“Magistrate Says War Plant Guards Will Be Protected,” Windsor Star. May 12, 1942. Page 11. ----- 2 Guilty Ot Obstruction --- Cadi Praises Watchman in Sentencing Pair ---- From Sarnia Bureau of The Windsor Star SARNIA, May 12. - Wartime guards stationed at industrial plants and other important installations will be protected to the limit of the law in carrying out their duties, Magistrate Charles Weir said in court yesterday in sentencing two Sarnia men for obstructing a special constable.
TAKE JAIL TERM Leonard Cummings, 387 Vidal street, south, and Garfield Thompson, 293 Shamrock street, were fined $25 and costs of $19.75 each, with the alternative of one month in jail. Both chose the jail term.
They admitted charges of wilfully obstructing Thomas W. Meere, special constable at the Union Gas Company Limited regulating house on Vidal street, south, early last Saturday morning.
Meere was commended by both the bench and Crown Attorney Harry M. Taylor for the way he handled the situation.
ORDERED MEN OFF The special constable said he saw two men, one staggering, walking across the gas company property, and thinking there might be a tussle, he dropped his double-barrelled shotgun to avoid accidental discharge of the weapon and ordered the men off the property. Neither complied, witness said. One of the men wanted to use the company telephone, and as this was contrary to orders. Meere wouldn't allow it.
The constable said one of the men swore at him, and then he grabbed their arms in an unsuccessful effort to get them off the property. At that moment he saw City Traffic Officer Ernest Duffield approaching on his motorbike, and he called to him. REFUSED TO LEAVE Constable Duffield testified he told Cummings and Thompson to leave. When they remained there he called the police station for a car, and placed the two men under arrest.
Neither Cummings nor Thompson testified in his own behalf.
“I feel Meere should be congratulated,” Crown Attorney Taylor said. “If he hadn't dropped his shot gun there might easily have been trouble. These guards are very necessary and must be protected.”
Magistrate Weir said he agreed with the Crown attorney. If any other offenders come before him on similar charges, there will be no leniency shown, the bench warned.
All in the line of duty
Jack would never get her in that uniform. Unless he cuffed her, of course.

“Constable Called ‘Public Nuisance’ Collects Damages,” Toronto Star. December 5, 1929. Page 1. --- Special to The Star Montreal, Dec. 4. - An epithet of ‘public nuisance,’ applied to Antoine Martin, special constable. In a motion proposed by Alderman Raoul Parsons and seconded by Ald. Alexandre Barclay in the Point Fortunate municipal council, reflected very serious blame on the constable and in no manner was justified under the circumstances, it was decided by Mr. Justice Martineau in the superior court to-day. Judgement was rendered for $50 in favor of Martin as exemplary damages.
Martin, a special constable with the National Hydro Co. and traffic officer, sued for $199 claiming he had been injured by the motion of the council asking his removal.
