By the time his young master's soul had reached him, that soul had been tortured to the point that the humanity had basically been scraped out of it.
Since that day, whatever humanity managed to remain had been tested time and time again. He had seen countless cases of senseless cruelty, had been betrayed by his own family (on more than one occasion), and had taken a number of lives-- both by his own hand and by ordering the demon bound to him to do it for him.
One would think that soul inside him would have shattered-- or, at the very least, been so scarred over that there would be nothing of substance left.
And yet... there are times when his young master surprises him. His ability to hold on to enough of his humanity to say such words.
Well. That's why he was so committed to this singular soul, wasn't it?
