Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) (2024) dir. Kiran Rao pd. Aamir Khan
4/5
Wholesome, funny, and touching, this well-made film made by reliable star Aamir Khan and erstwhile partner Kiran Rao is ostensibly a lovestory/romcom of mistaken identity with a hopeful message about the agency of rural Indian women and women's empowerment. You might also catch the subtle notes on farmer's rights, and Vandana Shiva's brand of ecofeminism. There's a clever character arc on the suspected villain that's a pleasing development and some coming of age bildungsroman blended in. The cast featuring Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, Ravi Kishan, Sparsh Shrivastava and Chhaya Kadam, are all wonderful.
