How geography affects upward mobility Researchers examining geography's influence on upward mobility have found in a new study that location does seem to affect whether children in low-income families can leave poverty behind as they grow up. To reach their conclusions, researchers studied families who moved with children. "The data shows we can do something about upward mobility. Every extra year of childhood spent in a better neighborhood seems to matter," said Harvard professor Raj Chetty, one of the study's authors. The New York Times (5/4/2015)
