imagine dean and cas as teenagers. one day dean convinces cas to come with him to the public pool after midnight and they have their first kiss there while staring at the stars and sharing their deepest thoughts.
wow okay anon thank you so much for sharing this with me. i’m usually not one for so much aus but this is too cute and you fired up my brain right away good work i thought it was pretty much toast for today
“Dean, we’re not supposed to be here. This is trespassing,” Cas muttered through the dark, but Dean could hear in his voice that he was excited too. It wasn’t that Cas was a complete goodie-two-shoes, but he had definitely been heavily influenced by meeting Dean. Sometimes he needed a push, but Dean knew that if he batted his eyelashes Cas would go through fire with him if Dean promised they could have fun.
“C’mon, cas. It’s not even like it’s the law. It’s more like - a guideline, telling us to keep out,” Dean grinned and bumped his shoulder against Cas’ as they made their way over the small patch of grass leading up to the fence. Dean knew a guy who worked there and he had been tipped off that if he wiggled it a little they could easily sneak through.
It was dark except for the spots casting light over the parking lot. It was just enough or them to see where they were going, but not enough for them to be bothered by the heavy duty lights hitting Dean’s car.
Dean snuck his way through the two gates that were locked together by a big chain. It was almost like they wanted someone to get in there after hours. “If I can get through, you can get through,” Dean grinned and grabbed Cas’ wrist to guide him through. He had been excited about this for days now. Ever since his friend told him how the workers knew how to sneak in there at night, and that this particular night they would all be busy elsewhere for a staff party. It was perfect.
As soon as Cas was safely through Dean shot Cas a broad grin and rushed toward the pool. He pulled away the cover just enough to make triangle free for them to swim around, and then hurried to strip down to his underwear. Dean didn’t waste any time and jumped in right away, the water chilling him to his core as he first hit surface, but after diving head all the way down his body adjusted.
Turning around Dean watched as Cas carefully sat on the poolside before slipping down. Before he knew it Cas had grabbed his wrist under the water and Dean face him with a smile. “It’s not so bad, is it?” He smiled at Cas, and let his hand slide around, making their fingers intertwine. They hadn’t done that before, held hands, and Dean could feel a change in Cas when their fingers locked.
“Is this okay?” He asked, this time quietly, and he realized they were chest to chest, and his eyes met Cas’ through the dark. Even in the dark he could see how blue Cas’ eyes were, and the stars were dancing around his corneas. His cheeks were a little flushed, and Dean wasn’t sure whether it was because of the water being too hot, or if it was because of their locked hands.
“Yeah. This is - very nice,” Cas smiled and squeezed Dean’s hand. He looked up for a moment, taking in the sight of the dark sky with a handful of stars spread over their heads. It always seemed to Dean like he was longing for something whenever he looked up, and Dean never tired of watching Cas observe the sky.
Very abruptly, though, Cas looked back to Dean, seeming like he was holding his breath. They were caught in the corner of the pool, their bodies flushed against each other, and it wasn’t until their eyes met again that it really occurred to Dean how close they were, how intimate this was. They had been best friends for a long time, and they had shared hugs and beds and sometimes fallen asleep against each other on the couch - but this was different. This was a different kind of closeness, like the air around them was a softer, protecting space.
“Dean, can I kiss you?” Cas finally asked, and it was as if he had rehearsed it over and over again in his mind, maybe even out loud at home in his room. Like it had been waiting at the tip of his tongue for ages, but the time had never been quite right to let it leave his mouth. Dean had never really thought about what it would be like to kiss Cas - at least not as directly.
Sure, he had wondered why the feelings he had for Cas were stronger, different, than those he had for his other friends. He knew that he loved Cas, but it wasn’t the same kind of love that he had for Sammy. It wasn’t even the same kind of love he had for Stacey, the girl he had dated and gotten to second base with a couple of months ago. No, what he felt for her was a crush.
But Cas made his heart jump. When Cas was sad it made Dean feel an aching in his chest that wouldn’t be cured until he had found a way to make Cas smile again. When Cas fell asleep with his head on Dean’s shoulder during movie nights it made Dean smile and think he was adorable, and when their hands touched when sharing popcorn at the movies Dean’s stomach would dance a mambo. And when they had a sleepover and Dean would wake up with Cas cradling his face because he had a bad dream all the monsters disappeared and he was safe in Cas’ hands.
If anything could possibly be love, this surely had to be it.
And this was completely new territory for Dean. He was the one to flirt with the girl, he was the one to make the girls weak in the knees, he was the one who made them giggle and blush when he winked at them - and he was the one to kiss a girl and make her feel special. Even if it was just for one night.
Yet, here he was; breathless and skin-to-skin with his best friend holding his hand, his brain feeling like it was melting and his heart waiting to pound right out of his chest like a train going off tracks. He was suddenly worried if his breathe smelled like the burger he ate for dinner, and why his mouth had to go dry just now. He wanted to say yes, he wanted to move in and demand the kiss, but all he could do was meet those blue eyes and give a small nod - a confirmation of trust.
For all Dean knew Cas had only ever kissed Maria during that game of Spin The Bottle last year, and he hadn’t seemed to particularly like it. But Dean remembered that he couldn’t look at it. He had to look away. He had gotten to his feet and left the room, telling people he was out of beer. When really it was because his throat had been in knots and he wanted to kick over a chair.
Now he knew why. The only person Cas was ever allowed to kiss was him. Dean couldn’t bear it any other way.
So many thoughts and when it finally happened it was like electricity ran through Dean’s veins. Cas’ lips were as soft as they looked, and they were gentle and testing, until Dean strengthened his grip on his friend’s hand. Then it was like something changed in Cas.
A hand was cupping Dean’s jaw as the lips pressed firmer. They were determined, like Cas was channeling all that time he had been waiting to do this into this one first kiss. And for the first time in his life Dean really let go. He gave up control of the situation, let Cas’ lips lead his own and decide how hard or tender they should move. Because with Cas he didn’t need to take control, because Cas was the only one Dean knew would catch him if he should fall without the tight ropes he had set for himself.
It was liberating, and when Cas’ tongue touched Dean’s it was practically euphoric. Unable to stop himself Dean let his free hand press onto the lower of Cas’ back, making their bodies pressed firm and slippery against one another, chests almost not capable of doing their duty of breathing, and it was with a gasp of need for air they broke apart.
“Hey, I got you,” Cas assured him tenderly, and Dean realized he had been slipping, now only held up by Cas’ one arm around his waist, resting on the poolside to keep them both afloat.
“Well…. That was new,” Dean chuckled, his fingers curling against the skin of Cas’ back. Between them Cas kept their eyes locked, like he was searching to be sure he hadn’t crossed a line. His face was serious, like when he was having a silent debate with himself - but then his face cracked in a grin.
“A good kind of new, I hope. I mean… I certainly wouldn’t oppose to exploring more of that,” he smiled, stars twinkling in his eyes, and Dean couldn’t help but laugh. He laughed so much his stomach hurt, and the best of all was that Cas was laughing with him. Their bodies vibrating together, and the water around them swashing around them.
“Yeah. Yeah, we are definitely gonna explore more of this,” Dean agreed and dove back in for more kisses.
