Murder drones nation how we feeling
Gwen has a broken crown because her kingdom isn't really hers. She's the face of it, titled the "princess", but she has no control over her situation nor anyone else's. She's a symbol with no power, trapped in violence.
But with her escape, her first true act is to protect her "subjects", to defend them. Gwen wants to take control over her life, and by consequence, control over the "kingdom".
Andi has a broken sword, and Frankie has a broken shield.
Andi is someone that has been badgered down by life so much, she no longer fights against it. Andi took a job that she knows makes her just a cog in the corruption, but she just thinks of it as something inevitable. She recognizes the problems with the park, with society in general, and sees it as so huge and unfixable that she's given up on even entertaining the idea of fighting against it.
Frankie is a dreamer in a world that doesn't support that, especially for those in poverty. By being idealistic in her situation, it leaves herself vulnerable to getting hurt. She's stumbled her way into mingling with people that will keep her in line with violence, working tirelessly to work for a place she idealizes, not realizing that due to her lack of conformity they wouldn't hire her as is. She's built no walls around herself to defend against the harshness of the world.
But despite this, their instincts to protect and defend each other remain, and this is something they show time and time again.
For example, in this scene, when facing off against Sparky. When he approaches them, Andi moves behind Frankie (the shield), leaving Frankie to be the first line of defense. Sparky is listing off the many reasons why giving Gwen up will benefit not only him but her, but Frankie is unyielding. Then when Sparky attacks, Frankie performs solely defensive moves, dodging and blocking attacks, all while making sure nothing hits Gwen. It's even commented on by Sparky, after she bites him, how she never seems to "fight back proper". But after Frankie goes down, Andi, thanks to Frankie kicking the weapon out of Sparky's hand, is now armed (the sword), and wastes no time pointing it at Sparky. She goes on the offense, listing proper reasons why he should let them do this, how it'll benefit him as well, until he relents.
Frankie is able to be the shield because of her idealism. She provides the strong foundation, the belief in the idea to see it through to the end despite what might happen. And Andi was able to go on the offense because she understands reality all too well, able to "slice" through the obstacles the world will throw at them through this idealism.
It seems to all be leading up to how they're pledging their "allegiance" to Gwen, rather than the park. Their "allegiance" to who she is meant to be rather than what the park is forcing her to be.
