Special Assistance
Apologies for the break from blogging. I've been mad busy at work and snuck in a cheeky week to Spain. I've been feeling pretty up and down in general. It's hard getting used to the reality that I'm not going to get much better, no matter what I do now. I'm a little worried about the next couple of weeks as I'm going to be pushing my body at work to see how certain tasks affect it. I'm a little worried that my normal mask at work will start to break. Let's talk about a better experience though, shall we. Last week I went to Spain with 10 friends from work to go a see an amazing person we all love. The week was amazing. I booked special assistance for the airport in case my body let me down. At Gatwick on the way there I felt ok so I didn't ask for the help. We got through security very quickly so I could sit down soon after. I then asked for the assistance when we found out the gate was a 10 minute walk away so said bye to my friends for a bit and waited. It's interesting the looks you get as a fairly young and healthy looking person being pushed in a wheelchair to one of the assistance buggies. The guy helping me even asked "so what's wrong with you then" in that tone everyone with fibro knows. It was receiving that I didn't have to queue to board the plane and was in my seat quickly. During the week we had many late nights drinking on the porch or by the pool. One however got very late....to the point where we realised we were 2/3 hours away from sunrise. We had talked about wanting to see a sunrise on the beach so decided to stay up for it. Great idea to everyone apart from someone with fibro. I didn't want it to stop me though so pushed myself through, we woke everyone up and drove down to the beach. This was the only day where my body really let me down and I started to not be able to walk. The highlight of my holiday was this moment. The way my friends reacted to me being in pain, when they've never really seen it, was heart warming. I stayed quiet for most the morning as I was trying not to cry from all the pain I was in, but it was worth it for the beautiful sunrise and the help from my friends. Coming home was tough, I was in a lot of pain and spent most of the flight crying and in a bad mood. When I got to Gatwick there were 3 other passengers also waiting for assistance. As I got in the wheelchair one of the flight attendants came rushing out to say it was for someone else who had booked assistance whilst looking at me like I was stealing from a baby. The guy helping me had to explain that he had 4 people to help and that I was one of them. In the assistance buggy one of the other ladies gave me the typical "what wrong with you? You don't look sick?" I was far too tired to even explain so just responded that I had trouble walking. The passenger assistance at both airports I went through were brilliant. It's a shame that other people don't realise what they say and how they subconsciously act can be really disheartening.
