For its many faults, between the lacking culture of safety, to its mismatched management and engineering corps, to its success vs. failure rate, the space shuttle program still produced one hell of an awe inspiring orbital vehicle and launch stack.

I’m not sure you will guess what these pics are...
They are photos of photos of a space shuttle taking off!
Back in the 1990′s my father was on the school board and there was some sort of convention in Orlando. Mom and I drove down to join him, and while he had meetings we went to Disney World.
It turned out that there was going to be a space shuttle launch the night before Mom had to be back home. Obviously we decided to just go without sleep. We’d go see the launch, hug Pop goodbye, and then drive. It turns out even I don’t mind driving on I-95 in the wee hours of the morning!
And so, for the one and only time in my life, I got to see a space shuttle launch! The light in the darkness, the power rumbling through you, to say it was impressive is an understatement.
I didn’t remember if I had taken an pics, but recently I found a box full of photos long forgotten. They were stuck together, so I spent an evening prying them apart. And there these were!
I had my original 35mm camera I got when I was about 13. No tripod or telephoto lens, and a good old fashion manual focus. Considering I had no experience with taking pics of this sort of thing, they aren’t too bad.
Not having a scanner I just took photos of those old pics to post them here. They look a bit more fuzzy, but I hope you don’t mind me sharing!
