - Meeting barman Louis from Brighton at the Blue Duck Cafe who gave me a freebie ticket to the Milford Underwater Observatory! Cheers Louis. - Observing the various sea creatures 10 meters underwater, including Ziggy the Starfish. - Taking the Southern Discoveries morning cruise. - Seeing a school of dolphins jump up from the sea and managing to take a shot of them swimming along the boat. - Getting “showered” in the Fairy Falls. - Experiencing the Milford fog. - Seeing the white veins of Milford appear on the mountains, occurrence that only happens when the rain is very heavy.
After 24h of Milford magic, it was time to go back to Te Anau for one night before heading to Queenstown. Waking up in Te Anau YHA my eye had pretty much swollen shut…just in time for my Arrowtown break. o_O
Ps. The best cure for any eye related insect bites are strong antihistamines. Luckily the pharmacies in NZ sell some pretty good meds that work quickly! :)
