Cowboy Bebop (1998)
Red Boots
Lewis kicked up the dirt as he ran back to the house as quickly as he could. His mama had just called him, saying she had a present for him. As much as he wanted to watch the cows wander the fields, he wanted to see what mama had for him more.
When he got back to the house, he saw a small brown box on the porch table with mama standing beside it. Keeping his eyes on the box, he ran straight to mama and hugged her with all the strength his little body could.
“Mama, can I open it?” he asked, eyes glittering with anticipation as he inched as close as he could without letting go of mama.
“Of course, baby,” Mama smiled down at Lewis, “it's for you.”
“Thank you, Mama,” Lewis mumbled. Suddenly feeling a bit shy, Lewis hid his face in her skirt.
Mama gently pried him away and pushed him towards the box on the table. Lewis reached out to it, peeking back at her as he did, then slowly took the lid off.
Inside the box was a pair of red boots, the exact same red as his hair.
“Boots Mama! They’re so cool!” he exclaimed, bouncing on his heels. His fingers traced the patterns at the top of the boots, intricately woven just for him.
“You can put them on, dear,” Mama laughed as she lightly stroked his hair.
Lewis glanced up at his mama, then, seeing her smile down at him and give a light nod of assurance, he grabbed the box and plopped down on the porch. He put the boots on quickly but was also careful not to scuff them.
When he was done, he hopped up and stood up proudly, showing off his new boots to Mama.
“I love my new boots, Mama! Thank you, thank you!” he said as he bounced on his toes to try out his new boots.
“You're welcome, baby,” Mama smiled.
…
Lewis winced as the door banged against the wall as he entered the bar. He paused as most of the patrons turned to look at him, quickly forcing himself to move before their stares became too suffocating. He walked up to the bar and waited for the barkeep to notice him, leaning heavily on the counter to take some pressure off his legs.
“Funny getup you got there” a large brutish alien snickered, leaning into Lewis’s space. “Gotta thing for tassels” he said then flicked some of the fringe from Lewis’s shawl on his shoulder.
“You could say that” Lewis huffed and discreetly turned his shoulder out of the aliens reach. Not discreetly enough apparently because the beast of an alien defenfenetly noticed, reaching out his hand indignently. Before the alien could touch him Lewis whipped out his gun and pressed it to the aliens wrist.
“Watch your hand!” Lewis groweled, staring up at the brute from under his hat. “Or you’ll loose it.” he finished, his eyes searching the aliens face for any sign of further attack. Then satisfide to find the brute backing down, he spun his gun around his finger before sliding it into it's holster.
“Barkeep,” he nodded to the barkeep who had paused what he was doing to watch the commotion. “I’ll take a room upstairs” Lewis slid two creddits to the barkeep, then grabbed the keycard he handed him. Lewis then stepped around the still shocked alien and walked to the stairs to the guest rooms. The whole room watching as he went. Great, an audience again. He grimaced to himself and walked up the stairs.
When he got to his room he tapped the keycard to the door handle. It blipped a bright green and he heard a soft click before he turned the handle and opened the door.
Lewis entered the room and dropped his poncho and hat on the small table that was provided with the room, then almost stumbled on his way to the bed. He landed heavily on the bed, grateful to finally be off his legs. He took a moment to rest then got to work taking off his chaps, unbuckling them then sliding them off, revealing his two prosthetic legs. They went up to his upper thigh, black, heavy and filled with technology far beond his understanding.
Gently Lewis slid off the first one, grateful that what was left of his leg could finally breath. Setting it aside he took off the other one as well, happy he no longer has to deal with the pressure of his prosthetics.
Lewis slowly massaged his thighs as he settled back into the feeling of not having legs again. His eyes wandered to the bottom of his prosthetics where the feet should be. Where the toe should be was raised to a point and the heel was an inch high heel. They were cowboy boots, built into the metal.
For some reason he thought of the day his ma bought him his red boots. How he was so happy they matched his red hair. He wore them till they broke, and even then he begged his ma to let him keep wearing them, saying ‘they’re only a little broken!’
Lewis flopped back on the bed, dropping his arm over his eyes as a few tears dripped down past his ears.
“Mama,” he whispered, “I miss my boots.”
