Just a quick introduction to the glitch pokemon in the gold/silver demo! The five pairs of pictures match up with the five species listed below.
xFC
This guy is tricky. He’ll revert to Bulbasaur after I capture him in the wild, so I tried patching him into my party with a Gameshark code. I can send him out, but once I do, the game always hangs. Can’t look at his stats screen either or rare candy him.
xFD
This is a glitch egg, basically when egg data is forced to be encountered as a species of pokemon. I could capture it and get a pokedex entry, like FC, but he reverted to Bulbasaur after that. Once I captured him a second time, though, I could get him. It seems reverting to Bulbasaur is similar to the Rhydon glitch in gen 1. I think the same trick works for getting FC, but FC’s second capture always freezes the game.
He has variable backsprites– what it looks like depends on the pokemon he’s facing. Some foes will cause the game to hang or crash when sending xFD out (such as Hypno or Drowzee) after some wicked sound glitches. Other foes won’t crash the game but might distort the sounds quite a bit (such as Ekans). It appears xFD learns no moves on level-up.
xFE
Wow, this critter is volitile, much like FC. Interacting with him in any way seems to crash the game. I send him out into battle, but the game hangs. Trying to use rare candy on him crashes the game. Trying to view his stats crashes the game. Trying to encounter him in battle … well, you get the idea. I’m still trying to find a way to work with him.
xFF
This species is fairly infamous. That is because he ‘cloaks’ any pokemon below him in the party and can be used to ‘smuggle’ Gen 2 pokemon via the Time Capsule over to Gen 1 games. He also can create ‘hybrids’ of pokemon. This is because the game sees xFF as the ‘cancel’ option in the pokemon party. In the Gold/Silver demo, he learns two moves upon level-up– Swords Dance (lvl 71) and Rollout (lvl 96).
x00
This fellow, named 9ム゙9ィ゙9, doesn’t seem to crash the game when triggering a wild encounter! However… it seems he cannot be caught in balls, even when I throw master balls at him. You can easily use the select glitch instead to obtain him, though. (The select glitch can also be used to obtain xFF.) He learns a variety of moves, including Fly, Horn Drill, Spark, and a glitchy move. He also tries to evolve into Pidgey at level 12.
