Class Feature Friday: Arcanimirium Sage (Starfinder Archetype)

 Today’s a little different on CFF, because we’re looking at one of the archetypes for characters in Starfinder, rather than a class option.

I decided to do it this way since archetypes work very differently in Starfinder, being ability sets that any class can take in exchange for a few set abilities removed from the normal progression of their class.

This means that in theory, anyone could take almost any archetype, so the question suddenly becomes “How does this make sense with this class and archetype combination?

Maybe someday we’ll also see archetypes that specifically interact with only a few classes, but for now, let’s see what we have.

The Arcanimirium is a college of magical study on Absalom Station that shares its name with a similar institution back in the original Absalim on lost Golarion. The modern institute focuses on gaining a greater understanding of magic, both modern and ancient, by studying the most common examples of surviving ancient magic: the various magical items that the university collects and seeks out.

Sages from this university collect magic items for personal and research use, and their experimentation has led to several techniques by which the magical powers of such items can be altered and used in unique ways, giving them unparalleled control.

 These scholars have developed quite a library of knowledge on magical items, allowing them to identify most with mere mundane observation. However, to puzzle out trickier items, they learn the magical tricks required to help lay the information bare to the, either gaining a spell of identification to their spells known, or gaining the minor magical talent to do so. What’s more, the prestige of being from the Arcanimirium opens up more powerful and expensive magic items for purchase much sooner.

Mastering spell gems, the spellcasters among these sages can use the information in such a gem as a template for their own magics, casting the spell using their own power once a day, rather than expending the gem. Meanwhile, non-spellcasters instead learn the secrets of casting spell gems without risk of failure. Furthermore they also learn how to get a read on the immediate future using a spell or spell-like ability.

Normally in the era of Starfinder, one can only wear two magic items that aren’t separate objects or built into armor or augmentations, but these sages can balance the conflicting auras to wear three. What’s more, they also learn the secret to using magic to see magic auras with great clarity.

Channeling their resolve, more powerful sages can recharge items with limited daily use so that they may be used again.

The most powerful, however, can wear a grand total of four magical items on their person without trouble.

If you’re really interested in having a lot of magical items and a greater understanding of them, this archetype may be what you’re looking for. Obviously, mystics and technomancers are the obvious choice for what class to combine with the archetype, but I can imagine magical operatives mimicking the gadgeteer rogues of old, charming scholar envoys, magically-kitted out soldiers and solarions, and even wannabe-technomancer mechanics wishing to understand the forces of the universe.

 Regardless of career path, this archetype does certainly imply a scholarly mind and at least some standing in academic circles. Whether they are field researcher, innovator, or something else, their respect for magic and knowledge should shine through, even if they’re only in it for more magic items.

  Following clues to a distant asteroid field, the party accompanies their charge, the technomancer sage that hired them, to a hidden temple on one of the planetoids. However, this field is rife with void fishers, vacuum predators known for extending nearly-invisible filaments to envenom and reel in prey.

 Inspired by the stories of pyromancers of old, Niska sought out the path of the technomancer and sage to better understand the art of conjuring fire and heat from nothing. In particular, she would love to unlock the rare secret of producing flames so hot that not even heat-immune creatures can ignore.

 Their headquarters located on a rocky high-gravity world, the Order of the Eldritch Knight seeks to blend martial prowess with arcane study like their namesake and the magi and esoteric knights of old, and so also keep one of the largest libraries of magical lore and artifacts in the cluster. Soldiers, solarions, and other non-spellcasters can learn a lot by enrolling in their basic course.
