Keith just learned what mistletoe is for.
He was just trying to brood in the doorway and avoid party small talk, and now his mouth tastes like Lance's chapstick and he feels drunk as shit even though Allura mixed the drink he's nursing and she drank half the shot of vodka while making it.
(Lance is hiding in the bathroom leaning against the door with his hand on his chest and his heart pounding, staring at the mirror and trying to practice his "play it cool" face for when he goes back to the party.)
(Hunk is high-fiving Shiro for joking to Lance that he was a homophobe if he didn't go over there and kiss Keith.)
Keith's phone is buzzing now in his pocket and he's dazedly pulling it out to see an Instagram notification. (Pidge tagged him and Lance in a photo.) And now he's letting out a shaky breath with none of the oxygen having made it to his brain before leaving him again, and he's getting another notification, and it's a fresh photo texted to him from Pidge, taken just now as he stared at the Instagram post. His face is crimson in the photo. It's crimson still. He can feel the blood burning through his skin.
He tries to finish his drink and as he's bringing the cup back down he nearly chokes as he tries to swallow, because Lance is there between one second and the next, grinning slyly at him and reaching for the empty red solo cup. He raises an eyebrow as Keith relinquishes the cup, and his eyes drag upward, past Keith's head and up the door frame. Fuck, he's still standing in the same spot. And it's still there. The mistletoe. God. Fuck. Shit. Fuck.
Lance's smirk grows, and Keith's never felt more flustered.
Lance says it smoothly. Easily. Nonchalantly. Like they didn't just kiss each other on the mouth on Christmas Day in front of all their friends. Like it wasn't a life-changing moment. Like Keith hadn't been reaching up and about to touch Lance's face right when he pulled away, and Keith hadn't snatched his hand back before making contact, brought back to himself from outer space like an out-of-control rocket crashing back to Earth.
"Uh....yeah," Keith replies, and yes his voice does crack, and yes he does hate himself for it.
Even with the 'yes,' he still lingers. "It's funny," Lance says. "You're still standing here... Almost like you want me to kiss you again or something." Keith opens his mouth to retort with something scathing, but Lance just laughs and goes on, "It's okay, I'll settle for an indirect kiss this time." He shakes Keith's cup, peeking at the tiny remainder of drink at the bottom, then raises the cup to his lips and drinks it. Maddeningly, he winks.
Keith slaps the empty cup out of Lance's hand. Flecks of liquid paint the kitchen floor.
Against his palm, his phone buzzes again. Another photo of Keith's agonizing demise, undoubtedly. He doesn't look at it and instead skips straight to turning and glaring at Pidge, who falls into a fit of laughter the second Keith makes eye contact.
