"Special Topic" Louis Tomlinson. Feb 2020 1NROCK Magazine.
There are plenty of people out there who will give you a "how-to" guide to stay organized, and while they have plenty of helpful tips ...
Figured I might leave this here as well...
Life gets tough sometimes, and sometimes its difficult to stay on top of everything, whether that reason be mental or physical health, the workload that has crowded your schedule to the point where you actually have to time-slot sleep, or something entirely different. Regardless of the situation, there are a couple of easy ways to keep yourself organized.
- Bullet Journals and Day-Timers: they don’t have to be pretty, they just have to tell you what you have going on, when, and when you have to do something that isn’t work/school/sleep. As long as they fulfill that function, you’re doing pretty okay. Now all you have to do is write down what actually needs to go inside of it. It sounds very fifth grade, I know, but it works (trust me).
- Make a Chart: There’s one that divides things up by order of importance so that you can decide either how long it needs to take (or how much energy you’re going to have to spend) that I’ve found really helpful, especially when I have to balance university coursework with a job and having a life, and keeping my health in check. It looks sort of like this:
Yesterday | Tomorrow | Later
5 Minutes or less
Under an Hour
An Hour or More
A Day
Days - Week(s)
You can fill it out however you need in order to get everything done, and I’ve discovered that it’s less anxiety-inducing when you look at this rather than a massive list, simply because it’s broken down.
- Remember That Done Does Not Always Mean Done: just because there is a task on your to-do list does not mean that it needs to be actually complete in order to be checked off. Breaking things down into component parts is far more helpful than just saying “do laundry” or “get groceries.” Sometimes getting groceries means that you pick up three things and can put off other stuff until later in the week, or you “clean your room” by changing the sheets on your bed or tidy a surface. Doing things in stages allows you to still feel the sense of accomplishment from finishing a task, while also taking into account how much energy/time you may have.
Obviously this list is in no way complete, and I’m sure there are other ways to get or stay organized, but these are a couple of things I’ve noticed have helped me stay on top of things.

Bruiser The Bear: Our Savior
Belmont University prides itself in the safety of its students. However, the campus wasn’t always safe and secure. Once upon a time, there was a bearnado of massive proportions - similar to the sharknados that have hit the west coast in recent years. Bears were rampant, and students were having to lock themselves in their dorms and classrooms to prevent themselves from being eaten by these ferocious furry beasts. Without a clear solution in mind, the students and faculty alike began desperately praying to the gods for the bears to disappear. They received their answer. Bruiser, destroyer of bears, fell from the sky and landed in the quad. Armed with only boxing gloves and some insanely ripped muscles like those from a Roman statue, he starting slaughtering the bears one by one. Adelicia Acklen, the stunningly gorgeous maiden and owner of the Belmont Mansion, was seen sprinting through the hallways of Massey (because they totally existed within the same time period), being chased by the final 3 remaining bears. Bruiser, covered in fur and the remnants of his past killings, grabbed Adelicia with one arm and smacked the three bears with one incredibly massive punch of his hulked-out right arm, punching them through the wall and ending the horrible bearnado of Belmont. The punch was so powerful that he fell down with Adelicia on top of him and their eyes met with an electric intensity. Adelicia knew she wanted Bruiser to be her guardian forever, so she prayed to the gods that he stay her protector forever. As Bruiser rose to stand, his body morphed into a bear and froze into bronze. As long as he remained on campus, Bruiser would forever prevent the land of Belmont and our lady Adelicia from ever being victims of another bearnado. This has been the story of Bruiser the Bear: Our Savior.
I present to you, a brief lesson on Alexander the Great, solely through the lyrics of an Iron Maiden song:
"My son ask for thyself another Kingdom, for that which I leave is too small for thee" (King Philip of Macedonia - 339 B.C.)
Near to the east In a part of ancient Greece In an ancient land called Macedonia Was born a son To Philip of Macedon The legend his name was Alexander
At the age of nineteen He became the Macedon King And he swore to free all of Asia Minor By the Aegian Sea In 334 B.C. He utterly beat the armies of Persia
[Chorus:] Alexander the Great His name struck fear into hearts of men Alexander the Great Became a legend 'mongst mortal men
King Darius the third Defeated fled Persia The Scythians fell by the river Jaxartes Then Egypt fell to the Macedon King as well And he founded the city called Alexandria
By the Tigris river He met King Darius again And crushed him again in the battle of Arbela Entering Babylon And Susa, treasures he found Took Persepolis the capital of Persia
[Chorus:] Alexander the Great His name struck fear into hearts of men Alexander the Great Became a God amongst mortal men
A Phrygian King had bound a chariot yoke And Alexander cut the 'Gordian knot' And legend said that who untied the knot He would become the master of Asia
Hellenism he spread far and wide The Macedonian learned mind Their culture was a western way of life He paved the way for Christianity
Marching on, marching on The battle weary marching side by side Alexander's army line by line They wouldn't follow him to India Tired of the combat, pain and the glory
Alexander the Great His name struck fear into hearts of men Alexander the Great He died of fever in Babylon
Recap:
Who knew that Iron Maiden, a heavy metal band from the 70s and 80s, ended up writing a song about a historical political figure - one that is very accurate, I might add. Looks like a great way to study for finals if you ask me!
It took me way too long, but I present to you a timeline of the Peloponnesian War!

Heraclitus (535-475 BCE): A Pre-Socratic Philosopher
Heraclitus is such a strange fellow. He was born and raised in Ephesus, and, ironically, is known for how little we know him. Not much of his records are left, but what we do have speaks volumes. For example, we studied in class his famous saying about how you cannot step in the same river twice. I still find this thought-provoking in the fact that the river is always changing, but it also implies that we might be constantly changing as well. He thinks that many people in his lifetime are not questioning their surroundings enough, and are simply going through life seemingly brainwashed and only focused on the small world present in their everyday lives. He also believes that no certain entity created the Earth - that it has always existed (however this doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe in there being a sort of heaven(s)). Although, for someone of deep intellectual wit, you would think he would have known that covering himself in cow dung and lying in the sun for an entire day wouldn’t cure himself of dropsy. He died the next day :(

Ancient Medicine with the Greeks and Romans
Greeks:
Although they seemed to respect the Egyptian methods of treatment before them, what I’ve come to learn about the Greeks is that they relied very heavily on prayer as a source of treatment. In fact, they built many temples for the God of Medicine, Asclepius, where they would give sacrifices and pray to the god. The largest contribution, however, from the Greeks to medicine is the “father of medicine” himself, Hippocrates. His significance lies in his rational approach to the subject of medicine - that is, not relying on the Gods to fix ailments of every sort. Instead, he helped establish that doctors should factor in patients’ past medical history and symptoms before reaching a diagnosis and plan of treatment. Although some of his practices were unethical or simply downright wrong, his book Hippocratic Corpus became a reference guide for many future practitioners in medicine. The Greeks treated patients with herbal remedies and even surgery, which included instruments like scalpels, forceps, and catheters. They developed four “humors” in which they categorized illness: Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic, and Phlegmatic. These humors were defined by the types of fluids released by the body, like bile, blood, and phlegm. The Romans later adopted these humors after some initial resistance.
Romans:
The Romans didn’t change ideas rather than improved upon ideas already in use. In fact, their main focus and contributions were for the prevention of sickness. Their use of aqueducts and sewage systems were big improvements in terms of hygiene – something that was quite an issue in ancient times. Realizing the importance of a healthy army, they created hospitals for their military. They advanced surgical procedures, creating the first instruments unique to women and even performing cataract surgeries. The Roman physician Galen is the king of these cataract surgeries, but is known primarily for the extensive medical research done in his life.
