Another Matt Rhodes trick. I believe he calls them cutout puppets? I would have to go back to his livestreams to be sure. Anyways you make simple and small cutouts of your characters. Ones that you can then use for reference of diffuse colors. While also being able to change their look over the timeline you have for them during their story. So I did it for Fire Team Quiver at around 2559 when they get their GEN3 MJOLNIR armors.
